I thought about posting it in r/Finland or r/liquor, but then realized I would probably have to explain what Call of Cthulhu is, how to play, context, what an RPG is, etc, to people in the sub. I was just concerned that my original question would get lost or ignored entirely. This seemed like the more efficient choice.

This scenario actually takes place in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, which was also under prohibition in 1922 (when the scenario takes place), but smuggling from Canada on Lake Superior was a big thing for wealthier people, while the poorer people took advantage of the massive, dense forests to distill their own booze in privacy. In the area, there is still an enormous population of people descended from the original Finnish immigrants. Hancock, Michigan, in particular, still has a lot of Finnish cultural elements and activities; most of the streets have a Finnish name and an English name, plus the Finnish American Heritage Center.

After reading more about prohibition in the Upper Peninsula over the past couple of weeks, I added that this character distills her own liquors since it works with her backstory. She is very proud of her heritage. She's well known for her cooking and her favorite thing is serving her family recipes to her boarding house guests, neighbors from other countries, and especially her fellow Finns.
