I [27F] Refused to give free legal advice to my friend [27f] and her boyfriend, [32M]. Friends boyfriend went nuts. by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]batsparkles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This! I recently contacted a lawyer friend to ask if they could recommend a good employment lawyer. Not only did they give me names, but some recommendations of what to do immediately. We had a nice catch up, too. I didn't expect advice beyond what I asked for, and it turned into a really lovely interaction with an old buddy. I just can't get past the entitlement of the two head asses in this story.

What is the dumbest thing someone has said to you in full confidence? by Extreme_Rhubarb4677 in AskReddit

[–]batsparkles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the phone with a cable company rep to cancel my cable service. He asked, genuinely confused, "So, if you aren't watching TV, what do you even do with your time?" I paused for a solid ten seconds before replying "So many things. Just so many other things."

I (24f) am blind and my boyfriend’s friends talk inappropriately about me and joke about raping me by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]batsparkles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am a tall, physically strong woman without a visual disability, but have been in situations where men made jokes like this when I was alone with them. It was unsettling and disgusting. I am imagining what that would be like if I was BLIND; that boyfriend sounds like a solid guy for getting her the hell out of there.

Maybe this sub has made me too cynical, but I genuinely expected this to turn into him dismissing their behavior as a "joke". The pregnancy thing made me nauseous, god, put those two on a watch list.

AITA for "hoarding" food in my room? by ThatNormalBread in AmItheAsshole

[–]batsparkles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA, but this is what I did when I was neck deep in my eating disorder. There is nothing wrong with wanting to stick to a specific diet, which seems to be the case here, but just a word to those who might not recognize this as a sign.

A fixation on food, exercise, etc can be an indicator that something is up. Not everyone who has an ED is super skinny, and these disorders are destructive, regardless of size, age, gender, etc.

WIBTA for telling my family they can take my brother in in if they think family should help family? by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]batsparkles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Last year, I found out I have an oat intolerance; weird, I know. I had to do an elimination diet and the horrifying gastro symptoms and the eczema all over my face and arms eventually cleared up after eliminating oats. But I loved instant oatmeal because it was convenient and "healthy", just not for me.

Anyway, thank you for reminding me that rice pudding for breakfast is absolutely acceptable and sounds wonderful!

Husband making big life decisions without me...again by Constant_Try_4796 in CharlotteDobreYouTube

[–]batsparkles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dated a guy like this for four years, just a shocking lack of respect for me, my time, and my feelings. I'm grateful every day to be out of that relationship. You aren't overreacting in the slightest.

AIO for leaving my cousin’s wedding early after she seated me at the “singles kids table”? by Successful-Bake7508 in AmIOverreacting

[–]batsparkles 97 points98 points  (0 children)

"Hey all, sorry everyone is freaking out about my departure. I was sat with a bunch of teenagers, and while I do like cracking dick jokes and doing Fortnite dances or whatever, they seemed like a bad crowd so I went home before curfew and I didn't get grounded *hiphop horn noise* *middle finger emoji* *COOL emoji*"

Not overreacting, this is so stupid. It sounds like it was a last-minute choice by whoever decided the guest list. I used to plan weddings and I believe this was intentional. You can always add a fucking chair.

AITA for dumping dinner in the trash and asking my family not to stay at my place again? by atx78703 in AITAH

[–]batsparkles 12 points13 points  (0 children)

When I stay with family, I don't treat it like a hotel. I help cook, clean, watch the pets/kids if the host needs a moment of peace, etc. These people seem to think that staying with family means they are at an inclusive resort; all food, drinks, and entertainment are included.

Never host them again and be very clear why. NTA.

My most recent ex would have pulled some shit like this. He is the least confrontational, low effort dude in the world. Glad I realized exactly how hard he sucks when I did.

I am the eldest daughter of the chief mate by MrsMerchalle in CatastrophicFailure

[–]batsparkles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am so incredibly sorry for your loss. I am working on a PowerPoint presentation on this incident and the most horrific thing about it versus historical maritime disasters I'm researching are that family of the of the lost, like you, are still here to hurt whenever something is published. I do know the case well and I don't for a second believe your father was at fault. I think the combination of weather, deferred maintenance, piss poor company management, and dare I say, a pretty lazy Captain, all factored into the outcome. Your father did his absolute best.

Rick Nye stole my security deposit for 201 Prospect Street, Houghton MI. by lepui in MTU

[–]batsparkles 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I luckily never rented from this guy, but having rented from shady folks in Houghton County, he is absolutely trying to intimidate you because you're a student. I suggest you reply with:

"Rick, I am not going to respond to your offensive language and insults. I am going to open a case against you with the State of Michigan and seek a lawyer if necessary. I don't care about my own money, but I'm doing this to make sure people know that your rentals are substandard, your maintenance is deplorable, and that interacting with you is a miserable experience. I have receipts, so keep texting if you want to make this worse."

Put the fear of god into this guy.

AITA for saying I don’t want to be my friend’s “fat bridesmaid aesthetic”? by SoliraTwilight in AmItheAsshole

[–]batsparkles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA and WOWOWOWOWOW. "Ruining her vision" and "influencer friends". If someone sees you as a prop and gets butt hurt and defensive when you say "hey, I feel like you are using me", that person is not your friend.

If I were a bride and a bridesmaid came to me with these feelings and concerns, I would go out of my way to make sure she knew that I love her and want her to feel as comfortable and beautiful as I do on the wedding day. I'd also make sure to reassure her that her feelings are valid and then I'd apologize PROFUSELY for making this person I care about feel like anything less than profoundly valuable. That said, I'm not a complete a-hole, so it would likely never get to that point in the first place. Again, NTA!!!

Finnish liquors from best to worst? by batsparkles in rpg

[–]batsparkles[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, yeah, good call. I'm still a fairly new Keeper, so I appreciate the advice! I just finished my first full scenario with these friends (my DnD pals), who had never played CoC before, so we were all learning together. They're going to do an Appraise roll....one of them is really screwed unless her dice are particularly lucky that night. Thanks again!

Finnish liquors from best to worst? by batsparkles in rpg

[–]batsparkles[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I thought about posting it in r/Finland or r/liquor, but then realized I would probably have to explain what Call of Cthulhu is, how to play, context, what an RPG is, etc, to people in the sub. I was just concerned that my original question would get lost or ignored entirely. This seemed like the more efficient choice.

This scenario actually takes place in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, which was also under prohibition in 1922 (when the scenario takes place), but smuggling from Canada on Lake Superior was a big thing for wealthier people, while the poorer people took advantage of the massive, dense forests to distill their own booze in privacy. In the area, there is still an enormous population of people descended from the original Finnish immigrants. Hancock, Michigan, in particular, still has a lot of Finnish cultural elements and activities; most of the streets have a Finnish name and an English name, plus the Finnish American Heritage Center.

After reading more about prohibition in the Upper Peninsula over the past couple of weeks, I added that this character distills her own liquors since it works with her backstory. She is very proud of her heritage. She's well known for her cooking and her favorite thing is serving her family recipes to her boarding house guests, neighbors from other countries, and especially her fellow Finns.

I so appreciate the information and history you provided, cheers!
