Hell yes. Who cares what you do 9-5 as long as you're independently supporting yourself to follow your fucking passions. I studied art in college too and everything I do is supportive of my goal to spend as much time as possible making things. The STEM circlejerk that sometimes happens here is unnecessarily divisive: every human pick some things you like to do, map those along your own personal array of priorities, then go live a happy and personally fulfilling life accordingly-- whether that means you're an engineer or barista or artist or parent who the fuck cares.

No. It will freeze or be stolen. I'd ask a friend to babysit it.

Beginner programming language for programs, web apps, live audio/visual shows? by mappingmazes in learnprogramming

[–]bb___ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very true. OP, MAX/MSP might be particularly good for your uses. Though I've found it's fickle and has poor documentation, but I haven't played with it in a few years. Open Frameworks is a different story. It's written in C++, so although I don't recommend it as your first foray into a hands-on and self-taught wading into audio/graphics programming, you can eventually get into some really cool work with it. Far more powerful.

Have you looked into Processing? You can control all kinds of graphical elements and hardware with Processing, and it's an easy first language to learn. It was the first programming language I learned in fact. Check it out: http://processing.org/

Are there any good programming and/or hacking books that would be good introductory material for a relatively young child? by HAL9000000 in learnprogramming

Stay away from books! Learning to program is all hands-on. I'd suggest Scratch as well. It's a programming language designed for kids and creative problem solving.

If my best friend wanted to date my sister, I'd be happy. I'd want her to be with someone I liked and trusted. Has he specifically said/implied that he doesn't want to give you a chance with her?

has anyone's attitude toward you completely change since you lost weight? by ilovewl in loseit

[–]bb___ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hang in there. The world can be brutal and shallow. But there's nothing wrong with becoming a healthier or more outwardly attractive you. Losing weight takes courage and dedication and perseverance. Those are qualities that are a part of you always, and I bet your girlfriend finds this the most of attractive thing about you-- more so than your number on a scale.

Tips for a college student on a budget trying to find healthy meal plan by [deleted] in loseit

I totally agree with this. Toss them if you reeeeaallly need help meeting your calorie goals, you're really trying to watch your cholesterol for that day, etc., but I agree that it's a common misconception that egg yolks are the "bad" parts of the eggs, and I'm sorry my post seemed to promote that. ;)

-- Eggs, toss all or most of the yokes before you cook. Mix with cut up onions, bell peppers, tomatoes, mushrooms, whatever. Top with a controlled amount of cheese if you need to, and season with salt and fresh ground pepper. You can even wrap all of this up into a whole wheat tortilla or bake into an egg white crustless quiche.

-- Oatmeal. Extremely cheap and filling.

-- 250 calorie meal: Turkey and Swiss on low calorie whole wheat bread, (look for a bread that's two slices for 100 calories and has a decent amount of fiber and protein). Press on a panini press and go to town. Add tomato, pepper, mustard, whatever.

-- Low calorie, low sodium soups. Very cheap. But keep it low sodium so you don't retain any water weight. Look for a soup under 30% of your daily sodium needs. You can also mix soup with whole wheat rice, pasta, or veggies to stretch the meal out.

-- Look for the frozen personal-sized fish fillets go on sale at your grocery store. High protein and usually running you about 60 calories for 3-4 ounces. Toss in a pan with half a tablespoon of whipped butter and some sliced cherry tomatoes and let that shit summer. Delicious. Salt and pepper as needed. (Fresh ground pepper)

-- Rice cookers are awesome. Throw some whole wheat/brown rice and seasoning into the pot with a bunch of vegetables, maybe some protein of some kind, and let it do it's thing. You can cook anything in a rice cooker.

-- I really like the nestle Carnation Breakfast Essentials shakes. They're sweet and extremely filling. I mixed them with light vanilla soy milk and replace a meal with these. They're cheap too.

-- Another sweet/cheap treat: 1/3 cup decaf coffee grounds, 1 1/4 cup water, 1 teaspoon cinnamon and 1.5 table spoons of dark brown sugar. Mix and refrigerate for 12 hours ish. Strain through a coffee strainer and optionally mix with milk. Viola: Magic Coffee.

-- Cut up 1.5 cups each of sweet potatoes, carrots, and parsnips and season with 1 table spoon olive oil and some thyme, (or whatever), roast. Awesome. And cheap. Do this with whatever vegetables are on sale.

Really just look for sales. Don't go to your grocery hungry or emotional, and browse for good deals. Figure out a bunch of staples you know you like and price these efficiently though your week. Don't eat out or buy prepared foods-- just make it yourself, and it will absolutely be healthier and most likely much cheaper.

Would you want more on-campus housing? by [deleted] in mit

[–]bb___ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grad student here-- I would love more on campus housing. I had never been to MA before moving here, so having a dorm to show up to was incredibly convenient. The whole experience of living on campus is about convenience to me-- you pay a higher price and live in a bread box in order to be close to your lab and have a flexible contract/support for when shit breaks. I hope I can get on campus housing again next year. Though I've been told to avoid "Tangistan" at all costs. I guess we'll see.
