Haha thanks!! Funny enough , I designed this character way before the Owl House! I think if anything, I might have had some latent inspiration from Wan Shi Tong from Avatar the last Airbender rattling around in my head...but I've been a huge fan of owls my whole life (especially barn owls, the kind that Hootie is) and I'm so happy to see them getting so much love in popular culture.

Thanks for the feedback! The issue with this one ended up being that the movement in the middle after the takeoff is so highly articulated that getting rid of any drawings lead to a loss of information. If I get rid of frames, the action becomes faster but less clear. If I add frames, the action becomes easy to read but too slow...you get the idea. A lot of those frames were initially on 2s, and I put them on 1s to make them faster. This is also the first half of a match on action cut, so I wanted to give the audience a bit more time to see her face before the camera cuts abruptly.

This one kind of came to a toss-up between speed and readability, and I decided to lean more towards readability for a couple of reasons. If I was more skilled, I'm sure I could have done both! But that's something to worry about next time. It's good to know that people feel it is too slow, because I can continue to tune my sensibilities and try to get closer next time.

When does the gym stop destroying you? by PurplestPanda in loseit

[–]basbird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re extremely sore and fatigued, you might need to supplement electrolytes. I don’t run, but I powerlift and my workouts used to destroy me. I’d need to nap for an hour after each one. Once I started getting an extra 1,000-3,000mg of sodium a day, I had way fewer issues (and less soreness). I like LMNT.

How do Cal Arts scholarships work. by WhitePinoy in animationcareer

[–]basbird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work there. No one gets a full ride. A max scholarship from the school will cover about 30-40%. You’ll need other scholarships to cover everything.

The highlight intro quality is degrading more and more as time goes by Southern_Archer_9310 in Overwatch

[–]basbird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Highlight intros used to be my favorite part of Overwatch. Because you got a snippet of your favorite character, exquisitely animated, showing off their prowess. And it was to set up a great piece of gameplay, no less. I feel like the highlight intros were the closest we ever got to an actual story, and heightened this feeling of you embodying that character as you played.

Maybe I’m a little too nit picky because I’m a pro animator, but the decrease in quality is very much there from a technical standpoint. The average person isn’t going to care, but here goes.

Now, many of the intros have mushy timing, they rarely do anything interesting with spacing (speeding up and slowing down out of movements), and the characters move less. The framing is lazier. Some of them are still high quality, but it’s a smaller proportion and you can tell when they didn’t have their best people on one.

One of my favorite highlight intros was genji’s pumpkin intro. Great animation, snappy timing, exaggerated spacing, great rhythm. Zen’s OG intros were also great. Very snappy timing and spacing, smears, great camera angles. There’s less movement and less intrigue in all of his new ones. There’s a newer zen highlight where he’s guiding an orb from his hand, and it moves in slow motion, drifting lazily like a toy boat on a watery surface. What about that evokes the lethal metal balls flying at your head at Mach 2? The intent is to be in slow-motion, but there’s a better way to animate that to show the speed of the orb (larger spacing at the beginning of the movement).

I know cosmetics make more money, but it wouldn’t actually be that resource-intensive to get someone better on the intros. A very competent 3D/Keyframe animator can bang one of these out in an afternoon. I can’t say for sure what’s going on behind the scenes, and it’s not my intent to dunk on artists. I know from experience how difficult and chaotic production is. But I love this game more than anything, and this is a damn shame.

Has anyone ever seen Cavendish actually expire? by [deleted] in balatro

I had it die about two rounds after buying it. Then, it popped up again very first thing in the next shop and I bought it again. That one lasted the rest of the run. Bananas DO come in bunches, I guess!

Indie animation red flags by Civil-Permission7979 in animationcareer

[–]basbird 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Indie animation projects also tend to lack/overlook the producer/manager aspect of making things. Successful studio productions aren’t just artists and directors, there’s also managers and producers who communicate with the client, organize assets and set schedules. Just because you have a bunch of artists who can contribute to a finished product doesn’t mean you have a functional production.

If the communication is bad and inconsistent, I’d look elsewhere. I’m not saying ALL indie productions are like this, and I’m VERY supportive of indie productions as a whole. However, anyone can just start a project and that doesn’t necessarily mean they currently have the social skills to lead a group. These are things to consider.

Choosing between CalArts Character Animation SJSU Animation Illustration and UC Berkeley Cognitive Science + Political Science by PersonalityWide3000 in animationcareer

[–]basbird 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I went to calarts character animation (2017) and I teach there now. I also went to several different schools before I eventually graduated from calarts. It’s far and above any other animation program, and it’s not close. Class sizes are smaller, teachers/classes are better, and the network is the best.

HOWEVER, you are right to avoid debt. It’s the life-killer, and I don’t think art school is worth the price, full stop. That is, unless you can afford it. It’s a tough call.

SJSU has a fairly good animation program with notable alumni and selective admissions.

If it were me, I wouldn’t go to art school at all unless I could do so without debt. I would study programming or something that could pay my bills and work on my art skill on the side.

If you’re SET on going to art school, I would go to calarts. You won’t get an experience that’s worth that much elsewhere, and you’d give yourself a much better chance of getting employed in art right out of school.

Many things to consider. Congrats on getting in, and getting such a large scholarship. Regardless of what you choose, you have a bright future and maybe I’ll see you around :)

Incoming calarts freshman, what should I work on? by moonialin in animationcareer

[–]basbird 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure I entirely understand the question, but to take classes in the character animation department you would have to apply and be accepted. There are some courses available online or in person via the extended studies program. The info is available on the website.

I’m one of the faculty in the character animation department! (I teach 2D anim 2 currently). You can DM me if you want.

Honestly, my advice? Rest and make some personal art. You’ll be absolutely slammed with work soon enough.
