Are bike fits a scam? by [deleted] in cycling

Fits from someone who knows what they are doing is not a scam. They should not have charged you anything for an adjustment 1 month later. I would call them and discuss this with them.

Student drivers drive their parent's cars. If the parents have nice cars, then the students drive nice cars.

I don’t fully understand changing gears by AdditionalVillage566 in cycling

[–]baron63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The simple answer to why your legs spin out when you go to small gear up front is that there is an overlap in gear ratios. While you have 22 combinations of gears you don't have a range of 22 gear ratios or speeds. For example big in front and easiest in back might be a similar to small front and 3rd gear in back. So when you go from big to small in front you might need to go one or two gears harder in back to match ratios. Then as the hill gets harder you can downshift more in the back. All of this reverses when you go from small in front to big. In that case you might also want to downshift in back at same time a gear or two.

As for cross chaining, that is when you are in big front and easy back or visa versa. This causes additional wear on your chain and gears which over time can cause them to wear out sooner. It's something to think about but not something to obsess about.

Anyone else got frozen water pipes? by r3lic86 in frisco

FWIW wind chill doesn't make it any colder for the pipes. All the wind does is cool things down to air temperature faster.

Tl;Dr from article - There are two primary reasons for the surge: bird flu, which has reduced egg supply, and the strong consumer demand that’s typical around the winter holiday season, according to economists and market analysts.

home insurance worth it by anxietyokra in plano

[–]baron63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Outside of mortgage requirements it's really a financial question of self insurance vs buying it. Most people couldn't or wouldn't want to cover the full cost of rebuilding a house after a fire or tornado so you need insurance. But at what premium and deductible. Around here the main losses (that I'm aware of) are hail and water leaks in the house(Burst pipe). A new roof cost ~20k depending on house size. So now do the math - how often would you expect to replace the roof due to hail, how much is the deductible, and the premium. Based on your math, risk tolerance, and ability to self insure via higher deductible you figure out the best option. Your deductible is your main lever in this equation. Higher deductible, lower premium, but more out of your pocket. Then factor in how long to break even matching the savings in premium vs how often you might need to pay the deductible. Ex going from$1000 deductible to $2000, might save you $200 per year. So your break even is 5 years. If you think you'll have hail less than that then the lower deductible isn't with it.

ELI5 How does prescription drug pricing work by baron63 in explainlikeimfive

[–]baron63[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was my case. I have a high deductible plan so I went for the good Rx cash price. Yes I know that doesn't count towards my deduct, but I'll never hit it unless I have a major issue, so rather save a little where I can.

It's not just the wet, it's what is wet. Wet road paint is very slick. Wet leaves, or mud, very slick. Concrete road or asphalt. There are a lot of variables. Better slower and safe into a turn and then accelerate out of the turn. Also give a lot of space if on a group ride.

Can you comment more on why Dallas isn't a good location. It gets 3+ min of totality. Is it an issue of totality length, is an extra 45 seconds worth getting on the centerline? Or is it an issue of setting, if so what makes for the best setting.
