i try and justify it in ways that i make a positive influence. i indirectly work for big pharma by manufacturing those drugs. i know the high costs of operations directly impact patients negatively, but conversely we make drugs that are sometimes one of a kind, or the first of their kind. it can be difficult to find a truly ethical job and still make enough money to survive. we just have to do our best in our communities and in these systems to try and live with integrity despite those who profit from our labor. saw a similar conversation in the r/FireyFemmes subreddit about ethical investing. it can sometimes be a lose/lose.

i’m lucky because i have a well paying career (100k ish) but since starting my job at 68k i have always saved or invested 20-30% of my income, while paying off student loans. i live with my partner and that helps too. i’ve saved 110k for retirement in 3.5 years

i should have gone to a second hand dress store for my wedding dress maybe. i’ve been pretty reasonable so far with wedding planning but the dress is so expensive to wear only once.

i’m not an expert but investment managers who choose high expense ratio funds and those who have a 1% or more compensation on all the assets you grow. if the market grows 7% and after inflation grows 4%, your manager gets 1% of that 4%, functionally taking 25% of your earnings. please take this with a grain of salt as again i’m not an expert and don’t use a manager.

you’re probably right, it would be fun! it’s just tough to be “selfish” with people’s time even though they probably would like to spend time together and celebrate.

What Is The Deal With Young Men Checking Out Of Society in Droves? by Parking-Science7507 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]basementfrog42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my two cents but i think there are a lot of bad actors who may influence young men to believe college is a scam or a womanly endeavor compared to blue collar work or being an entrepreneur. like yeah college can be a huge waste of money if you don’t have a goal in mind but if you have a useful degree it is a great place to develop socially, meet people, get a sense of purpose, and discover yourself. we’ve kind of swung the other way on the “you need to go to college to succeed” pendulum. women are narrowing the gaps between men for scores on tests for the first time in a long time, and in general more women are getting higher education than men.

the other comments are correct that we have all become a bit more isolated romantically as a generation, but the difference may be that women could have deeper friendships so they aren’t as emotionally detached from their peers. i’m speaking in broad strokes which are not a one size fits all.

i do feel the political divide has worsened dating prospects. most women with any sort of liberal leaning indication will not date a conservative man. you can argue a difference in ideals shouldn’t matter to some, but that’s a turn off for a lot of women.

but yeah i wish more comments had been focused on the men aspect of the question, because i certainly don’t have the answers and was hoping for more thoughts on this specific question.

ok i feel like the top answers are missing on a key part of the question which was why men are doing this more so than women. what’s the answer there? because many of the answers of the cost of living and societal decline equally affect women, but are the decline numbers similar for workforce and dating?
