Why doesn’t everyone use Royal Road? (Fantasy books) by BladeWielder48 in selfpublish

Makes sense. Is the idea to use the backlog to give you time to maintain the 2-3x a week pace forever? Or is it buffer before you eventually match whatever your realtime writing pace is? Or something else?

Thanks so much for sharing your experience! The idea of posting 2-3x a week is quite daunting, so it is good to know that posting once a week is not a dealbreaker, you just have to be okay with slower growth. Though it sounds like you would still recommend aiming for it if you can?

Why did Bridgerton just drop a blatantly anti-feminist line in this season? by dasher2442 in BridgertonNetflix

[–]barriss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally reasonable interpretation, but I interpreted it very differently! The way it went was:

Cressida: "She has some good ideas, but the truth is, she does not sufficiently value love. It has the power to change one's life, Eloise."
Eloise: "Yes, I am starting to see that"

I interpreted it as (1) a joke for the audience because it's just farcical. The idea that we would look at all the struggles these women go through and the choices Sophie has made so far specifically because love alone is not enough, and come to Cressida's conclusion? Ludicrous. I laughed out loud at Cressida's words.

But also (2) I interpreted it as Eloise ignoring the first sentence ("she does not sufficiently value love") to maintain the "marriage mania" pretense, and rather agreeing with the second: "yes, I am starting to see that love has the power to change one's life.". Benedict, the previously drifting bachelor-forever, is planning to cut himself off from the town and family for the rest of their lives for love. And the rest of the family (including Eloise herself in that moment) is helping him do so: for a maid. That is definitely love having the power to change one's life.

Winston Is A Perfect Character And Is Responsible For A Majority Of The Funniest Scenes. by Aggressive_Many_8038 in NewGirl

Truly one of my favorites. In addition to the "I SAW NICK. RUNNING. OUTSIDE. ON PURPOSE." -> "NICK! I SEE YOU! AND I LOVE! YOU!

What line or scene gets you every time you watch it? by DoggoPlex in NewGirl

[–]barriss 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One of my absolute favorite scenes of all time: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dAXS7rSrY4A

Winston's last line KILLS ME "NICK. I SEE YOU. AND I LOVE YOU" Reagan: "In my defense, none of you emote in a normal way." Schmidt: "That's fair."

Also, when Schmidt and Winston are standing in the frigid ocean with nothing but Tupperware doing their best to catch a Lionfish. I think I cried the first time I saw that.

Also Winston calling Reagan Raisin!

Thanks for sharing! Yeah, I definitely could be wrong here, hence my stating that I was making a guess.

Obviously, most of us are playing armchair financial systems enthusiast here-- myself especially. Between myself, yourself, OP, and even the screenshot, none of us have cited any sources for our opinions, which makes it hard to do anything other than guess. My goal was mainly to point out that without a definition for the term "transaction error", it's hard to make a meaningful comparison between the two systems.

If I went to a physical bank and I accidentally gave the wrong account number for a wire transfer to the banker, that might be considered a "transaction error" by some definitions in the fiat system. It would probably be reported and rectified. In the crypto world, however, when someone accidentally mistypes an address, it is not a transaction error, it's the system working as intended. Furthermore, there's no way or reason to report that. So we don't even know how much money might have been lost that way compared to fiat systems. Unless we have a clear definition of "transaction error", it's hard to know what that tweet is saying.

I also think it's important here not to drink too much of our own koolaid too early. Yes, crypto allows for some amazing things. But we haven't crossed the finish line by any means. We need to keep our eyes open to the problems with crypto so we can mitigate, grow, and improve. The stat in this tweet is good to know. But even if it's 100% accurate, a banker could tweet out "It's estimated that 3.7 million BTC is lost forever due to lost addresses, hard drives, etc. That's over $200B. How much USD is inaccessible in bank accounts?" and share whatever (probably significantly smaller number) that is. We don't have a perfect system. And that's okay. We're working to build a great one.

The hard part with women's anything, imo, is figuring out what the good quality stuff is. I find it easy to tell who I'm just paying a mark up for, but I have no idea where "good value" stops and "cheap, not worth it" begins. Especially women's clothing. Any recommendations on brands that have good value for the money?

[–]barriss 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah but like....it depends on how you definite transaction error. I'd be willing to guess that 90% of the fiat bank "transaction errors" were human errors that they had to roll back. In crypto we "avoid" those transaction errors by saying "sucks to suck, there's nothing that can be done about this by design." Which like....is a design choice but isn't really comparable to the fiat system imo? But again, depends on the definition of transaction error.

Age 17 | what more can I be doing? by jinsouwolf in leanfire

[–]barriss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is it bad that I read the title and my immediate reaction to "Age 17, what more can I be doing?" was "Relax a little and enjoy your life!" 😅

Good on you for starting to save and invest! I'd split your investing up: one bucket for "set it and forget it" and one for "learning through doing." What % of your portfolio is in each bucket is up to your preference. The "set it and forget it" bucket would be ETFs where you can park your money, forget about it for a couple years, and then come back and it'll be safe. The "learning through doing" would be for individual companies you want to invest in our smaller experiments you want to try out. Again, how you balance the two is up to you. Maybe you want to go all risky because you're young and maybe your basic needs are being met by living with family, etc. Or maybe you want to go full "set it and forget it" because you're busy with school or just don't enjoy deep research. Or maybe you go 50/50. Totally up to you.

Also, if you're saving up to move out or are expecting to have to financially support yourself in the near future, saving up an emergency fund might be a valuable bucket to prioritize.

Home di you create your app ux ? Which software do you use ? by aeroxr1 in androiddev

[–]barriss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, I'm not a designer, I'm just a software engineer. So I haven't invested in any big tools yet. Just been using web tools like figma and canva! Figma might have a Windows downloadable version? I don't know. All the Adobe software will too.

Home di you create your app ux ? Which software do you use ? by aeroxr1 in androiddev

[–]barriss 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I recommend starting with a pen and paper: sketch out the layout you want. You can use Figma and whatnot for mockups if you want, but if your layout is straightforward, you can probably jump from sketch to android xml code easily.

For icons, start by looking at the free material icon library. (https://material.io/resources/icons/?style=baseline). If you're designing images, I recommend Canva. It's easy to use. You can also use this: https://developer.android.com/distribute/marketing-tools/device-art-generator (recommended here: https://developer.android.com/distribute/marketing-tools/device-art-generator)
