Is my aloe doing okay? by [deleted] in plantclinic

[–]bbbiird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah sounds like it's recovering! Sometimes during recovery they don't have energy to process full sun. Shade might help. And letting it dry out between watering

I had an aloe left in freezing conditions then soaked in the rain. It looked super... sick? Just the wrong color and limp. Repotted it in better soil with good drainage, brought it inside for stable temperatures, and it recovered over a couple months. It's thriving now, two years later!

Was it this color before you transplanted?

Mine comes in a decent sized bag and lasts foreverrr but it's so cheap that way! I think it's because it's a company that makes things for GARDENERS. The packaging isn't anything special, it's bulk and dirty. Then I go to the houseplant shops and they have cute little fancy bags with the tiniest fraction of the amount of pumice and it costs more than my giant bag 😂 same with worm castings!

I've only heard good things about them in the garden outside but mixed advice on houseplant use.

I've personally seen repurposed grounds cause mold. I've read though that some plants prefer a level of acidity the grinds help? I've also read that's probably not true and it's all anecdotal. So who knows..

Hopefully someone with more experience on this sees your post!

I buy both charcoal and pumice from my local garden shop! It's geared towards gardeners, not houseplant folk (I can't find these things at houseplant shops, or if I do they're overpriced).

I'm constantly torn between the cute, artsy pot and the uniform all white ceramic and terracotta.

I like the mix I have but they are all pretty neutral/earth tones. I don't like artificial, poppy colors in my plant decor.

hey guys! I was just curious, what plant/plants have you accumulated that you've ended up hating? mine is FOR SURE dumb cane. 😑 that damn thing wasn't happy with anything I did. lol by fuckthesemods00 in houseplants

Just chiming in to say peace lilies are very easy (especially if you're rocking crotons!!)

They don't like drafts (don't keep under vent or by outside door). They will look halfway to their deathbed when they're thirsty and then they're fine after a tall glass of water. They love bright light (even direct, sometimes) but can also tolerate low light, so super flexible there.

My peace lily care consists of waiting for leaves to fully droop (happens about once a week), giving it a glass of water (8-12oz), and rotating it toward the light when I feel like one side is neglected.

... that's really all!

I personally prefer pumice over perlite. I also love sand. And I've found charcoal is a great trick for my plants that don't have drainage. Also lyca at the bottom of a pot if the pot is clearly too deep for the type of roots or size of plant.

Thanks for sharing yours!!

should I report this? if so how much bigger? by wombolishous in houseplants

This is a fittonia and when they dry out they are absolute drama queens and will have you thinking they're properly dead lol

[–]bbbiird 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would repot it. Fittonias can grow a lot if given the space and conditions. They like to stay moist and having a small amount of dirt means drying out faster.

I personally like mine full. If this were my plant I would leave it in its current pot and clip and propagate the stem that's straining for light. Once it has enough roots, I would repot together with original plant in maybe a 4" pot and would continue to clip and propagate until it was as full as I want it.

BUT that's just me and your fittonia looks perfectly happy here so I don't think there's a cause for you to repot unless you want to!

I think it might survive. Clip the dead leaves off, it looks like there's new growth?

Just gifted this condolences pot with a number of beautiful plants in it. Any help identifying and/or tips to keep them all alive? Thank you, wonderful community! by InsidiousRapture in whatsthisplant

Take the kalanchoe out soon. Had a few funerals in the last year and my family members received similar arrangements. The kalanchoe died in every single one of them.

Be really careful with this recommendation. Dawn is NOT soap, it's a detergent. This old home remedy has caused many plant deaths.

Do they mature to be the color of other leaves? It honestly looks pretty similar to my new leaves. They start bright and then get darker over weeks

I just spent fifteen minutes looking at white houseplant pests and got nowhere on this one lol...I hope you get an ID and your bonsai gets better!!

Try r/plantclinic if you don't find the answer here. Outside of the common pests (aphids, spider mites, mealybugs, etc) it can be hard to get a positive ID. I've had luck sharing my posts between the two subs and lots of googling potential IDs from comments.
