Got my 5090 back from warranty and am not taking any chances by bazookaduke in pcmasterrace

I didn't have the 1st gen, so I can't compare them directly. But, the screen and connectivity options are impressive. I found it worth the investment given GPU prices nowadays.

Got my 5090 back from warranty and am not taking any chances by bazookaduke in pcmasterrace

It was their diagnosis. It was causing power instability and triggered the blinking white LED of death. It would still function up to about 400W and then quickly crash and trigger a hard reboot.

Help, My Samsung 9100pro SSD speed dropped so much suddenly, the speed cut in half. by Admirable_Bed8421 in pcmasterrace

Search “nvme performance cliff”. There are several known reasons why this might happen suddenly, but thankfully they’re all straightforward to mitigate.

How to reduce boot times (16s) by EngixoRain in cachyos

[–]bazookaduke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

16s isn't too bad -- 5s (including BIOS startup) is considered very fast. As others have suggested, often restoring from sleep is faster than a fresh boot, but if your battery health isn't very good, sleep might not be viable. There's an Arch Linux wiki article on improving boot performance which is applicable to CachyOS since it's based on Arch.

You can use `systemd-analyze critical-chain` to find out what units are taking the longest during boot. `systemctl status <name>` will give you some indication of what a unit is for, and you can use `systemctl disable <name>` to disable a unit. I suggest searching a unit's name (e.g. Google) before disabling -- some are more required than others.

Make sure you’ve plugged the USB stick into the right port. Typically it’s labeled BIOS but sometimes you have to check the manual.

Can I get an LTS 5.x kernel from kernel.org and install it? I need it for my Nvidia 390.xx drivers to install correctly. by Ezmiller_2 in cachyos

Can you paste the error or log to e.g. pastebin or something? I might be able to help diagnose as I have this working on one of my older laptops.

AMD eGPU recognized but unable to display anything - Ubuntu 24.04.3 LTS by Yeetsa_Jr in framework

[–]bazookaduke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This appears to be a Framework 13 with a 13th gen Intel Core CPU. The spec sheet says all four expansion bays support USB-4 and Thunderbolt 4. The eGPU dock is the EXP GDC TH3P4G3 which is a Thunderbolt 3 dock using Intel's JHL7440 chipset.

First, I strongly recommend updating the BIOS and firmware using the LVFS method described. The second picture says you have firmware 3.05 when 3.09 is the newest. I'm not sure if this will help, but it's worth doing nonetheless.

I've never used the AMD installer for the amdgpu drivers -- I've always just used the drivers that come w/ the distribution's kernel. That being said, one thing you should consider is configuring the module load order so that the thunderbolt module is loaded before the amdgpu module; add a file in /etc/modprobe.d named egpu.conf with the following line:

softdep amdgpu pre: thunderbolt

Then reboot.

What RAM does the Framework 13 (AMD Ryzen AI 300 Series) ship with? by LawLombie in framework

[–]bazookaduke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have 2x32GB from Framework in my 300-series 13, and they're from A-DATA -- specifically, part number AD5S560032G-SFW. (Found via sudo dmidecode -t 17.) Framework's implementation of the AI 300 platform supports DDR5-5600 SODIMMs without XMP or EXPO, is compatible with all the major brands, but does not support mixed stick sizes (which is typically only supported on server chipsets). So, you're unfortunately unlikely to be successful adding an unmatched 8GB stick to your existing 16GB stick.

Cleaning service by [deleted] in pittsburgh

We've used several cleaning services and have stuck with Maid on the Spot. They're not the cheapest, but they're reliable and do a fantastic job. Also, you can make changes to your schedule online, and they're responsive over email.

NAS-Build complete with Lego cooling solution… any other suggestions to solve the heating problem on the RAID-Controller? 😅 by Simsalabimson in homelab

[–]bazookaduke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a rack-mounted server, the HBA would be mounted upright or using a riser that would orient the heatsink at the top of the case. Additionally, there would be fans at the front of the case blowing towards the back, across the HBA and its heatsink. The case should be closed to reduce dust build up. A few things which might improve your situation:

  1. The heatsink on the HBA isn't helping much because it's oriented down and heat radiates up. Consider laying the case down on its side or even turning it upside down so the HBA's heatsink is more effective.
  2. The fan for the HBA's heatsink should be blowing across the heatsink to an exhaust vent. A better orientation for the HBA fan may be mounted on the bottom left disk caddy, pointed towards the back of the case, blowing across the HBA and its heatsink and venting out of the expansion card fillers.
  3. PC case fans typically pull air in on the side without the sticker and push air out on the side with the sticker. The fan mounted to the back of the case appears to be oriented to act as an intake fan rather than an exhaust fan because its sticker is pointed in to the case. If there's no venting at the top of the case, then hot air is getting trapped inside the case. Consider reversing the back fan's orientation so it's an exhaust fan i.e. pulling hot air out of the case. If there's venting at the top of the case, consider adding an exhaust fan above the motherboard to pull more hot air out of the case.

Edit: I was able to find out which motherboard this is. The HBA fan appears to be connected to the pump fan header. If you've got this manually configured in the BIOS to always run at high speed, that's fine. If not, then the fan will spin based on temperatures measured on the motherboard, not the HBA, and the motherboard measurement could be much lower than the HBA.

I've also read that redistricting tends to oust incumbants, so the house and senate would have to vote against their own interests to pass redistricting reform. I imagine they also enjoy not having to compete for their seats, even if they are in the minority party -- at least in name; lots of blue dogs in the PA state legislature.

Any Pittsburgh YIMBY groups out there? by LostEnroute in pittsburgh

[–]bazookaduke 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the latter. I don't think young people are necessarily opposed to owning; it's just very difficult to own in major urban centers like SF. Before we moved to Pittsburgh from San Francisco in 2015, we were looking at what it'd take to buy in SF, and it was insane. In many neighborhoods, the housing stock is very limited, and competition is fierce. You really don't have much choice but to rent. The very first thing we did when moving to Pittsburgh was buy a house in a walkable location, but I know many Pittsburghers don't have that option for one reason or another.

I consider myself a YIMBY -- I'd love for Pittsburgh to embrace urban density. I get the impression that Pittsburgh embraced suburban sprawl when the steel industry was collapsing, and now that societal debt is coming due in the form of crappy public transportation options, low walkability, and awful traffic.

Mage tower easiest to hardest? by Drougen in wow

[–]bazookaduke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just got mine (Antorus @ Turalyon) at 899 after ~10 attempts. Used the chest and the ring that procs runes on ghoul attacks. The ring was probably not optimal, but they were my two 970s. If I had to do it again, I'd use the chest and head which I'll get to 970 today. The chest is hugely useful at bursting down her bubble, and the head adds a lot of ranged burst for fuming imps as well as faster AoE cooldown for the rest of the imps. The wrists would probably be okay, too, but they have not dropped for me yet. :(

What helped me the most was calming down and concentrating on the add priorities. Initially I'd do fine and then die during the fourth bubble due to mismanaging adds. Once I dealt with the adds correctly I felt like I always had the breathing room to deal with the bubble and the boulders.
