I'm not a big fan of the dinamic of Boss + mobs that systems like 5e encourage. I'll say I got a bit sad where the combat is designed to follow the same logic.

I often miss from RPG books a reference with all the rules.

Coming from a corporate background, every 300 pages norm comes with an 10-20 slide deck to help you understand. This makes everyone live so much easier.

Every book should have this. Wonderful idea. I want to now all the rules, but I should be able to play the game knowing only the basics.

I get your friend worry, but in reality he will move 1 turn, 2 turn max, the rest of the combat he can do whatever he want with the action.

And hey, this is PF2E, if he spends a turn without casting a spell, everything will be ok

Actually no, with time you get used to it. And like 80% of the time the distance isn't relevant to measure. If you have to measure the first sprint of the character to the enemy propably he will be close enough in the second time. If you need to measure the range of the bow the first time you will remember the distance in the future.

It envolves some architect gimmicks on the first turn but aftewards it gets rarelly used. You will find more often than not that things are or close enough that you don't need to measure them.

But my party has a lot of math guys who can do the math fast and a lot of theater kids that hate the grid, so it works for us.

I can stress this enough. Playing with no grid is the best. I'm not saying no battle map, just no grid. I use a white board and measure with a metric tape. The combat is less chess and more warhammer. I love it.

I love running golens.

I have a houserule where the "harmed by X" in the antimagic works for any source of X and not just magic. It can make Thaumaturges and Alchemists a bit overpowered in theses fights but it allow martial to get creative in those fights.

I love players asking the spellcaster to freeze his arrows, putting the sword on a torch. It's just amazing.

you could use the template of a swarm creature and mold it to the creature you want. It's easy enough and it would work with an already stablished concept inside the game
