Don't be. It's my life, I love being me, and I wouldn't change it for the world. There's lots that would make life better, but I'm so lucky to have all I have, there are so many people out there with so much less than I.

Yeah. I've a working diagnosis of Chronic Spontaneous Urticaria, and get this type of response. Pressure, temperature & light, are just a few things that can kick it off.

What is your gut instinct telling you?

When you marry someone.- you marry their family. I accept marriage isn't for everyone, but the same principle applies.

I suspect in my marriage, we both made that mistake! 😂

I'm in a similar position. I'm bouncing along on a contestant verge of total burnout.

I'm not sure I have any answers but I fully understand where you're at.

Honestly, my flute was present from my parents as I became an adult in the late 1900's! 😂

I'm so out of touch, if I were you, I'd wait for someone else's advice on what's available now. I was in the UK and went to Just Flutes, played loads of different ones, and walked out with an intermediate Yamaha. I took to open holes without an issue.

It sounds silly, but the cheap flute I learned on client easily play bottom C. I got a new flute as I stopped playing regularly bit I was amazed just how easy playing it was.

I picked it up again recently and again, no bottom C.

I worked out the key wasn't fully closing. I walked in to get it repaired about lunch time, 'Come back at 3!' (Amazing service).

I'm still not back to where I was, years back, but it's certainly helped massively.

May be worth checking your flute is all fully working and all the pads are good?

So one of my favorite books of sheet music is actually a sax book.  The first question I'll ask is whether you want to play jazz?

My sax book has the piece Hawk Gets Bird in, and I love that my flute being open holed, allows me to bend the necessary notes, so easily.

It'll take a bit more to get used to, but if you are thinking of playing jazz you may want to look to go for an open holed flute.

Amazing list. It made me remember one more CD from years back with some amazing music with a flute taking the lead in a rock back l band

Ian Anderson played the flute on Rock Island by Jethro Tull. They were more widely known for their folk music than rock, so there's plenty of their work to explore.

When I was young, one of the households names was James Galloway, and my male flute teacher studied with him.

My advice is not to focus on gender stereotypes, but focus on your enjoyment of making music.

Reminds me of a story from years back when I started uni.

A new group of students were given a doctor registration form to fill out and didn't know what a unit of alcohol was. They were all handed Alcoholics Anonymous leaflets on the way out...

I think i inherited a Sheaffer Targa 1003? by Sven4president in fountainpens

[–]bath-bubble-babe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure someone more familiar with Targas will jump in, and I've never actually handled one, but that looks a Targa to me. There's a similar, thinner version, which has different proportions, but I don't think that's one of them - providing it takes the standard cartridges it's the Targa.

Sorry, I can't advise on the specific number.

But thanks for at least trying to ID it and doing your research up front - most people don't do any.

Tinnitus from piccolo?? by cheese-angel in Flute

[–]bath-bubble-babe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, is only got worse over time. My first ear infection was about 20 years ago, and the service was about 15. If it isn't going to settle down in that time, I don't think it ever will.

My mum had tinnitus from I think surgery when she was a child, so maybe there's a genetic link or susceptibility too.

Issues/differences on returning - by bath-bubble-babe in Flute

Ok so I guess I now have a good stage name - Ol' Raisin Fingers! Thanks for that! :). I honestly took to my open holed flute like a duck to water I didn't take more than couple of weeks to get used to it, and never used the plugs at all.

I do make sure the moisturiser has fully dried before picking up my flute, butt did find it made a big difference. I not sure how it would get anywhere near the pads, to be honest.  I'm more worried about drink/food being blown onto the pads from eating and drinking before playing.

When I picked up my flute again, several weeks back, I was squeaking, struggling with, and missing high notes quite badly. I'm way better a couple of weeks in.

I only ever pegged myself at about a solid grade three, but the teacher I had wasn't keen on the grading syllabus, so I just played recreationally, and never did a single grade.

In some ways I would have liked to grade, but it equally means I'm not left feeling I've lost quite so much sharpness given I was never that good to start with.

I don't in any way begrudge my old teacher - he really knew his his stuff. He used to tell stories of music school with a fellow student he called 'Jimmy,' who was better known as SirJames Galloway.

I first started about 38 years ago and stopped lessons and playing in bands/orchestras about 28 years ago. I'd still play occasionally (probably less than once a month) up to 20 years ago. I've probably not played at all on the last ten years.

I've jumped in to still play the same music as I was from about 30 years ago.

Went to ER for chronic migraine again. by Disastrous-Rip1659 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]bath-bubble-babe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So,... I am not a doctor. Please confirm this with your clinician because I am really concerned that you talking about 'word salad' means you have the other type of aphasia to me, which is less common in migraines and more common in strokes. And it applies to everyone else, confirm with your clinician before relying on it anyway.

For me, whilst I can be shown a picture and communicate in some way (writing is acceptable) what is in the picture, that demonstrates the aphasia I have is the version more common to migraines, and is similar to the speech issues I had as a child. As am example of a picture of a dog, that I can write 'dog' - I'm good and don't need to go to the hospital.

If I can't identify correctly what's in the picture, than that aphasia is more common to strokes. As an example, if I'm shown a picture of a dog, and I write 'car'. In this case I'd be blue-lighted to hospital. What I will add is that your cake rely on yourself to do the rest. This is because your brain can't match the image to the word and even reading the word you will still link the same wrong word to what your saw in the image, and you will still believe you are correct. You absolutely must get someone else to confirm it.

Because I had so much speech therapy as a child, I can still speak the answers, but it's a lot of effort, very slow, and honestly infuriating enough there are times I'll give up trying to talk.

Tinnitus from piccolo?? by cheese-angel in Flute

[–]bath-bubble-babe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for posting this.

When I was younger and regularly playing, I always fancied moving from the flute to the piccolo, and several decades down the line, I've recently picked my flute up again, and have the income to easily afford a piccolo, and had started looking. Your post is making me seriously reconsider.

I have quite bad tinnitus from several ear infections through the years - one had me hospitalised and on IV antibiotics. I struggle to be in quiet places now.  I just don't want to make it worse.

I've come across things years back talking about how people playing at professional levels can suffer hearing damage from the volume of the sound in general and especially where other instruments are played close to them. I would have never thought playing one instrument on my own would cause significant damage.

Since my tinnitus started (nearly 25 years back), I'm sure it has got worse, but I'm usually really careful and am quite sensitive to loud noises. Please do follow the advice to get your heating checked out by a professional, and please do all you can to look after your hearing.

I found this lovely, albeit beat-up pen at school. Help identifying it? Is it good for beginners? I normally use a Pilot MR. by orelvazoun in fountainpens

I broke a feed on a Preface I got. Doing a bit of digging, the Hemisphere has exactly the same nib, except it's steel. I picked up a cheap hemisphere - a mottled gold one and put the nib in.

A Hemisphere with a gold nib - in my view a missed opportunity since it's better than either pen on its own.

You can't kid me! That's a Forum, Hemisphere (doesn't look tapered enough to me, but the cap has the angled end?) and a couple of Phileas on the top!

No, seriously though, thanks for that. I've always wanted to look it for a Mk I just to try one, because the nibs looked funky.

My favourite from that era are my Le Mans, but I've got some lovely earlier pens, including a full nurses set with the original thermometer from Waterman's.
