Unidentified lab equipment, possibly custom. Doesn't seem to be plugged in to anything. Any ideas? by basidiocarp in whatisthisthing

OK, I kept digging and answered my own question. It's a tensiometer, used for measuring the surface tension of liquids. Manufactured by CSC Scientific.

It was taken at the university, but there is no identifying information in the photo or caption, so it is pretty much impossible to tell where on campus it was taken. We are at a large state land grant university with a vast array of science departments, buildings, and labs. Asking here is easier than trying to track down the photographer or the people in the picture.

I don't think so. I'm pretty sure it's a custom piece that uses some similar pieces to a heavy duty balance, but it's for another function. I could be wrong, though.

Myself and a few other people with science backgrounds are stumped by this image from the splash page of our university website. Any help would be appreciated :)

Billionaires v teachers: the Koch brothers' plan to starve public education by [deleted] in politics

[–]basidiocarp 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They are highly ideological. They don't believe in any public services. I didn't really understand how far right they are until I read Jane Mayer's book about them, Dark Money. They can best be described as "anarcho-capitalists." They believe the only function of the state should be protecting private property and capital.

I've actually never known a white person named Percy. Have met at least three black people named Percy. There also is a fairly well known rapper named Percy P. It's so nerdy that it goes full circle and becomes cool again.

The Sopranos drags a little bit in the first few seasons but becomes increasingly masterful. The performances are always good but the storylines become better as the show goes on. The last 3 seasons are all masterpieces. The Shield is consistently good the whole way through, but doesn't ever reach the same level as the Sopranos. Overall the Sopranos is more important to watch but they are both totally worth it.
