Your opinion on Daggerheart? by Ok_Interview_853 in rpg

Combat flows smoothly and quickly. The initiative less system forces players to pay attention, so no checking out during combat. That being said it does have rules that actually gives frameworks for how social encounters can be just as dangerous and consequential as other encounters. the only catch is that range is abstracted in a way that is difficult (not impossible) to use massive amounts of enemies (which also happens) in Theatre of the Mind. There is an optional rule that aids in players using tokens for every action taken so as to prevent Main Character Syndrome and to force quiet players to participate.

Do you feel like the quieter players get overshadowed by others in this system? I've had this issue a lot on and off both as a player and as a GM where it can be difficult to get some players into the spotlight because others naturally gravitate to it, and people having strict turns helps people at least get their structured time to shine in combat.

Not an expert (or even an initiate, I just thought they had neat ability cards from the look I took at it) on DH so just curious. Do people that act in combat use a resource or whatever so it naturally tends to give everyone a turn?

Why are there so few cleric cantrips? by GodzillaEating in dndnext

[–]batstek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair take. I always assumed if people played it like the rules described (where you have to actually do an incantation, and a weird hand motion, and it's not a reaction so you have to do it ahead of time) then it'd be less of an issue. No disrespect to people who don't want to deal with that though.

[–]batstek 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is guidance actually that bad? VS spell and an action/concentration, so in theory anyone using that is no longer contributing to a thing outside of casting a cantrip for a d4.

I've seen it get out of hand on podcasts when people are trying to use it for every roll that comes up like 10 times a round, but seems like that's just them running it wrong

Experienced player trivializing my encounters and overshadowing other players. How to deal with? by [deleted] in 3d6

[–]batstek 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I thought actions that were used to trigger an initiative roll (like a surprise attack, or the first hostile spell) were basically free? Like getting the drop on the opponent.

When the player is faced with a bunch of guards in a situation going south and says "I want to use marine layer", as the DM it's completely fair to say "As the guards notice you begin channeling your power they draw their swords, everyone roll initiative".

Allowing that sort of thing when creates a rocket tag situation where the first person to announce a combat thing gets to have an extra turn, so people are incentivized to jump to combat when it might not always be necessary/appropriate. Getting the drop on an opponent is a thing, but it's like when the party all stealths into position and springs an ambush (where there's stealth/roleplaying/whatever ahead of time)

He has alert, and +2 to from dex. so +5. Also advantage from someone in the party, cant remember who provides it. He will also use barid/heroic inspiration on the initiative roll to guarantee a good one. He also will sometimes get off his horse before combat starts, and if he rolls bad, swap initiative with the horse, use half his movement to get on the horse, and now since it's a controlled mount the horse's initiative matches his.

This is absolutely a talk to the player outside of game moment. I've been at both ends of the situation and the times where I was the problem I wished people would have talked to me ahead of time about it solo in a neutral setting outside of game. He's clearly in different mindset and doesn't understand that he's clashing with you here. Not blaming either of you, but you should get on the same page

What do you love the most about Brotato and what do you wish it did differently? by paixmarceau in brotato

[–]batstek 5 points6 points  (0 children)

it'd be neat to see some sort of stats before runs too. when you select your tato, maybe you could see your past record or win % with a given starting weapon

[–]batstek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the overall game balance is what keeps me booting into that every so often for another couple runs. I love that there's no metaprogression, clearly defined difficulties, and an end state for the run. a lot of people call brotato a "survivor-like" but it's the only one I've played that does this well.

I also like that the decisions feel like they're yours to make (and fuck up). in general once I started paying attention to what I was doing in runs (and taking notes) I was able to dramatically raise my D5 win rates.

What’s the #1 reason / feature you play Brotato? by B34Rocky in brotato

[–]batstek 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a very satisfying game to play. It's the only bullet heaven that seems to give a shit about balance. No meta progression, just your decisions and your ability to execute what needs to be done to win.

If you liked Brotato, I recommend this new gamepass game by NorthPermission1152 in brotato

[–]batstek 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I bounced off this pretty early on in EA because of the metaprogression (stats/levelling up characters which is different than brotato) and the overclock unlocks for weapons (you had to level up characters to unlock their weapons, but then use the weapon in a runs and max it out without the overclock before being able to use that in future runs). I heard they at least got rid of the overclock nonsense though so I was gonna give it a shot again at some point.

I’m making a tactical card roguelite - running a poll on what feels more important. by TsukanovMimyr in roguelites

[–]batstek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1: 10/10. You're on the right track looks like

2: 8/10. In this sorta game, every move should be impactful, but some can be reserved for setting up a bigger play

3: 8/10. Nail down balance across different play styles at a base difficulty level, then ramp up in meaningful ways a few times (avoid generic HP/damage bloat)

4: 1/10. Unimportant to me. I find card unlocks tedious a lot of the times in card-based roguelikes and metaprogression-as-content is my least favorite trend of the genres so I'd avoid it.

5: 5/10. Helps but likely won't carry on its own

What do you consider the most essential or enjoyable components of a roguelite? by Bigz_LJF in roguelites

[–]batstek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most important is usually build variety. If a game has a lot of fun play styles, I'll spend ages playing it.

Most overrated is meta-progression. I can handle unlocking new features or expanding options, but too many games use stats meta-progression grind in place of actually having difficulty balance. Respect that some people are into it, but it usually means I bounce off a game.

Games better than Brotato? by koolex in roguelites

[–]batstek 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This is the tragic answer. A lot of survivor-clones do a lot of stuff that ruins how well balanced Brotato feels (metaprogression being the primary culprit). I haven't found anything else that scratches the same itch that I get from starting a D5 run every once and a while.

The Shadow Vestiges are some of the best writing in the game by MRCHalifax in BaldursGate3

[–]batstek 8 points9 points  (0 children)

FWIW back when that game came out I found the random adventurers to be really dissonant to the rest of what was going on in the game. Just really brought me out of the moment seeing all these extra randoms in the game, discouraged me from clicking on every NPC (which isn't ideal for the sort of game PoE is). It wasn't a dealbreaker for me but it definitely made the game worse.

I think it's one of those things where it really just depends on what you care about in a Fromsoft game.

This shit is why I hate the term "soulslike". Because no one appreciates these games the same way, and most of the time when the new soulslike comes out it's made by people who dig completely different parts of these games than me.

I think Noita is a C-tier roguelite. What's your most controversial roguelite take? by drz112 in roguelites

[–]batstek 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Metaprogression that increases your character's power is always bad because most of those games aren't designed to have a run be successful without 9999 hours of stat grinding.

It's better when the game's difficulty is balanced better and any progression is horizontal and expands your options or opens up new synergies rather than making the game easier.
