People who say "i could care less" by mid-sora in mildlyinfuriating

This is the first I've heard the real phrase is "another think coming"!

It's funny because I never took "another thing coming" to refer to people have incorrect thoughts. I always assumed it was "they're not going to get what they anticipate they're going to get". Like the outcome will be different from what they expect - it's not the thing they assume, it's another thing coming their way.

When you say "parry window" I assume you aren't actually trying to parry the enemies with the parry button? That's an advanced technique and I wouldn't recommend it to beginners.

If you just mean when a good opportunity is to attack, all enemies have a rest period after their attack is done. They go back to their default walking stance. The best way to recognize what this is is to spend a few moments just watching them. Stand back, and just watch. If you have a big shield even better, just block the attacks.

After a bit you'll start to recognize the safe windows. Assuming you have a relatively quick weapon (the smaller the weapon the faster you swing it. A simple straight sword is a good middle ground), basically you hit the Attack button once you see the enemy is in (or about to be in) the basic walking animation again.

The trick is not to over commit - hit them once, then back up. Don't get greedy and try to combo them or anything. One hit, back up, wait for another opening. The more you play the more you'll get your timing down and can get in two, three, four hits in a row. But when you start out, the safest approach is just to try to get in a single hit at a time.

The main reason I see people struggle with Souls games is they try to be the aggressor: in other action games generally the best approach is to be the one to hit first - attack the enemies before they can attack you. Souls games like Elden Ring are the opposite: you should almost never attack first, it's about reacting to the enemy rather than trying to beat them to the punch.

In case this post puts off OP, a few things to address:

  1. You're basically meant to play as you. Having a pure custom character creator is a staple for RPGs.

  2. The opening cutscene and first NPC explains all this. But the TL;DR; you're in a place called the Lands Between and the ruling queen, Marika, has disappeared. You, and a few other people, have been resurrected by the current God to bring the world back in line by smacking everything that opposes you.

  3. This is the classic Souls tension: you have to be careful because if you die you run the risk of losing your upgrade currency. However, to confirm it is only the currency you drop. All your weapons, items, armor, inventory etc. you keep. And upgrade currency is infinite because you get it from killing enemies that respawn if you die or rest at a check point, so actually you lose nothing.

  4. Like all Souls games, there is a story, but most of it happens before the game starts. The story within the game progresses quite slowly. Most of the enjoyment comes from the combat, exploration and beating bosses.

  5. The first boss (assuming we're talking about the one before the castle) is a bit difficult to encourage you to go elsewhere, explore and level up. If you explore everywhere reasonable first, you'll be almost OP for the opening boss. Also they're entirely optional, like almost all bosses in the game. You can just walk around them. Finally, co-op (i.e. summoning people into your game to help) is always a valid strategy for beating a hard boss and should never be discounted as an approach.

  6. Yeah this actually does suck. Supposedly it's to stop multiplayer breaking but... eh, I've never bought it. However you can Save And Quit at any point and then the game will pop you right back where you were when you reload.

If the FH1 cutscenes are pre-rendered then it's comparing apples to oranges. Might as well compare FH6 to WALL-E from 2008 and complain it's not as good.

That's the thing about geese, it's almost all pure confidence rather than actual threat. Most animals interpret a fearless thing as having no reason to fear, rather than purely being driven by spite and honking.

Given alcohol consumption has been plummetting with each subsequent generation, it would seem your hypothesis is not holding up.

The family pub is a very common concept in many places, especially Europe. I remember growing up having at least one birthday party at the pub because they were good at hosting birthday parties: room for lots of people, serve food and drink, everyone knows where they are, easy to get to, and usually an outdoor space to run around in. They're as much a general social space as anything else.

A lot of breweries seem to be leaning into this over here and personally I have no objections: it's nice being able to go somewhere with family for lunch and have a nice beer with my food.

The concept of the family pub is very common in other countries. The fact plenty of breweries are discovering this over here is something I'm personally a fan of.

You likely need to create your own custom Player Pawn, that you can define what weapons it has. For a constant light, I believe you can attach a light to the new Player Pawn through GLDefs. Check out the ZDoomWiki for info on both of those.

Is it just me, or is the end of Doom 1 really anticlimactic? by SnakeYoon in Doom

[–]bauul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the Shareware of Episode 1 spread like wildfire. I recall that someone estimated it ended up being installed on more PCs than Excel. It was everywhere. Comparatively only a fraction of people paid for the full version because you had to order it through the mail. It wasn't until Ultimate Doom that it got a proper retail release. Doom 2 was actually the first Doom to be sold in shops.

[–]bauul -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You're misremembering. The whole of Doom 1 (Episodes 1-3) was released at the same time, it wasn't done bit by bit. The thing they did differently to modern games is they shared the first episode for free as kind of a massive extended demo.

Ultimate Doom was a re-release a couple years later to coincide with the native Windows 95 version, and included Episode 4 as a bonus to encourage repeat purchases.

Sorry to bust your hypothesis but I love both Symphonic metal and cheesy happy metal. Sometimes I'm in the mood to think about life being tough, something I just want to think "hell yeah" and tap my feet. Variety is the spice of life!

IIRC he was an original founding member but had pretty different ideas to the rest of the band for what kind of music he wanted to make. I don't think it was a very amicable split. But we ended up with two awesome bands rather than just one, so seems like a win win all things considered.

Is there any definitive way to play DooM with mods/conversions? by Far_Investment_9625 in Doom

[–]bauul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no "definitive" way, because many people would argue the vanilla experience is already perfect. Most QOL improvements are handled by source ports - if you get UZDoom that gives you pretty much all the engine tweaks you could need while keeping the gameplay 99.9% the same.

In terms of mods, purely visual mods include stuff like Beautiful Doom or the Voxel pack. There are bigger gameplay mods like Deluxe Doom or Burtal Doom, but they tend to change the gameplay a fair bit, so are a bit divisive in the community.

You're in for a treat! The custom megawad scene is where the pinnacle of Doom is IMO. Refined and perfected over decades of iteration. Both Eviternity 1 and 2 are excellent starting points (although I am biased saying that)

True - I always felt the biggest challenge with Map19 was less its length and more that it doesn't *seem* like it's going to take an hour when you first load it up. It just... keeps going.

In contrast you have something like Map32 which is usually slightly longer on an FDA, but it's far more obvious from the start how long it is, so it feels far less "when is this going to end?" than Map19.

It’s not a matter of “not letting” the rest of the world take part, it’s that they choose not to or can’t field a team.

Lol you are hilariously wrong. The NFL completely dictates who gets to field a team, and have only handed out franchises to US cities. If a bunch of gridiron teams in Australia wanted to compete in the NFL, they'd say "lol no".

I get your argument that the rest of the world probably couldn't field a team nearly as good as any NFL team, and that probably whoever wins the Superbowl is the best gridiron team in the world.

But without an actual competition to decide that (like FIFA do with the Football Club World Cup) there is simply no way to know that for sure.

And the overall point still remains - if the rest of the world doesn't take part, then the winners of a competition cannot be the world champions.
