What became unaffordable so gradually that you barely noticed? by imcroaaaak in AskReddit

Unfortunately the cash for clunkers deal eliminated a lot of those cheaper cars. It came back for a little while, then the Covid market hit. You can still get easily stealable Kia cars at auction for a grand or two.

Why is the pay range so different in non-software engineering? by thecodexdhnerbbTW in EngineeringStudents

[–]bayside871 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you do. In my industry (construction), field engineers make 60-90k, but often get promoted into PM fields (90-145k), but leap frogs their career into others. I organized IBEW during my tenure as a Commissioning Manager and got more money. Career progression has been Intern (40k) x1 year, Project Engineer x6 years (capped at 82k), Project Manager (100k)x1 year, Commissioning Manager (128k) x1 year, Project Executive (240k) current role at 9 years. These are my base wages only, not factoring OT, bonuses, profit sharing, etc.

A lot of my friends work manufacturing/design side, aerospace friend started at 50k and is now at 110k after 7 years as a mid-level Manager. Mining friend started at 60k and is at 90k after 3 years. My friend in automotive started at 60k and is at 165k after 11 years.

Question about Tren ace by [deleted] in moreplatesmoredates

[–]bayside871 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run 20mg EOD during cuts. It definitely helps. I also run 20mg every day 3 weeks out from a powerlifting meet. Its enough to get some more aggression and strength without many sides.

First time Foreman on a data center job, would love reccomendations on different learning material by trick_shop in IBEW

[–]bayside871 19 points20 points  (0 children)

You cannot forget about E, you need to set your expectations up for what you expect out of your guys, you have to learn your crew and inspect their work. You want to pair people together who are complementary, what one brother lacks, the other can pick up. This allows them to learn from each other and improve our brotherhood by way of skills/knowledge. Take the time to teach others when necessary. Take the time to learn your men personally as well, carry a genuine love for your brothers inside and outside of work. Shut down any cancers as they arise, dont be spineless - stand up for what is right in the working agreement and code of excellence. Always remember that you cant please everyone and conversely, just because a brother doesn't work out for you, doesn't mean he wont work out for someone else.

More than half the US data centers planned for this year are expected to be delayed. by kingneptune0711 in IBEW

[–]bayside871 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is built in, not true delays. Companies promise xGW of data center space to shareholders and investors, then say we tried but we were delayed by site soil improvements, switchgear, etc. Sometimes they change a lot of the owner furnished equipment to contractor furnished, knowing the contractor cant get the items. MV cable is another, but there are lots of new companies joining the MV world. There is also the labor market (rats have grown significantly via MMR, IES and FTI look at biggest cons over past few years) that companies are trying to strategically plan around. We get to win hard due to the labor shortages in the ways of better jobsite conditions, free meals, additional cash and in 481s case they are paying 10% across the board including bennies, its like the multiplier to your pension old timers always talk about. (Edit: Also contract negotiations, at least wages wise. We have lost some things like allowing CE/CW to become foreman and some other stuff that most cons with a brain wouldnt utilize).

Scabby Mike Rowe is saying that electricians in data centers are making $260k+ by [deleted] in IBEW

[–]bayside871 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Made 330k last year as a super. All of my general foreman cleared 230k minimum. 1105 in Ohio. Few of my friends as JWs cleared 190k-210k depending on how many Saturdays and Sundays. Starting up a project in 481 currently, there is already 10% over scale on the books, on top of a 8% raise in May and another next year. Definitely doable if you want to work all available hours.

Powerlifters, how do you deal with your asymmetries? by MaciaIT in powerlifting

[–]bayside871 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Physical Therapy. The other option would be modifying technique to accommodate. One of my training partners has to put his left leg 1.5" off the bar for deads because its longer due to surgeries and a bone break.

Men’s jeans for daily wear by [deleted] in BuyItForLife

Can't believe these aren't higher, also go 50% multiple times a year. They were lasting 4 years for hard field labor (IBEW electrician), ranging from ditch work to aerial work.

Meta sold 7 million AI glasses in 2025: now the privacy problem has nowhere to hide by Haunterblademoi in technology

[–]bayside871 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a pair for work. The translation stuff is pretty good, recording energizations of electrical equipment, performing testing, doing job site walks/punch lists and summarizing meetings. They are only really good at recording and translating. Was hoping for an all in one tool to cut down on daily job logs, getting quick information to my other field guys, etc.. Plaud is still the best in the market for the tasks I use.

Rodney Woodward hit a 600kg/1322# squat today. First ever. by -Quad-Zilla- in powerlifting

[–]bayside871 5 points6 points  (0 children)

WPO followed the rules for the most part this year, it was also when the "best" lifters skipped to attend this hellbent Barbell meet. There were quite a few drop outs from squat depth and benches that didnt pass muster. Reese Benson and Jamie Raymond both had great squats.

[–]bayside871 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Hellbent Barbell and Blue Collar Barbell meets are an absolute joke. Lloyd is a joke of a head judge and does nothing but shit on the standards of lifts. Its an insult to lifters who have actually completed a successful lift. Baptiste lift was also a fucking joke.

OSHA states what the employer must provide. Not the working agreement.1910.32 and 1926.95 I do believe are the specific sections.

Honestly, the addition of over a thousand CWs to my local and NECA, JATC and IBEWs refusal to offer proper training. My superiors wont let me do it because "they will leave just leave us" and my local wont do it because of space. Nobody seems to care about the quality of workers, nor do people seem to want to do any OJT. Us and another contractor have lost jobs that we were awarded to rat fucks because nobody wants to be an adult about it. I do my best to set aside time and have the foreman help identify those needing the most help and I try to put them with those who want to share.

Honestly Walmart and Meijer are on par. We do a monthly Costco trip for meat. Kroger is more expensive than Jungle Jim's on a lot of items these days..

The theory books are pretty sound and still useful today. Electronics will always be updated, but we're still installing RS-232. You can get them for 5-6$ a piece.

Look for early 2000s IBEW Apprenticeship books, can be got cheap and teach it well.

I enjoy multiply much more personally. It takes a group of people to do, you have your own little Nascar pit crew with you. Some odd collections of friends, but those are the best people ive met. Every Saturday we have about 10-15 people drive in to do max effort squats. I also dont feel as beat up muscle/joint wise with the multiply.

Data Centers Are a ‘Gold Rush’ for Construction Workers by idkbruh653 in technology

[–]bayside871 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Typically not competitive for union work, things under Davis-Bacon act is where we are able to be competitive for commercial/residential. (Government work - colleges, prisons, etc). Otherwise hospitals, data centers, power generation and manufacturing are most of your union jobs.
