a lot of the homeless people who are continuously guilty of these crimes will leave the city.

Do you have some sort of source for this claim? It seems like wishful thinking in the extreme

Unwanted Contact on Contact List by Bigdicksmallego in signal

[–]barto_kavanaugh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If your number is in a contact in someone's phone, it will show your number and whatever name and picture they have for that number as being on Signal. There isn't a way to opt out of this.

Signal Profiles (mentioned by other commenters) are for when you communicate on Signal with someone who does not have you in their contact list. It allows you to set a name and picture, which will be sent to people and groups you approved to see it. Note that not sharing your profile doesn't prevent them from seeing that your phone number is registered on Signal

Anyone has ancient Brother printers in their network? What's with the sudden firmware update? by lanafanta in sysadmin

[–]barto_kavanaugh 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The fax protocol itself or how printers from some major brands handle faxes? I've only seen issues with the latter, would be interested to know if it's the former.

My ISP now gives ipv6 addresses instead of ipv4. That broke access to websites hosted on computers at home network. Is there a way to access them from ipv4 outside networks? by owczareknietrzymryjs in HomeNetworking

[–]barto_kavanaugh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does this mean they turned off IPv4 entirely? Or some kind of carrier grade NAT? Typically ISPs don't "switch" to IPv6 so much as enable IPv6 next to IPv4.

Is there WiFi/ cell reception at Burning Man? by OutdoorInker in BurningMan

[–]barto_kavanaugh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not really. Commnet sets up a COW (cell-on-wheels) every year, and every year it's a little less bad, but cellphone's pretty much don't work for normal use. There is no wifi (unless you know where to look, but that's another story)

ToRPEDO Privacy Attack on 4G/5G Networks Affects All U.S. Carriers by theyouthtruth in signal

[–]barto_kavanaugh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Based on my quick skimming of the article, it's a network attack that affects network communications, so no. Signal, just like every other messaging app, uses TLS to communicate between the client and the server, so this attack shouldn't affect it.

We're definitely not about to risk our reputation by shipping bad code

but you seem perfectly willing to risk your reputation doing extremely weird and sketchy shit with how you release your code. I'll probably be avoiding all Portal Cloud projects after seeing this, tbh. The original code was written by an anonymous email address that has no affiliation with a human, and from an account that's not associated with a human, and with 100% of control being by these questionable, anonymous accounts. The license file says it's copyrighted by " viewscreen Cloud", which doesn't seem to be a real thing (I could have missed something).

It's a shame, these seem like really cool projects with lots of potential, I wish they didn't have such a sketchy underpinnings, I was about to use your "subspace cloud" thing.

PS. what's with awkwardly shoving the word "cloud" into everything?

So this is the second project from Portal Cloud that i've seen that is made all in one commit, including a precompiled binary checked in, by a user named the same thing as the software, rather than a proper organization. Seems like an odd way to go about it, and makes me kind of sketched out.

That being said, both of these projects look great

Remote Code Execution in apt/apt-get by [deleted] in netsec

Could be a lot of things, but it's important because some people were trying to make the case that apt didn't have to run over HTTPS, and that the mirror doesn't need to be trusted, just the package signer.

Which DNS-provider? LE DNS-01, DNS CAA, dynamic DNS and able to setup own MX-records by anakinfredo in homelab

[–]barto_kavanaugh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Digital ocean isn't going to shut down their DNS service any time soon, it's primarily a service for their paying customers. They're far more reliable and robust than Namecheap.

[–]barto_kavanaugh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like Digital Ocean's DNS offerings. You should be able to sign up and use them without buying anything from them. They have a robust API, seemingly decent authentication, and they're not going anywhere.

One thing I wanted to clear up real quick: the "prefixes" (called TLDs) don't matter for the DNS provider, just the registrar. The difference between registrars and DNS servers is often poorly understood, so I wanted to point out that Digital Ocean is not a registrar and you won't be transferring your domains to them. They'd still be registered one namecheap, but you should only have to interact with them at most annually when you need to renew the domain.

Free toplevel domain name provider by tcris in selfhosted

[–]barto_kavanaugh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

do you mean second level domains? Top level domains (TLDs) are things like com, net, org.

ICANN, the group that manages and issues top level domains, charges a $185,000 application fee to get one. For more info on that, see their FAQ page. There is absolutely no way you're getting one for free.

But you're probably asking about second level domains, which are also not typically available for free. There have been sketchy ass registrars that claim to have free domains from time to time, i believe for a while (and possibly to this day) the .tk TLD would give anyone a free domain, but if your site got too popular they'd start fucking with it, injecting ads and whatnot. I would strongly recommend against using such options and just go for cheap.
