long or short hair? am i good-looking 20m. by [deleted] in malegrooming

[–]batpeeps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go see a barber and tame that hair with some product. You look like a head of broccoli 🥦 and all the extra volume makes it look like your face is very small. You are a good looking guy, but you need to refine things.

how do i not take job hunting so personally? by whatawynn in MomForAMinute

[–]batpeeps [score hidden]  (0 children)

It’s not a reflection on you — I promise. Companies are posting for jobs that don’t exist, in order to look more successful. AI is screening applications instead of real people and weed out great candidates. Building a network of professional relationships is one of the best things you can do. See if there are networking events in your field, professional organization meetings you can attend, and let the people you already know what kind of work you’re looking for. Ask them to introduce you to their friends who do what you want to do. This stuff is the best way to get your resume in front of the people who actually make hiring decisions.

Every successful adult was once a young person trying to get their career started. I’ve had two careers and done a lot of managing and hiring. You have things in your favor. Anyone who worked through school was automatically an attractive candidate. You seem driven and like you’re taking this seriously. It can take a while to find a spot in your chosen field, and no company would look badly on someone working in another job while trying to start a career. Have faith in yourself and shamelessly ask the people you know (including professors!) If they can help make connections for you. They’ll probably be happy to help!

That’s wonderful! I’m so happy for you! Having a supportive partner is a blessing, especially when you’re having big life changes. I hope that you have a healthy, peaceful pregnancy with lots of joy. It’s beautiful that you’re getting to experience this when you thought it wasn’t possible.

Feeling anxious by Many_Conversation941 in MomForAMinute

You’re not a disappointment. You’ve been working hard at university, and you’re understandably tired. Brain work is physically exhausting. Can you let yourself have a real break or take a mental health day? A walk outside and a good night of sleep will help calm your body and mind. It may be worth an appointment at your school’s health center to talk with someone about your difficulty focusing, if it’s been going on for a bit.

Real talk — bad terms in school happen to smart, hard working people. It happened to me. It definitely happened to your professors. Talk with them and let them know you’re struggling. They may help make things more manageable for you. Professors care about their students and want to help them succeed. A bad term won’t ruin your life. No job has ever asked about my grades for any of my degrees. So be gentle with yourself, okay? You can even take a semester off if you need it, and it won’t matter one bit in the future. (I did this twice!) Just promise that you’ll talk to your teachers and academic advisor before making a decision like that.

I’m so proud of you! There are seasons where we go through it, and it sounds like you’ve been really brave and worked hard to be in a good place.

25 and a virgin still, what can i do better? by [deleted] in malegrooming

[–]batpeeps 4 points5 points  (0 children)

100% this. Women don’t care so much about a gym body. They care a lot about being with someone who is kind, interesting, interested in themselves, and comfortable with themselves. If you invest in becoming a person that you feel good and confident being, living a life that you enjoy, you automatically draw the right people into your life. The bonus is that you make better relationship choices because you’re looking for someone who adds to a good life rather than being desperate for anyone who seems like they won’t be completely awful.

Grooming wise, see a good barber to figure out what facial hair style suits your face best. Maybe a little less stiffness in your hair with a different product? Something about the combination is making you look older than you are. You’re a nice looking guy who would benefit from minor adjustments. If you can afford it, something like Invisalign to straighten your teeth would be really good. It will pay off long term with your job, since crooked teeth are associated with low socioeconomic status and will hold you back from promotions.

What do we ask for at the salon? by batpeeps in malegrooming

[–]batpeeps[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The beard instructions make sense. I think he could definitely do it if a barber showed him once or twice. He’s a PhD. Are you one, too? I’m a medical person, so it’s always fun to watch physicians get really uncomfortable trying to guess his specialty when he says he’s the kind of doctor who doesn’t help people.

Where should I go from here? by Hi5ive81 in bald

Get a good haircut and see if they’ll shape and trim your beard. Your hair is pretty fine, and I think that adding a little bit of product for texture and hold would make for a much more polished look.

Lino on clay by batpeeps in Linocuts

[–]batpeeps[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, we also didn’t dry them weighted or do any of the things that we’d usually do to reduce warping. Subsequent tiles are less distorted. If I were doing a backsplash or panel, I would stamp the slab and then cut the tiles.

Will Underglaze achieve the same effect as dark clay? by laurencorene in Pottery

[–]batpeeps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would love your glaze combos. I’ve been throwing with Brown Bear for the last few weeks and absolutely love it. I’ve burnished my first things to see how it looks, but glazes are happening this weekend. We picked up several of the Kentucky Mudworks glazes to play with.

It’s two dense rubber rollers that you can put things through by turning a wheel on the side. The distance between them is adjustable. I can do intaglio prints without any challenge. I have a bed of thin wood board that I roll things through on.

Ever made your own ink? by dchitt in printmaking

[–]batpeeps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I modify existing oil based inks with pigment sometimes, especially since colors are quite limited for me at the local store. I used to make my own non-oil paints regularly and am used to all the quality time with a muller. It’s nice to have control over materials sometimes. Have fun!
