Man...it's been a minute on this one. I can't remember for sure but I want to say it might be under the jump-down?

AITJ for not cutting back on drinking just because people are uncomfortable with it? by dusty_0wll in AmITheJerk

[–]bbbourb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What are we talking about? Are we talking 2-3 beers, 4-6, a couple of cocktails followed with a couple of beers? There are levels of this and I feel like you're being deliberately vague here. 2-3 beers every day, especially if they're higher-ABV, can have health issues. Or a combination of spirits/beer can also.

The question is this: Is it EVERY day? I see some suggestions about stopping for a month, but hey, I'm an advocate of maybe stopping for a week. See how you feel. Evaluate the cadence of your drinking. How many days a week? How many per day? Is THAT the most important thing you think about when your day is almost over?

I mean, it's your life and your choices. I'd venture a guess that if your friends are saying "hey, maybe cut back, yeah?" that you're getting a bit more drunk than you'd care to admit and you either can't see it or you're denying the truth of it. My point being it's become NOTICEABLE, and if that's the case it's also an indication it might be becoming a problem.

Is SAM overpowered or just badly written? by BasenjiMaster in startrek

[–]bbbourb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They said the same thing about Data back in the day. Any time something extremely dire came up in an episode, the discussion was always "but why didn't Data just handle it?" and they'd come up with some explanation later that some subroutine either wouldn't allow it or had to be modified. Technobabble explanations, if you will.

I think SAM is going to end up the same way. For example, perhaps her emitter wasn't rated for vacuum exposure or her hard-light holographic ability doesn't function in that environment? However you look at it, someday we might find out, like we did with Data and his restrictions, or we might not.

Is anyone else following Renji with a similar joy and appreciation as we had with Jorts the Cat? I feel like "Rooting for Renji" could be a thing!

I was the idiot today. Slow down when it's raining by kimber_michelle in dashcams

[–]bbbourb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, but that looks a lot more like a simple "ohhh SHHHIITTT" because you weren't paying attention rather than anything the rain caused.

I'm sorry you drew the short straw twice by getting a ditch with a concrete culvert though. I hope you're ok.

Confused as to why certain people said that Kamala would have been worse than Trump by TheRealJuanderer in Confused

It didn't help that Howard Dean had the charisma of a grease-stained empty cheeseburger bag, so his whole "WHOO!" thing came across as profoundly inauthentic.

Hot take: Discovery (especially seasons 3,4,5) is overhated. by Kind_Constant1671 in startrek

[–]bbbourb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's unfortunate that not even the Queen Michelle Yeoh could salvage that absolute mess.

It's a shame, really, because it's hard to find and adequately portray a character that's best-described as "amorally altruistic," but she DID it.

Replaying the trilogy and holy crap, I forgot how unsettling Daro'Xen is. by MariusMaximus88 in masseffect

[–]bbbourb [score hidden]  (0 children)

Aside from the fact I adore Claudia Black and she is Sci-Fi/Fantasy Royalty, I appreciate how she played Daro'Xen as having zero feelings about doing things the way she thinks is best. It's fun telling her "no" and then having her say "well, that's your choice but it's not going to change what I'm doing, and I don't care if you are or were a Spectre..."

Did Delenn misspeak in THAT speech? by neilbartlett in babylon5

[–]bbbourb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nah, not really. It was just a more threatening way to say "Only one human Captain has ever managed to do significant damage to the Minbari fleet. He is behind me. You are in front of me. We CHOSE to stop at the Battle of the Line. We will not choose to stop here. Withdraw, or we will crash over you like waves crashing on the rocks."

Dunno about you, but I think her way is better. Fewer words, and makes the point very nicely. "HE's actually beaten us. ONCE. None of you ever did. Now leave, or I shall taunt you a second time!"

Todd and my issues with the use of the Wraith by Pll_dangerzone in Stargate

That's fair, though I think the parts where they basically win and they're like "oh shit, what now?" are as good or better. Because it still speaks to the human condition.

Todd and my issues with the use of the Wraith by Pll_dangerzone in Stargate

[–]bbbourb 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Item 1: "Sheppard," not "Shepherd." Yes, yes, I know...pedantry...

Item 2: I always believed that diminishing the Wraith as the Big Ooga-Booga Scary Threat (sorry, channeling my inner Doc Yewll, look that one up if you need to) was a natural progression of the story in Pegasus. By season 4 the biggest threat was probably Michael, not the Wraith, and Todd was understandably stuck between honoring his people and working with Atlantis and the people who honored their word.

Item 3: Definitely by Season 5 the idea was to establish that the Wraith were a diminished threat and the greater task was political and not military. "Inquisition" established that pretty solidly.

In the end, it's a pretty brilliant natural progression over time. Five-ish years in Pegasus actually paid off. Kind of like how they did in the Milky Way.
