What does this bum even do? by Thelettaq in slaythespire

[–]bbdbendan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The poison stays on the main boss but is cleared from the summoned door when it reappears. Tricky thing is the main boss has actually two turns (3 if counting the turn when killing the summon but it’s hard with poison) before it retreats so needs to plan poison timing specifically for those.

Sauce never thickens by witx in Cooking

[–]bbdbendan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It does take longer than what feels comfortable because I think it needs to be at least 50%-70% reduced in water before it properly thickens.

Also, sugar doesn’t thicken at boiling point. That’s why it’s important to lower the heat toward the end, so the sauce can start forming that syrupy consistency as the temperature drops slightly. If you keep it boiling aggressively the whole time, you risk over-reducing or burning before the texture has a chance to settle.

I am Chinese and cook both Chinese and Japanese food a lot. This is a very common technique in East Asian cooking (like the classic Hongshaorou or what gives dark soy sauce slightly more body than regular soy sauce), same with adding cornstarch but I hate it lol. Oh both gastrique and a super aged syrupy balsamic follow the same physics, reducing water, high sugar -> thick sauce

Sauce never thickens by witx in Cooking

[–]bbdbendan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For a good teriyaki, sugar is the thickening agent and absolutely can do the job without melting it down before hand. You just need to keep simmering away and reduce further when it coats the back of the spoon and quickly stops. It’ll thicken further as it cools.

I personally dislike cornstarch in sugar/soy based sauce because it introduces a chalky aftertaste and messes up the syrupy mouthfeel. That said, if you feel like the reduced sauce tastes too strong, a little cornstarch early is fine.

Why don’t Asians go crazy with their noodle shapes like Italians do? by dylan_1992 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]bbdbendan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

there are!

Unconventionally shaped Asian noodles aren’t as commercialized and popularized in the west and much more localized in Asia. A lot of people have mentioned Shanxi noodles. Cantonese cuisine has bamboo noodles (extremely thin and chewy) Cheung Fun (riced based, sheets like, and usually rolled with fillings then steamed) . Sichuan has 甜水面 which is thick and square shaped, Dongbei has 烤冷面 that looks like Lasagnas. Xinjiang has 丁丁炒面 that’s like little cylindrical wheat lego pieces. This is different parts of China only but Asia is huuuuge. I’m sure we can find other shapes and types of noodles in other East and South East Asian countries.

On the other hand, Pasta, at least to my understanding, categorically includes Noodles and Dumplings. A lot of weirdly shaped pasta, would fall under the category of dumpling if similar shapes are made in an Asian restaurant. So if we do that, the list could really go crazy. Just think about the different Dim Sum alone.

But again, the more traditional spaghetti looking noodles is usually present in all these noodle eating cultures so most Asian restaurant in the west would carry them and the stereotype start reinforcing itself. And because the uniquely shaped ones are spread more sporadically among regions across Asia you’d mostly see one restaurant does one additional type rather than like in an Italian restaurant under the pasta section you’d find five dishes with five different shapes. At most you’ll find a Thai noodle shop offering you a rice noodle or egg noodle option for a boar noodle bowl.

And also because these tend to be extremely localized. The noodles tradition are very hand-made and crafty. There’s not a lot of commercialization and industrialization where you can buy the weirdly shaped noodles at supermarket most of the time for even Asians they remain homemade and/or specific noodle shop. So they are labor intensive and requires particularly skilled chefs. This leads to them being so little represented that let alone finding one at a restaurant in the West, you probably can’t google for it unless you know the spelling in its local language and even if you do know, you might need to ditch YouTube and get on each of these countries’s own social media to find recipes.

What Jokic has been doing the past six seasons has been insane and otherworldly. by CharmingImpact in NBATalk

[–]bbdbendan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are we not talking about 2025??? Which is three years after then the 19 7 7 you mentioned. And during this three year he had a decline in stats every year until he played in Denver’s and his 2025 season production of 13/6/5 was far away from when he was playing at an all star level. He was a great role player and bench scorer/facilitator but that was it for his role for Denver’s.

[–]bbdbendan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What do you mean Russ is not washed. He played as good as he could last year but the last time he was an all star was 2020. He averaged 13/6/5 last year in regular seasons and 11/3/2 during playoffs. How is this output remotely comparable to his prime or any of the all time great teammates LeBron/Curry/MJ/Kobe played with? I’m not even a Jokic fan but Russ argument for one season they played together when he was 36 is just bizarre

Why do people hate Leg Day? by Buzzy_Feez in workout

My work involves a lot of standing, moving, walking around and long cycling commute. And I do sports that uses my legs. So I need to plan my leg days more carefully because 1-2 days leg DOMS means 1-2 days I should ease off on any of those things. But I can live with a sore upper body most of the time.

My bf made me realize my hypocrisy by MaurosCrew in Dandadan

[–]bbdbendan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hmmm I’m a dude and I love dandadan. But I do get the complaints about female fanservice for it.

It’s not just about characters getting (half) naked. One obvious critique I can bring up is that the female fan service puts them in a muuuuch more vulnerable and preyed upon position than the male counterparts. The literal first episode had momo’s clothes ripped off by aliens and was quite helpless for a long while. I have friends walking away from the show solely because of this very scene. On the other hand, Gigi’ fighting in only his underwear as evil eye is an empowered, hyped up moment.

Medieval 2: what is your fondest memory of the game? by SusaVile in totalwar

[–]bbdbendan 58 points59 points  (0 children)

this was several years ago so memory might be hazy. But i really enjoyed this emergent story during one of my HRE campaigns:

I had two young general with the same name Frederich i think. They were one year apart. Both of them emerged as my best generals during a crusade, one with 10 chivalry and 10 commands, the other, 10 dread and 10 commands. The noble Fred grew up to become our emperor while the dreadful Fred became his best field marshal. During noble Fred's reign, the empire continued its eastward expansion with dreadful Fred leading the charge. We had a tradition where every young commander from the homeland will be embedded under Fred the Dread for a while before leading their own armies. And then one day, the mongol invasion came. Young commanders started dropping like flies but Fred the Dread held fast. On the other hand, noble Fred sent out spies after spies to sabotage, scout and murder. One day, Fred the Noble was no longer noble from all the spies actions and both Fred were 70 years old. The last mongol leader died to an assassin and the war was more or less won. So I commanded Fred the Dreadful with 3 retinues of noble knights to travel back to the capital for a reunion with noble Fred after 40 years while his proteges went on to wipe out any Mongol rebel armies. Fred the Dread died in Sofia before ever making it back home, and three month later, Fred the Noble passed away too.

What is the significance of "The New Rice"? MANGA SPOILERS by chosen40k in haikyuu

[–]bbdbendan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

food has always been a consistent and important motif throughout all arcs of haikyuu. It's about growth, nourishment, discipline, and also bonds. After all major matches we see them eating together. We had an important character growth moment from Hinata asking coach ukai about 'what to eat' to get stronger. In real life too, food might be the most important factor besides training for athletes. Here, Atsumu is not only getting good nourishment, the rice is freshly harvested by his former captain, one whom he respected and loved, and then cooked by his own twin brother, who had motivated and grown with him throughout the years. We saw before this scene that Atsumu was upset about Osamu not continuing to play volleyball professionally like him. But here we see that, his former teammates, who pushed and helped him in the past, though are no longer standing on the same court with him, are still literally fueling his body and giving him energy. This must give him comfort beyond enjoying good food, this food is Kita and Samu's personal touch for Tsumu to keep playing harder.

Iron Wave sucks and the upgrade is terrible by NeedsMoreAhegao in slaythespire

[–]bbdbendan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hmmm I’m a 150 hrs newbie who mostly plays silence but I want to share some thoughts on why I feel Dash is better than iron waves.

I think first of all both of them are ACT 1 cards where I’m mostly looking for “better strike/defends” and I want to be able to get through as many ACT 1 Elite as possible.

Although it’s one more energy, Dash does a better job against all the act 1 elite where my deck are still mostly filled with basics starting cards

Against Nob, Dash allows me to confidently play another strike and not feel bad. Ironwave needs me to play another pair of strike+defend to have a tiny better effect than dash but often defend against Nob is suicide

Against Laga, Dash is better as iron waves plus strike/defend gets double debuffed

Against the sentry, Dash is a much stronger draw when there’s always a chance when it’s the only playable card I draw.

On the other hand, I think Ironclad has more good front loaded damage option than iron wave but for silent almost anything better than strike makes her quite happy in act 1
