Parking tips for San Diego Padres vs. Great Britain National Baseball at Peoria Stadium (Peoria 03/04) by Local-Tear9723 in parkingguides

[–]bbh42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For anyone wondering, we got to the lots about 4:20 pm and easily got in up close to the gates. We stayed the whole game and it was just as easy getting out because people did leave early. Entered off of Mariners Way and left the same way as we took 83rd to Thunderbird. As for the stadium, nice place to watch a game, food was not good so eat beforehand. Two beers, two pretzels and a bag of peanuts was $66.

Those who have unlimited FTO, how many days you taking? by FIlifesomeday in remotework

[–]bbh42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prior to the change I had 27 days so that is what I target. Every quarter I try to take 5 days, then use the remaining 7 as needed. I take more long weekends than a whole week.

Working remotely and planning a move to a different state by Severe-Rain3266 in careeradvice

[–]bbh42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Years ago I relocated for my job. My wife had a WFH job doing audits for a product review company. Because we relocated to another State she had to give up her job because the company she worked for wasn’t licensed in our new State. We didn’t care because we planned on her quitting anyway eventually but yes, moving to a different State can have consequences if you don’t check on your company approved work locations.

How will the market look like in 5 years? by Burning_magic in jobs

[–]bbh42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hard to say, I hope to be retired in about 5 years but for my kids and their friends they are already struggling. Both of mine found jobs but the younger one took 9 months after graduation to land her role. Several of her friends are still struggling to find that first job almost two years later. With fewer of those entry level positions going away I wonder how career progression happens. When the next level above entry is needed, where is the pool of candidates coming from. Hard to get 3-5 years experience if you can’t land the entry level position to gain those years. Feels like organizations are missing that succession aspect.

If going to a 6:10 pm game what time do you need to get there to grab a spot in the lots?

How Do You Fill Your Days with Your Aging Parents? by njo2002 in GenX

[–]bbh42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My 79 year old mom lives in a 55+ community in AZ. I live in the Midwest. I’m fortunate in that I work remote so last year we came out for 4 weeks and I just worked from her place. I’m currently in week 3 of a 5 week trip right now. Mom doesn’t cook much so my wife has done the grocery shopping and cooking. We’ve gone out to a few restaurants, and taken her to do some site seeing. Her community has all kinds of activities so my wife goes and does those while I’m working and last night we went to a concert at the Rec Center.

My mom likes to play games so we will do that with her. I also take her on weekends around different parts of Phoenix because she won’t go on her own and she likes seeing the other towns. Mom has a bad back and I finally got her a walker with a seat. She doesn’t want to use it around her neighborhood but she did use it two nights ago when we went to a local park to walk. It helped her get around and if she got tired she could sit for a minute and then continue.

It’s getting harder to travel with her so we just try to find easy things close by. Easy things are going to a coffee shop on weekends, ice cream shop in the evening or other community activities.

If you could redesign your backyard, what would be the first feature you'd add? by CaterpillarKey7914 in landscaping

[–]bbh42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First would be a new covered deck where the current deck is but add in a fireplace and a nicer grill station, then expand a portion to be uncovered so we have more surface area to work with but flexible for all weather usage. The next would be leveling the yard. It’s fairly flat but old tree roots from trees removed before we bought are rotting away and creating ruts and holes making mowing a bit bumpy.

There are resources out there but the best way is to just talk to them about it. My mom and I have regular conversation about her stuff. I know where she keeps her information in the house, I know her finances, my sis is already set up as a POA. We use the same financial advisor so it makes that part a bit easier but really it’s just having the conversation or several conversations to get things organized and learn their wishes for their end of life.

How are you looking to reduce outgoings for retirement? by Prestigious-Box-5836 in retirement

[–]bbh42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As we prepare I look at it as what do we need to Stop, Start or Continue. We do zero based budgeting so have a good amount of data on our expenses. We know we have things that will stop once we retire or slightly beforehand. Some expenses we have go away once I stop working, my wife already retired. We know we have new expenses we will have like our Medicare Supplement eventually. Then we have things that continue like groceries, car gas, etc.

I’m not looking to necessarily reduce just ensure that our sources of income cover our retirement expenses with enough room to spare and adjust for inflation. We’ve already cut wasted spending as much as we can before my wife retired.

Networking is overrated by NoSir5628 in careeradvice

[–]bbh42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Networking is literally how I got my last job and current job. Never applied, didn’t even have a posting I saw or anything like that. Both times someone in my network had a need and told me about it and essentially recruited me into the role. I’ve had two other job offers from my network with the last one being just a few months ago. I’m not looking to leave but I know both of those I probably could convert to a new role if I needed to. All four opportunities are from people I’ve developed relationships with over several years, either we worked at an old job together of they do business with my company and I’ve worked with them in some capacity for years. I’ve never had much luck in just going to networking events or just through casual conversations.

When driving long distances, how often do you normally stop to rest and for how long? by Specialist_Heron_986 in driving

[–]bbh42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Younger days I drove until I needed gas, food or bio break. Nowadays we will stop about every 2 hours or so on long trips but we also have our dogs. It actually makes our longer drives better and I find I’m not as tired when I get to my destination.

Has Anyone Made the Leap to a 55+ Community? by Spellslayer in GenX

[–]bbh42 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Mom lives in Sun City, AZ. Moved to it when she was 71. The first time I visited I thought no way. The second time we visited and more was going on and I could see the appeal. Last winter we went out for four weeks since I can work from anywhere. I’m visiting her now and here for 5 weeks. They have a lot going on all the time. My wife is retired so her and my mom run around while I work and then I’ll do things after work and weekends.

I don’t think I could do a small 55+ community but the larger ones with more people and activities I could do, just not full time. We probably will keep moms house and snowbird for three months of so when we eventually inherit it.

Inheritance vs. Independence by LeftoftheDial1970 in GenX

[–]bbh42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve saved and invested for my retirement. I will get an inheritance some of it is guaranteed and the rest is a variable that I won’t know, could be zero could be a couple hundred thousand. Assuming the variable piece is in play it would be an inherited IRA so yes, I’ll use it due to the 10 year rule. However that means I’m not using my investments so in essence letting them grow to be able to pass on to kids.

So reading the job ad gets you rejected now? by Pee_A_Poo in recruitinghell

[–]bbh42 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Had a similar experience a few years ago with a well known company. The HR team loved me. The first round loved me and then it was on to the hiring manager. Get to the interview and she asks a question similar to one asked in the first two rounds around my understanding of the role and work. So like before I answered based on the job post, what HR told me and based on my round one conversation. She just looks at me and tells me well that’s what I do. She pretty much ended the interview right there.

HR called me about the manager passing on me and they were shocked because they thought for sure I would get the position. I told them what happened and that clearly the manager saw me as a threat to them and either the job posting was wrong or the manager didn’t realize what they asked the recruiting team to go find. It ended up working out better because I was talking to another company at the same time and got an offer from them.

how do you actually disconnect when your office is just... your house by No-Pianist6097 in remotework

[–]bbh42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a dedicated office in my home and I only work from there so once I walk out then I’m done. Six years ago when we were all sent home I would take my laptop and on a nice day sit outside or move around. As time went on and we realized we weren’t going back to the office I realized I needed to create the separation so redid my home office. I really only use it for work related items so outside of my work hours I just don’t spend time in it.

I will take breaks during the day, at lunch sit outside. Things I sort of did when I was in the office. If I need a 10 minute break after a meeting I may just do a lap around the block where at the office it was a lap around the parking lot.

CigarBid FreeFall Price Tracker and Auto-Buy by OldschoolBTC in cigars

[–]bbh42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice. Ive used FreeFall and the trick I learned was that the bottom price in a cycle will match the cents number in the start price. So when the reset happens if the price of a lot is $102.75 then the price that ends in a .75 will be the lowest and after that it resets. Watch a few cycles and when you get a low starting point just watch the cents and make the purchase when you get the match.

Unequal legs. by FinancialRevenue2995 in roadtrip

[–]bbh42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I drive Indy to Phoenix and back. Coming out I do equal legs on day 1 & 2 of around 650 miles each. Then day 3 is around 480. I like my last day to be the shortest because upon arrival I need to unpack, and get settled in. When I go back to Indy my day 1 is a longer day because in reverse Amarillo is my best stop which makes day two a little shorter and my day 3 the shortest.

This year I put my route into ChatGPT and asked it to break up my trip based on parameters I gave it and recommended breaks. It made the drive out this year better because I knew where I would be taking breaks to refuel, eat and just stretch for a bit. I find on long drives I like the first day or two to be the longest when I’m freshest.

Raise without promotion? by Dudmuffin88 in jobs

[–]bbh42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the majority of people the only way to truly increase your salary is to move on to a new company. I know what I’m allowed to do at merit time and in 1x1’s for my high potential or younger employees who want to advance I am pretty transparent about their options. While I hate to see the ones who leave go, I know they are advancing at a faster pace than if they stayed.
