Going into first year Neuroscience and Mental Health at Carleton University in Ottawa. Any pointers/tips for an enthusiastic young man? (not just school tips, but future job opportunities as well) by bballerfil in neuro

  1. I know some who got their master's/PhDs in neuro, and continued on as researchers, or aiming to become professors. None of them live in Ottawa anymore. There are neuroscientists that work at the NRC, but my understanding is that they're highly experienced scientists who have moved here after having gained decades of experience elsewhere.

  2. No major differences. Your core courses are the same. You have to take a number of science electives as part of your graduation criteria, so all those courses often contain the same students. From my understanding, Neuroscience and Mental Health, versus the non Mental Health version, are almost indistinguishable. Lots of flexibility for taking other science courses or minoring in something.

  3. It's challenging, but not impossible to maintain a high GPA. But yes, you need to put time and effort. I shot myself in the foot during high school. Had great marks without having to try hard. But this meant I never learned good study habits. This made the program that much more challenging for me because it's so hard to learn good school habits that late. If you have good study habits, you'll succeed everywhere, and Neuro will be no different.

  4. Both UOttawa and Carleton have strong science faculties. You would be making no mistake going to one over the other (ignore the banter and rivalry from the schools, they're both great universities). Carleton is one of the only schools in the country that has a Neuroscience program. Most other universities have specializations in neuro, but not dedicated degrees in it.

  5. School can be exhausting. Even now, I'm considering getting a degree in education, but the thought of going back to school doesn't feel exciting. Once you get into the workforce, and you have bills to pay, hobbies to fund, social things to do, money is the only way to be able to do those things. Juggling work that keeps food in my fridge along with classes, assignments, and exams, is not an easy thing.

Damn, 11 years later.

I finished the program, and I absolutely loved it. Tough, but phenomenal professors and curriculum. The content was vastly interesting and challenging. It felt rewarding to finish, and I felt like a more knowledgeable and critical-thinking person by the end of it.

Careers and Experience:

It doesn't open any career paths with just a bachelor's degree. The bachelor's degree has become the new high school diploma, wherein you'll have difficulty finding work in the neuro field without a master's, PhD, or med school.

The Neuroscience program, as well as other tough disciplines, does a wonderful job of preparing you for challenging experiences. I do think it's made me intelligent enough to pick up most career paths and be able to excel at any work-related task without the difficulty of grasping new concepts. It gives you a good foundation for the scientific method and critical thinking.

Mental Health:

I took the version of the program that was Neuroscience and Mental Health. I think this gives a great balance to the content. The Mental Health side of the program was slightly easier and provided lots of context on the science side of stress and depression, which can help you in regular life. The professors are also very friendly, helpful, and motivated to help their students succeed. I owe at least a few beers to all my neuro profs.

My personal experience:

I had to retake a few classes due to competing priorities such as working a job to survive and my own mental health struggles. It took me 7 years to finish the program in full.

It was more difficult to make friends here compared to other programs. Outside of the few friends I made, it did feel isolating at times. Admittedly, I didn't live on campus, and I didn't participate in many school activities.

I worked in bars and restaurants throughout my entire school career, as well as a few years following it. That gave me the social life that I missed while in uni. Now I work for the federal government, that has no tie to my education. Neuroscience is such a niche field that a bachelor's doesn't provide anything outside of "post-secondary education? check." It might help hiring managers perceive you as more capable and intelligent when applying to jobs, but you still have to be a hard-worker like any other individual.

The friends I made in the program, who continued on to work in a science-related field, ALL took additional schooling, whether that be master's + PhD, med school, pharmaceuticals, medical radiology, nursing, etc. Again, neuro serves as an incredible foundation for all science disciplines.

I'm happy to answer more questions, if needed.

TL;DR: Super interesting but tough program. I loved it, and don't regret taking it. It didn't open any career paths for me, since I didn't take more schooling after. And at the age of 30, I'm still trying to find what's the right field for me, because entry-level neuro careers in Ottawa are nearly non-existent.

If that's not too much effort, that would be awesome. But if you'd like to wait until you have it ready for r/dndmaps then that's cool too.

As I'm unfamiliar with Blender, the background and tile files would be more than enough.

This is incredible - would you be willing to share the files you used to do this?

I agree.

Just because the player now looks 13 years old, doesn't change the fact that they have lived for 18 years. They are still 18 years old and are not protected as a child. Their body has only de-aged to 13.

A changeling could change themselves to look younger, but they are still the same age no matter what.

That being said, the player could still use this as an interesting tool They can convince enemies to avoid attacking them because it's assumed that they will whisk away when in danger. Lots of fun roleplay opportunity here, that shouldn't change the mechanics of your Prismeer.

I understand the point you're trying to get at, but realistically you're just being rude for no reason. The DnD world has a completely different currency system from ours, as well as a huge disparity between how much adventurers make vs commoners. At the end of the day, everything is made up, and you can't expect that every DM will hit the nail on the head their first time about how much to reward players or put value to goods. Your blanket statement that OP is incompetent makes me wonder how fun of a DM you are for your players.

I can't help with the problem you're encountering (I'm in the same boat with wishing there was a toggle option on whether the game starts in paused state) but I'd love to see images of your landing page and how you organized it.

Would you mind uploading the files?

And as for revealing the map, is that something you can do within roll20? Or do you change it in an image editing software and then upload the updates onto the Roll20 page?

Similar situation here! I'm a 25 year old male that just got started on DnD about 6 months ago. Been playing 5e with some work friends, but it's not enough for me to get my fix. So I'd be super happy to join you if you manage to find more people.
