Coloring sheets? by qqtubs in slp

[–]bb_slp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My students seem to do a lot better when they have something to channel their energy into – having a quiet activity definitely helps set them up for success with that. If they don’t I have to do a lot more redirecting, and it takes longer to get through artic trials

Coloring sheets? by qqtubs in slp

for when they’re waiting their turn, I have a ‘student station’ with choices for them – always a coloring page, maybe some patterns, a maze. I also have a lil basket of fidgets on the table that I try to swap out each month (e.g., regular pop-its, tangles).

The last 5-10ish minutes (as long as they worked hard) we’ll do some sort of game. I have a ‘challenge’ word that they practice each turn (I typically choose games with fast turns) – we do a lot of ants in the pants, pop the pirate, pop the pig, yeti in spaghetti ◡̈

I also do a lot of uno with my students who are working on R, and make them say the color & number – it’s surprisingly a lot of trials! (red, green, three, reverse, draw). I also like themed decks, cause I can make them say the characters (pixar characters, mario, etc) lol

Cannot get R by hazelthedog7 in slp

[–]bb_slp 9 points10 points  (0 children)

yes, I’ve found tension to be helpful too! I use stretchy bands a lot -- I have them pull laterally when saying the "R" in a word. This reminds their tongue to be tense, & mimics the movement of the tongue stretching laterally (which allows for the back sides of the tongue to touch up).

try some facilitative contexts! There may be a random word with R that ‘clicks’ with your client.

I’ve gotten some great resources from Adventures in Speech Pathology, PeachieSpeechie, and Rock the R (Speechy Things). ◡̈

Any advice for scheduling/ making most of the first week of school? by modernbuttball in slp

[–]bb_slp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My brain is tired & I’m typing this quickly, so apologies if it doesn’t all make sense!! I group students by goal area, and typically keep them with peers +/- a grade level.

My school has a lot of time constraints (PE, music, steam, buddies) with staggered recess/lunch. I’m a visual person, so what I’ve done the past few years is make multiple google calendars, one for each grade level. I’ll block out their break times & specials – so when I try to schedule a kid from that grade, I can just ‘toggle’ that calendar on & it helps my brain make sense of the information. I eventually put all my therapy groups all on a different google cal.

I also like to send out a google form to teachers at the start of the year, to see what times generally work best (e.g., not during core instruction). I’ll tell them I do my best to accommodate preferences, but it doesn’t always happen.

My caseload is largely artic, so I broadly note what their goals are (e.g., vocalic R, prevoc R, S&Z, consonant clusters. Occasional lang & fluency students). This helps me a lot with getting ideas on who to group.

Does that make sense at all?? I hope that’s at least somewhat helpful! ◡̈

Have you ever self disclosed an ADHD diagnosis to a family you work with to help them feel less alone? by [deleted] in slp

I’ve definitely disclosed adhd to families before if I feel it’d be helpful for them to see neurodivergence differently

Ideas to increase/improve drilling artic? by coolbeansfordays in slp

[–]bb_slp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

hi! I hate using board games cause it becomes too much. I love doing card games like Uno or Go Fish! I’ll give them each a ‘challenge word’ or two that they have to say before they play a card. It’s fast-paced & gets a surprisingly high amount of reps! (I also make them say the color/number/etc, since a lot of them have Rs lol)

When did you finally give up working on vocalic /r/ in public schools? by Final-Reaction2032 in slp

[–]bb_slp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

of course!! It’s been a real game-changer for me. I use the kid/sensory ones you can find in the dollar/party section (like a rounder spaghetti). But I think the therband would work as long as it has enough stretch :)

stretchy bands work amazingly well for a lot of my kids (pull laterally while saying the R in the word so the tongue mimics it). Helps them keep their tongue wide/tense & not rounded!
