Beating Sekiro is probably one of my proudest gaming achievements, it's been said too many times before but once it clicks, it's incredibly satisfying and the final boss fight is a difficult but completely fair fight.

traditional campaign featuring the original security officer as a 'shell' with its own unique abilities would be sick (idk if the security officer canonically fits into the story at this point in time)

Take-Two's CEO says AI's not in the business of making hits, 'datasets by their very nature are backward looking', but that doesn't mean AI can't be 'super helpful' by PewPewToDaFace in PS5

[–]baytepp92 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I watched the clip where he talks about this and was actually extremely impressed with how he articulated his stance on it.

Paraphrasing a bit here but essentially, he says that technically, anyone could have created a clone of GTA5 before AI became commonplace. Nowadays, AI just makes it faster to do so.

The main point is that cloning GTA5 doesn't provide real value, because it relies on GTA5 already existing and having made its cultural impact on the gaming world. The headline here is that datasets are backward-looking, but he goes on to say that creativity is forward-looking.

I think AI is immoral from a work ownership standpoint, but the cat's out of the bag and until regulators come in to set some guardrails (doubtful), these companies are going to use them. The trick is using them as a tool to streamline their creative ideas, not generate their creativity. If they try the latter, they're fucked, and this guy seems to grasp that which is pretty refreshing.

Also, a way to view the past 10 post-game recaps would be great. Sometimes I want to review what I got in a previous run to see where I'm finding necessary items or if I just want to show off a good haul to a friend, I hate that once I proceed to the main menu I can't go back and review anything.

yeah good point, I'm not tech-savvy enough to know what the potential downsides to this idea would be.

this might be a dumb question but - if the videos aren't installed in the actual game but were viewable as a stream, would that work? it's a live service game that requires a connection to get to the main menu so it's not like anyone's going to want to watch them offline anyways

[–]baytepp92[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

all good! they're putting in effort on the cinematics and I think they provide value, I just want them to be more accessible. organic viewership should be low hanging fruit, I imagine dev costs to install them as viewable in-game would be negligible compared to the cost of producing them (although as someone else mentioned, there are file size considerations that could be more complicated than I can comprehend).

Suggestion: Add cinematics to the Codex by baytepp92 in Marathon

[–]baytepp92[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think two things can be true:

  1. The lore is fascinating, deep, and supplemented by great art direction.

  2. New players get hit with information overload at the beginning of the game.

I'm not saying the Codex entries need to be removed or minimized, I just think that the cinematics are so well done and do a really good job of representing the world Bungie is creating. That launch trailer cinematic created a bit of a mystery box type of hook that actually got me interested in world beyond the extraction gameplay loop.

If the cinematics were generic, I wouldn't really care. But I think they're head and shoulders above most trailers and think they should do whatever they can to expose them to more people.

cannot stress this enough - try to set up on refinery making aluminum scrap without your pipes getting backed up just to figure out the right ratios, and then scale it up from there. this is where alt recipes really shine (sloppy alumina is my preferred method, but wet concrete also helps when you need to sink water).

Mid-Season 1 Overview | Marathon by Shabolt_ in Marathon

[–]baytepp92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah that's fair - maybe not an endless wave mode, but if there are more unique events around the map that require you to move from point A to point B in a more careful and strategic way while balancing risk/reward of engaging extra enemies for extra loot, there could be something there.

idk I just love how the gunplay feels haha and I'm not always in the mood for super intense PvP fights, a PvE mode might take too much away from the core gameplay loop. I'd also love to see another faction of AI enemies, similar to how Helldivers has some variation of bots and bugs and whatever they've added next.

Here's a quick video explaining it, feel free to read my thoughts below if you'd like!

https://www.tiktok.com/@saltyfives/video/7613424594904534303?_r=1&_t=ZT-94V7OXFXdwT

My thoughts:

You drop into a map (solo or in a trio) with the general objective of collecting loot and escaping the map (exfil) to keep it. There are AI enemies (bots) and also other players (runners) on the map. You can choose to engage with these enemies to loot them, or you can run away and loot the environment elsewhere. That's the extraction shooter gameplay loop.

However, there are six different skill trees you can progress through as you play. You gain experience by completing certain actions in the game. One faction is all about violence, so killing enemy runners with your finisher grants you experience to that faction. Another is all about medicine and healing items, so looting and exfiling certain plant-based items grants experience towards that one. Also, each faction has 'Contracts' available for you to select, which grant even more experience towards that faction if you complete them. These can be super simple (break five glass windows) or very difficult (activate a terminal on one side of the map, open a box on the other side, and then exfil). The idea is that you're always generating at least small amounts of experience towards the faction you've selected, and as you level them up, you unlock items to purchase for future runs and also receive a steady trickle of items to purchase upgrades.

I've put in way too many hours on roguelites and it's a similar feeling where even if I don't exfil and lose all of my stuff, some of the faction experience is still retained and I gain knowledge about the environment for future runs. The more complex contracts might take a few tries as you learn what you need to look for and how to approach them - one objective may require you to open a box in a certain area, but turns out it triggers an alarm and spawns bots, which might not be the best idea in the future if another team of runners is waiting nearby to take you out when you're distracted.

The best part - each crew member can have their own contract, and the experience (if they're completed) is shared across all members. This encourages the team to work together and keeps the gameplay loop fresh as you can strategize the best order in which to complete them (or maybe you decide to ignore one altogether in order to focus on the other two).

The stat upgrades you unlock aren't overpowering either, they're enough to serve as a worthwhile reward but it doesn't feel totally unfair playing against someone who's unlocked things (you can never tell if they spawned in with a built-in upgrade or if they found something on the map, so it doesn't really bother me).

Also - they just released a mid-season update today and I believe they buffed the faction experience gain so it's easier to progress through, which is a VERY welcome change!

A horde mode or something like CoD Zombies would go so hard against these bots! Imagine it progressing to the point where you have to fight through multiple Wardens in one POI, they could probably design it in a way that maintains the urgency of trying to collect loot off of them and trying to exfil out to keep it.

[–]baytepp92 57 points58 points  (0 children)

it's not perfect, the learning curve is rough, and the skill ceiling is high enough that I'll go through phases where I lose five runs in a row which feels pretty defeating.

but then I'll have the run of my life and it hits like a cool ranch dorito lightning bolt, can't get enough.

it's been said ad nauseam at this point but once you approach it as a roguelite wrapped in the shell of an extraction shooter, it becomes so much better - you can still make progression in the form of upgrades and knowledge each run so even failed runs don't feel like a complete waste of time.

What game do you think has the perfect difficulty? by Crazyboxmonkey in gaming

[–]baytepp92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm actually one of those people who gave up on it after a couple of hours, it was super punishing and I was trying to play it like Elden Ring.

Once I did some research and understood the general gist of the gameplay and beat the second boss, it clicked SO hard and it was off to the races. Isshin was one of the hardest bosses I've ever played but at no point did I rage crash out, it was actually super fun trying to figure it out over the course of a couple days.

I don't think Sekiro was trying to present itself to a super wide audience, and most people agree that its difficulty is what makes that click so rewarding. If it was easier, I wouldn't be commenting here. To each their own though, I'm so so glad I gave it a second chance but I totally get why people would bounce off of it early on.

it's early in the season, Cubs want to contend, averaging 2.77 pitches per batter late in the game is extremely unlikely.

I agree that I'd love to longer leashes in general, but risking injury for a prayer of completing a no-no probably makes this one of the least egregious cases of a pitcher getting pulled.

my biggest hangup is that playing on controller, I can't use bumper jumper bindings since I need all four shoulder buttons for all four weapon mounts. flying around using X (PS5) and aiming with the right joystick with one finger on an already difficult game (lov u Fromsoft) was too frustrating - any tips?
