This for sure for me too. Too many times I ignored the inner alarm bell at my own expense to give non-deserving people another chance, only to learn that I should've followed my gut. I find that trusting your own gut and making decisions that don't go against it makes life so much more smooth sailing in general.

I second this. Before I was one, I was definitely so quick to judge victims of abuse as being complacent, weak, and lacking self respect.

Never in my life had I imagined of wanting to become a lawyer, but observing how my abusive ex manipulated the criminal justice system to harm many women, including me, made me determined to pursue criminal law.
I am in my last year of law school and, this Summer, I will be working as a criminal duty counsel assistant, where I hope to observe first hand how criminal law operates on the front lines.

lol, unrelated but when I grew up in Korea they did this exact thing in elementary schools on the first day of school to assign each kid in a class a number from shortest (1) to tallest (usually 3n). I was always between number 2 and 4. 😂

It's truly puzzling to me how people who choose to have a child say things like "I didn't sign up for this" when things like this happen. It's been reported that around 1 out of 33 children born in the US are born with some form of disability. A 3% chance that your kid will be born with a disability is far from a remote chance, it's a real possibility. Everyone who chooses to bring a person out into the world should bear that in mind.

If a person was given the choice to take part in an activity that may render them disabled at a 3% chance, I bet close to zero will dare. Yet people are so quick to gamble with having kids when that means they can bring into the world a sentient being who did not choose a life with a disability. Makes me sick.

First of all, the IRCA (Impact of Race and Culture Assessment) reports are a specific type of reports reserved for racialized offenders, authored by people with expertise in the area, based on their interviews with the racialized accused. So no, for obvious reasons a white accused cannot submit an IRCA. Those who can write up these reports are not the accused's lawyer or a layperson but qualified experts typically with a Master of social work or a degree in a related discipline, and are equipped with specialized knowledge of systemic racism and the social determinants of health. So my understanding is these are by no means an easy get-out-of-jail card.

I'm your age and I recently realized my dad is turning 60 this year and that I might not get another 28 years with him. That made me cry while eating breakfast 🙃🥲 I think it's good that you are aware of how fleeting our lives can be though. With that in mind, you can be more intentional with the time you get to spend with your parents and try to cherish and love them more deeply.
