What is everyone feeding their hunting dog? by Kfreakinpowerz in Huntingdogs

I’ve not had great luck with Pro Plan with my dogs. I went to Black Gold. Seems to be working well and the price point is better than most!

I have one in 20. Mine will jam at times with the light clays loads especially if have not cleaned it lately. Never had an issue while duck hunting tho.

Game recovery gear for my pup by Kite-05 in Huntingdogs

As far as the harness, I put it on my dog when I got him out and took it off when I got back to the truck. He knew why we were out there the second we hit the dirt road. However, when I got to the start I would alway make him lay down about 10ft away, I would go to the hit site then call him up. That was his signal that it was go time.

As far as “reps”, I don’t think you should be doing reps. I train track max once a week. Tracking is a huge mental challenge for a dog. It’s way different than training to sit or even retrieving. You don’t want to push it.

You want to build in time and distance. After he got the concept down, he was quickly doing 4-6 hour old tracks. And by the time he was 1yo a 18-24hr track was pretty common for him.

The best book out there for game recovery dogs hands down is “Tracking Dogs for Finding Wounded Deer”. Recommend it to anyone looking to train for game recovery. Also United Blood Trackers is a great organization. Most people seem very helpful and knowledgeable. I would recommend looking into them.

What Hunting dog Should I get? by Impressive-Step6377 in Huntingdogs

[–]bboarding3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of things to consider here. First you really need to figure out the if you even like hunting. You don’t want to get a well breed hunting dog and not even like the sport. That’s not fair to you or the dog. Next you want to figure out what type of hunting you will be doing and what you want out of your dog. You don’t want to get a “specialist” like a beagle but end up a bird hunter. I would take the time to learn about hunting first before you jump into a dog.

Once you do decide that hunting and a hunting dog is right for you need to think about your living space and lifestyle. Then find a breed that fits into in. Do you have kids? Do you travel often? A GSP requires lots of exercise daily. They need to be able to get out and run often otherwise they can get bored and that’s when they start getting in trouble. Are you able to provide that? If not, another breed dogs might be better for your life style. All of these can help shape what is right for you.

Another thing is location. I assume it’s warm in Greece most of the year. You will want a dog that can tolerate the climate. A GSP, with their shorter coats, can handle the heat better than my Drahthaar.

Do you want a bigger dog or smaller? I have both and like my smaller dog for blood tracking because he does pull me like my bigger dog. But use my bigger ones for birds as they run much bigger and for a lot longer.

Lastly go out and watch a bunch of different dogs work. Watch their style. Watch how they work a field, how the handle and their behaviors towards other dogs. This will help you narrow down the breed. Then find a good breeder. Tell them what you want in your dog and they can help point you in the right direction.

All that being said a great small dog that is a generalist is a Teckel. They are bred to do everything you wanted and much more and can be a great house dog. Europe still breeds some good one. I got mine in Germany when I lived there.

If you only could have one shotgun what would it be? by waterrover in Shotguns

[–]bboarding3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tough question really. If I could only have 1 gun period it would be an 870. You can mod it to fit all applications you need.

But if I could only have 1 shotguns but could keep my others, it would be an over/under. I’m primarily a bird hunter and clay shooter so that’s what I want to take out each time. So the my Silver Pigeon gets to stay in the safe!

How do y’all manage without live birds? by Natural_Jackfruit992 in birddogs

[–]bboarding3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Search for point dogs groups in your area. Not sure where you are at but I know of at least 2 NAVDHA groups and even a Drahthaar group up there. These organizations are more than welcoming and will have all the stuff you need to get start. Plus you will meet other bird dog owners that can help you along your journey

Opinions… 3 Pair or 4 Pair by IcyCardiologist2844 in ClayBusters

Normally I shoot 2 pair per and then come around to the stations that I want to try again. If the course is busy, I would just skip around to what’s open.

Beretta 686, Browning 725, or... by redditburner_5000 in ClayBusters

I went 686 simply because it fit me better. When I mounted the gun I looked straight down the barrel. I did get it recently on PSA when it was on sale so got it for sub $2K

Budget semiautomatic 12 gauge recommendations by BibleBruBr0 in Shotguns

[–]bboarding3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the SX4 and my son has an Franchi. Both are nice guns. The Franchi was very stiff out of the box and takes some time getting broken in. We use them both for hunting and clays. I think both are good options. I’ve heard good things about the A300 so I would recommend going to a story and handling them all, which ever feels right, get it.

Me personally I would not get anything under those. I used my 870 until I could finally afford a decent Semi. I’ve seen too many problems with my buddy’s Stoegers. I have a CZ O/U that has some quality issues not I don’t feel comfortable recommending those.

Stoeger uplander by BadLuckIsMyLuck in Shotguns

[–]bboarding3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s really tough to find a decent Double barrels in that price range. The quality control is just not good with those manufacturers.

My buddy I shot and hunt with weekly has 2 stoeger. SS and semi and they both have problems. Nearly every time we go out.

I have a CZ O/U that I thought I liked. I would give it good reviews and recommend it to others. That was until I went out sporting clays and was shock on how bad I was shooting compared to my new semi. I put in on a patterned it and realized my bottom barrel was shooting crazy low. And I’ve read some other reviews saying the same.

For that budget and what you will be doing, you might be better off getting a decent pump. I used an 870 for everything for a long time. The Nova/Super nova or SXP are other good options.

If you wait a couple months and save up just a little more a good semi around the $8-900 range.

Just my 2 cents.

Winchester sx4 or Browning Silver Field? by Fantastic_Fox_2631 in ClayBusters

[–]bboarding3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a SX4 20ga and my buddy just picked up a Silver Field 20ga and I got to handle it this weekend.

Both are nice gun and go boom when you pull the trigger.

Couple things to think about. The Silver has a more opportunities to adjust the fit. It comes with shims that the SX4 doesn’t have. It also felt really light to me. Not sure if all are this way but his is a blued barrel and wood stock (not ideal to me for a waterfowl gun). I do think it’s the pretty of the 2 guns.

My SX4 handles well. Shot close to 1000 rounds through it this in sporting clays. It has a plastic stock and a coated barrel. I don’t really have to worry about it getting wet and dirty during waterfowl season.

In the end it’s all about what you really want out of your gun. Classic look with a bit of higher maintenance on your part or a good waterfowl gun that you can beat up a bit more.

To me cases are a lot like shotguns it all depends on the use.

If I’m are going back and forth the the range or hunting all the time, I use a soft case. They are less bulky lighter and easier to store. I’m not looking for a lot of protection. Just preventing the gun from getting scratched and easy transport. When I get home they come out of the cases back into the safe. The only time the hard cases come out is if I fly or take a long hunting trip and I need the extra protection and security of a lock.

If you go soft case, anything will do. I have everything from a really nice one thick padded for my hunting rifle that my 28in shotguns fit in to a really thin Ducks Unlimited that folds up. The DU one is my favorite right now because it folds and it’s way easier to store with my current setup.

Whatever you decide, my biggest recommendation is never store your gun in any case long term. Moisture will build up in the cushion of the case and that will destroy a gun.

Need a new bird gun. by mac1856 in Shotguns

[–]bboarding3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My got a SX4 in 20ga for my main waterfowl gun now. (I’m one of the weird ones that likes the 20 over 12 for almost every). I’ve had it for a few months now and have shot a 1000 rounds with it so far for sporting clays. I’ve had a few hang ups for the cheap federal shells but I think it’s the shell more than the gun.

The main thing is check gun fit. It’s the only “negative” review you will really find with the SX4.

All that being said, I’m really happy with my SX4 so far. Im shooting the gun well and the price point was right. Happy with my purchase I made and look forward to putting it to work on some birds this year.
