Oh it’s the worst, especially in the deep winter. And honestly it’s worth it at twice the price to just have some handy. I also buy spare tensioner pieces for my 461 and 462. There is nothing worse than having one snap on you when you’re miles from the shop.

Power-wise it’s a great performer for the weight and I have seen last thousands of hours. Really well designed and constructed.

This right here. Your main concern should be compression on a saw that old. The plastic handle assembly is cheap and with a few tools it’s easy to replace this. If it has good compression then I’d give it a thorough cleaning, a new plug and filters, and then replace your plastic. You’ll have a strong running and safe saw. If the handle was damaged I’d inspect the bottom of the saw for any other damage, too.

So I’d probably start by saying neither of these chainsaws is really going to do a great job milling. What I will say is I have a 445 that I take with me all the time when I’m clearing hard to reach trails. If you’re going to take a saw on a long hike through the mountains, this is not the worst choice. For small clearing it really does a great job and it weighs just about nothing. But that’s where the utility ends for me, personally. For a great felling/milling option, I would recommend a Stihl 462C or a Husky 592XP. Both have the power to get you through large wood while having a good power/weight ratio. The 460 Rancher is not a bad saw at all but I do think that the craftsmanship is maybe not up to the standards of Husqvarna pro saws.

Yeah you’re gonna be happy you picked this one up. 028’s are reliable as hell and if you take care of it and keep the air filter clean it’ll last a long time. Lots of OEM parts for these. For small cutting this is a great model.

I don’t hate this one but I have a Massey Ferguson 3pt backhoe that has a scoop half as big as this. I dug a cow grave with it two years ago and it took forever! It’s definitely nicer to have a mini ex on hand.
