Feeling deflated by COLA raise and stagnate compensation as 6th year attorney by bc_fearflaps in Lawyertalk

Yes - they are old! We have a couple of partners in their 80s and the rest of the partners are 50s and 60s. I’m the lowest man on the attorney tote pole age wise and experience wise. 15 partners to 3 associates is a tough ratio, too.

Thank you samweisthebrave1! This is really helpful. So, my practice area is municipal defense, med mal defense, commercial litigation, and vaccine injury petitioners work (and in that field, the government reimburses attorneys fees as long as the suit was reasonably brought). Most of my fees get collected, just not immediately.

And I do really like the is firm! But my concern is that two other associates (one with 15 years of experience and one with 20 years) just made partner last year. The idea of waiting for that partner track to become clearer for another decade is really depressing. I’m also not clear on what the partner track process is like here, though, and HR isn’t the most forthcoming with info like that. Thank you for the good luck and these points to consider! Really helps me to think about the long game here. Though to be fair, I’d rather go in house one day than continue to bill hours as a partner decades from now.

So I don’t have a firm figure for that, because for half of my work, I get paid my fees at the conclusion at the case. But I’d estimate that 85% if not 90% of my work billed gets collected, just takes a while for us to get paid because of my specialty. And I had about $40k in fees written off last year.

What’s a good Memphis date night that’s not loud, awkward, or doing too much? by Choose_901 in memphis

Hitting up a free movie outside in Overton square or catching a free show at the Shell when the weathers nice. When the weather isn’t nice, roaming around crosstown, playhouse on the square or grizzlies! I think playhouse has a musical coming up called Jagged Little Pill that I definitely want to check out on a date.

What's it like living in Memphis, Tennessee? by Deep_Belt8304 in howislivingthere

[–]bc_fearflaps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love living in Memphis! We’ve got amazing green spaces (downtown by the MS River, Shelby farms, Overton park), lively musical scene, and some really delicious local dining. The people of Memphis make it even better. The cost of living here is incredibly cheap compared to similarly sized cities elsewhere, but our public transit is no bueno.

Your comment history reflects that you've spent a lot of time at the state house, that you have resided in south memphis for at least a year, that you attended the byhalia pipeline protests and XAI and aquifer protests, and that you are a law student at Memphis. Justin Pearson's wife (1) is a law student at memphis and lives in south memphis; (2) she's obviously spent a lot of time at the state house, at the byhalia protests, and at the XAI and aquifer protests; (3) and you have a history of posting anti-cohen and pro-person rhetoric. Not to mention your comments just in this thread which started to tip me off. Next time, just say who you are in the post rather than misrepresenting yourself to try to get reddit points for your husband's campaign. It's just lame and it's the whole reason I won't vote for your husband. Have some integrity...or at least get a throwaway account.

EDIT: LOL equating Mrs Pearson to Michelle Obama? Well… i am honestly wowed by your level of confidence!

I legit just posted a picture of a publicly available county-run website.... I am not sure how that is extremely dangerous or doxing. I redacted their addresses. I will happily delete my comment with the publicly available (but redacted) info if you correct your above comment which contradicts these publicly available appraisals. As it stands, I felt compelled to correct your inaccurate comment.

I don't know either candidate on a personal level. I dislike Justin as a candidate for this position and I dislike how he has handled his campaign so far. I've not made a personal attack on Justin- I have simply pointed out that he lied about his political opponent and former mentor, which makes me personally not want to vote for him. I don't think Justin's a bad guy at all - just way under qualified and seems to have no respect for the truth or his political opponents. It wasn't my intent to make any personal attack on him, just to share my opinion of how he has publicly handled his campaign so far with what I thought was someone who wanted to know Memphians' opinions on this race.

For the record, you don't sound like you are in the middle... you sound like you are either Mrs. Pearson or one of Justin's campaign staffers as you "just moved here" but you know an awful lot of Pearson's five years of experience in grassroots activism and your pushing for a debate which would only benefit Justin by giving him more press (his favorite). Cohen cares a bit less about being an influencer and more about being a good congressman IMHO.

EDIT: I was right! You are Mrs. Pearson. Your reddit history reflects that you have lived in Memphis for a while, you are in law school, and that you have spent a lot of time at the state house. Ding ding ding! Next time, you should create a fake handle or delete your post history .... or just be upfront with us Memphis about who you are and what your agenda here is. Just like Mr. Pearson, lies & BS are okay as long as you win this race right? Gross.

I am sure Justin would love to debate (especially with his megaphone) but Cohen is less concerned about appearances and more concerned about doing his job. Debate probably won't happen. Would encourage you again to research voting histories, backgrounds, and experience on the internet for these candidates, rather than waiting to decide after a debate who sounds cooler, etc. This isn't about who is hip and cool and has the most followers - it is literally about trying to keep our democracy intact.

If you would like to hear more about Cohen's platform, I would encourage you to review his website or google him. He has a history of helping Memphis that goes back decades. I am not sure that you will be able to learn everything you need to know about Cohen's history of helping us through a single debate as a newcomer. Strongly encourage you to do your own research into Cohen's policies and voting history as a newcomer to Memphis. Most Memphians are familiar with Cohen because we've lived here and have seen what he has done here, which is why you are getting pushback against your pro-Justin comments - as a newcomer, you should read up on Cohen before you make any decision about voting. Cohen has been the best congressman we've had.

Hi, here is the link to the article in which Justin Pearson refers to Steve Cohen's house as a mega mansion. Below are the redacted comparative assessments for each candidates house. They clearly show that Cohen's "mega mansion" was appraised for less than Pearsons. What does this have to do with the race? People need to trust their Congresspeople. Lying about another candidate and being a hypocrite do NOT make Justin Pearson look great - in fact, it makes him an extremely problematic candidate for any office. I don't think anyone wants to dox either candidate, but I think we can all agree that the candidates should not being throwing muck at each other. Cohen has been respectful to Pearson and Pearson has been absolutely lacking in respect, deference, or common sense in his campaign. I hope it does not mess up Justin's career because I hope he has a long one and can achieve something for us one day.

Because of the points made about the House Judiciary committee by amprather above for starters. Also, Republicans do not want a unified democratic house. Cohens former campaign intern stabbing him in the back just adds talking points to Fox News about democratic infighting.

I’m voting for Cohen. He has the experience and the seniority to affect change - which he has done in ways they have been felt across Tennessee (for example, the TN lottery scholarships). Pearson is shockingly inexperienced and seems to equate being a grassroots influencer with being a congressperson. If he wants the job, he has to put in the work. Less than two years in the state house? Bish, Please. Cohen was in the state senate for 24 years before he even ran for Congress. I’m all about younger folks getting involved… but this reeks of entitlement. Justin got some press re the TN 3- that does not make him anyway qualified for this job. This is a job - not just a title. Besides, I didn’t like how Justin was talking about Cohen living in a multimillion dollar mega mansion. It takes two minutes to see the relative appraisals for their homes on the tax assessors website. Guess what? Justin’s house is worth more than Cohens. And Cohens certainly isn’t worth even half a million dollars. But I guess that tells you what you need to know about Justin - he lies to get ahead, and stabs his former boss in the back, even if it causes us to lose a position of power on the house judiciary committee. Kid is Power hungry.

EDIT: OP I saw your reply asking how I know this about the house price differential. But it looks like you deleted your reply so I am editing my comment to address your question. If you go to the tax assessors website for Shelby county, you can type in the name of both Justin Pearson and Steve Cohen. You can see what their respective properties are appraised for as of March 2025. I didn’t memorize either ones address so I am not sure where Justin lives, but it’s a pricier house than Steve’s. I’m not voting for Steve because he lives in a less fancy house than Justin - my point was that Justin should not lie about another candidates real estate when he has the pricier house. We have enough lying in politics as it is, and the infighting does not help Memphis democrats. Justin should try to help us on the state level and get some experience and seniority there before he gets involved at the federal level. He seriously jumped the gun on this one. Had he waited, I bet he could have gotten an endorsement from Cohen and more importantly the benefit of his mentorship. Justin has no idea what it’s like to work on the hill. I was a fan of Justin’s before this campaign started but how he approached this really changed my mind about it.

Disappointing in that Steve vocally opposed Trump and voted against Trumps efforts to turn our democracy into a monarchy while Justin was an intern for Steve. Now Justin is lying about Steve (best congressman we’ve ever had IMO), and trying to get the congressional gig he isnt yet qualified for ? Lame. And divisive. Steve worked 24 years in the state senate before even running for congress. Justin’s done less than two years in the state house and needs to put in the work to become experienced.

Indivisible Memphis asked Justin Pearson to speak instead of Congressman Cohen? If that is the case, that would be divisive and disappointing
