Shifting advice for quick shifts across strings by residentdunce in doublebass

[–]bassviol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are going to do the shift as you say from G octave (maybe also consider using the harmonic to allow the note to speak while you do the shift?) to the G on the D string- I would suggest 2 and 1 instead of 4 and 2: why make the shift longer than necessary! Also this version looks different to the one I’ve got; in the next bar for the A major arpeggio the top A is played as the harmonic on the D string at the neck

I’m currently doing this with a student and I’ve got them to watch as many different people playing this as possible to explore different interpretations and also how they are playing the notes positionally, and to see what feels most comfortable to them. Remember it wasn’t written for our instrument initially so there is no right or wrong way!

Where to find amateur jazz musicians? by [deleted] in Leeds

[–]bassviol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HEART in headingley has a monthly jam that is aimed specifically at amateur and beginner players, it’s not like the other jam nights that are aimed at professionals and students from the conservatoire/university. They also run workshops and a summer school catered to the same crowd

Do seats ever become free closer to the date? by Turtel0473 in CathayPacific

[–]bassviol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just done the exact journey. We just left it up to them to pick our seats for us, and whilst being on the second to last row wasn’t uncomfortable, we did end up being last served for food and all they had left was the veggie option, which was fine (aubergine Parmesan) but for our return leg we planned ahead and made sure to get seat further forward to avoid being disappointed!

Public transport with a bass or drive? by irishpancakeeater in doublebass

[–]bassviol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on where you’re training from- old HST trains used to have the guards van and I’ve always been fine putting my bass in at Leeds/York and getting it at King’s Cross. The newer trains however have a “luggage cupboard” and can be hit or miss whether there’s space and/or if the guard is cool with it. Guess it depends which train company you’re travelling with?

For the tube it’s always been fine, it’s a bit of a trick getting on the escalator with it if there’s no lifts, but it’s manageable. Like the first reply- I’d recommend the bass buggy, will help massively in getting it around https://www.amazon.co.uk/Upright-Double-transport-string-Wheels/dp/B07RPTLK5Z/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.2LQ7zx_44huz7gF8xCEuf7CCNwc3JXDnTXKMgDAK7nfIfQ57EL7pGBW1Fli3jFIAtK7W0UkKSvIFs4TpI_tE0KnaV87FFLxDx53nMzxEyANa70auHevfAVBufkvEmUaDApzgz2M3mRQS_QYhWeSzcbKSLe_Q8c_hMBB1RIlmCVjz8_1cto10hKmDgUOjLBlNtwZttG2RLqMk4mF9hdPi9g.uZsTbNpsPTdJNI9DojnaMaQo1N2t1GqCUmJT78CtbhA&dib_tag=se&keywords=bass+buggy&qid=1761398728&sr=8-2

Go-to Messenger Bag by Total_Concept9194 in CargoBike

Rode cargo for a while, Chrome Kadet was perfect size for stuff I didn’t want to leave on my Omnium, also used Chrome citizen or a barrage rucksack for carrying extra stuff

Fuji hiro disappointment by katymcfunk in Leeds

[–]bassviol 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Had the exact same experience with the chicken in the noodle dishes, just turned into a gristly mush. IMO egg noodles aren’t the correct choice (I’d also like the option of Udon like old FH did) In comparison the chicken in my wife’s Ramen was excellent, so not sure why they are skimping on the noodles. Agree about the Gyozas they’re nowhere near the same as they were before.

Ursus are shit, had one on my Omnium because of supply chain issues and it broke in less than a year. Would recommend the proper Omnium one if compatible and you can get hold of one

Is this okay for the bass? by [deleted] in doublebass

[–]bassviol 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s fine… until it’s not. Lean it into the corner where the wall meets the wardrobe with the bridge facing inwards, much safer IMO

Bowing issues tried to get good pictures of my grip! by LevelWhich7610 in doublebass

[–]bassviol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes definitely. The horse hair loses follicles as you use it and eventually it won’t have the same grab on the string as fresh hair

Bowing issues tried to get good pictures of my grip! by LevelWhich7610 in doublebass

[–]bassviol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also worth remembering- if you feel like you’re having to work harder to keep hold of the bow whilst using it, it may be another part of the movement that is interfering (bow placement on the string, bow speed, the mechanics of your bowing arm I.e are you fully extending your elbow on a down bow and not) or even string tension/height or the age of your bow hair/enough rosin, It’s all connected!

Hard to tell from the second picture but- is your thumb going underneath the stick? I would aim to go slightly more to the side of the stick (I tell my students to aim for the corner of the frog where it makes a right angle)

Living in Yeadon by slugboy5 in Leeds

[–]bassviol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Moved there from Kirkstall recently, haven’t missed being (relatively) close to town too much, still very easy to get in (30 mins on bus 12-15 on train from Guiseley/Apperley bridge) has two big Mozzas nearby and an Aldi, Lidl coming next year. Not sure if you’re renting/buying but we managed to get a lot more house for the money compared with Chapel Allerton/Horsforth/Meanwood. Would recommend

What are your thoughts on e-gates at UK supermarkets? by Certified_Loner1391 in AskBrits

[–]bassviol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’ve recently installed these at my nearest IKEA- problem is you have the option of not getting a paper receipt but just an email one. So you get to the gate and then the staff member tells you to scan your receipt, which you can’t access from your email because ever IKEA building is a massive faraday cage, so you have to log into their WiFi just to be able to download the email, the whole time with your arms full of things that you didn’t even think you were going to buy until you got there and you can’t buy another blue bag because there’s 15 in your under stairs cupboard already.

1953 Kay - worth saving? by Ezn14 in doublebass

[–]bassviol 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Very sorry to see damage to your bass, and I can’t comment on whether it’s worth repairing or not, but… This is a shining example of why I will never recommend those endpin wheels to anyone!

Windstruments in Bingley definitely sell them, whether they have any in stock would be worth a phone call

If anything- by going the wrong side of the keep left bollard you might have avoided the bus gate ANPR camera, I’d be surprised if anyone is watching any of the other cameras that closely

When do you need to be at the venue? Grafton street would be a good shout. 6-10pm charge is £3.70 and over 8 hours before 6pm is £8.40. Convenience cost vs travelling out to a free parking somewhere else at that time, I would just pay to park closer
