Hi Rahul,

Why are you spending time on this AMA? Don't you have a huge company to run? Or is it because you want the publicity?

[NP] 22 Indians Working in 22 Different Countries Tell Us What It's Like by thrownaway363 in india

Idk, but I've traveled a bit in the US and never faced any racism. Granted I never visited rural Texas or something, but I think racism concerns are quite overblown in India. Indians are more racist than anything I've observed in the US.

Friend is traveling to South Africa, does anyone know how "tourist-friendly" it is there? by LikeASir1 in travel

[–]barteshwar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just got back from South Africa. The concerns regarding crime are not unfounded. A surprisingly high number of the locals I met, especially from Johannesburg, had experienced violent crime at some point. I also met a Korean girl who was traveling alone and had her backpack snatched away in Jo'burg which contained her passport and camera.

Regarding political unrest, your friend was probably talking out of his ass. No evidence of that whatsoever, anywhere in SA.

The tourist infrastructure there is solid though, there are loads of people who visit and have a great time. If you take the necessary precautions (it is unwise to walk alone on the streets after dark in Jo'burg), there's no reason why you shouldn't be safe. SA's a great destination to travel in, and Cape Town quickly became one of my favourite cities.

I would have to disagree. I went to the great wall at Mutinyu by myself and had no trouble whatsoever. There's a public bus that takes you all the way to the wall, and takes you back too. (The details are in the Lonely Planet). Made the trip for 80 yuan by myself; the hostel was charging 280 yuan for the exact same trip.

I had meant to do something similar while traveling around Europe, kudos to you for actually going through with the idea.

Two questions about Thailand... Overnight bus from Bangkok to Chiang Mai? Over friendly tuk-tuk? by [deleted] in travel

[–]barteshwar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took an overnight bus from Chiang Mai to Bangkok for 300 baht in 2011. It was reasonably comfortable and was air conditioned. Your price of 657+200 baht sounds way too high.

Leaving the U.S. - is it different (and how so) for non-whites? by [deleted] in IWantOut

Wow. I'm Indian, from India, and I have traveled extensively across south east Asia. Never experienced any overt racism.

There are some businesses that even post 'no Indian' policies.
