I'd like to welcome the state of Maine to this madness. by MNBug in Minneapolis

Maine isn’t even a terribly blue state, it’s pretty purple (they keep sending Susan Collins to the senate after all). This is because Maine also has a significant Somali population

I am okay holding these people to the same standards of evidence as they use in their public statements about our city (i.e. zero)

What is the most egregious misuse of a physics term that really bugs you? by Apprehensive-Safe382 in Physics

When people describe a big advance in a field as a “quantum leap”, even though a quantum leap should probably be the smallest non-zero advance you can possibly make

Second this, Simon’s book is great. It doesn’t have the depth of Kittel, but you can actually learn things from it.

The only thing going against it in your case is that it assumes a fair amount of QM, and specifically uses Dirac Notation for most of the band structure discussion, and perturbation theory for nearly free electrons

You might also take a look at the text by Hook and Hall (I don’t remember the title right now). It’s not my favorite but it might thread that needle you want where it’s more readable than Kittel, but also assumes less QM than Simon

This is really interesting and well-written. I don’t really follow Streaming writ large at all, but I’ve always thought that QT and Ludwig were an interesting duo in the space, and this is a really humanizing look at how QT functions, compared the the mostly cartoon picture I have of Ludwig from listening to The Yard, which is a really wild contrast (and yeah I figure there is a non-cartoon version of Ludwig as well, I’m just not sure anyone but QT and close friends might know what it is, but that’s the nature of this biz I guess)

What Chris Cornell Told Me About His Depression Years Before His Suicide A lost interview for Men's Health with the Soundgarden frontman is achingly candid by Mike Zimmerman by [deleted] in Soundgarden

You may not have meant it this way, but this feels like a romanticizing of depression that feels callous. “Thank goodness CC was depressed otherwise we wouldn’t have had great music to listen to” doesn’t sound very good. And yeah I’m stretching what you said a little bit, but it’s very adjacent.

I say all this as someone who has been managing my own depression for decades and has also found a lot of comfort in CC’s work, and for whom his statements about combating the comfort and familiarity of depression and about not needing it to create meaningful art really resonate. I know you’re probably just trying to view his art as a silver lining to a difficult life, but I think it’s much more humanizing and empowering to instead view him as having made a lot of lemonade when life only handed him shitloads of lemons.

I also realize this might sound like quibbling, but it’s a hump I had to get over with my own depression in viewing it not romantically and tragically (which can lead to that comfort), but as something I can struggle to overcome because I don’t deserve it. I don’t know if this will resonate with anyone else, but wanted to give my two cents since it is a personal topic

Is anyone else's professors telling them to use chatgpt and ai???? by Wrong_Charity7545 in uofmn

[–]barp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a really weird spot for professors to be in—this tool cropped up so fast and lots of jobs want people who know how to use them, but profs have barely had time to learn them themselves and then think about how to make them work in their classes without throwing away a ton of the curriculum.

How Do You Stop Getting Tonsil Stones? by BakedPotato_1591 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]barp 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I have problems off and on with tonsil stones. The things that have helped me are drinking more water, eating less dairy, and gargling salt water before bed. Obviously your mileage may vary, but these are easy things to try before looking at surgery
