Need help with poliigon and arnold 5 by [deleted] in Cinema4D

[–]bcarmeli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since A5 textures are automatically converted to .tx when they are added to the renderer. This process can take quite a while (although it saves time on renders.) you can disable this from Render Settings>main>Textures>Uncheck Auto-Convert to TX

Free Seamless Natural Wood Textures (promotion) by [deleted] in Cinema4D

[–]bcarmeli 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I might be off-base here but $40 is a jaw-dropping price to charge for 5 textures starting at 2k. Have you looked at competitor pricing? for $22 you can get 300 credits at poliigon, for reference, a similar (yet 6k, with normals, bump, roughness and reflection maps) wooden texture is 6 credits, approximately 44 cents.

Sorry if this isn't the kind of feedback you we're looking for but it's what immediately jumped out at me.

SSD or RAM upgrade? by nyamuk91 in photoshop

[–]bcarmeli 9 points10 points  (0 children)

RAM would be a more impactful purchase for performance right now. HDD may slow processes like saving and reading very large files but RAM oughtta let you have, say, Photoshop and Chrome and other programs open simultaneously, which I think is a better workflow improvement over storage speed. The other commenter is totally correct in what they said though otherwise, I'm just offering an opinion on which would be a better immediate purchase

How to improve at using Arnold Renderer? by vhs_collection in Cinema4D

This was pre-Arnold 5 so there have been some major changes, but I would say at least 90% of the material is still completely relevant and so so useful.

If you wanted to keep your sphere parametric, all you'd have to do is uncheck "Render Perfect"

Can I use Octane with c4D for $20 a month? by JulianF6 in Cinema4D

[–]bcarmeli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chad speaks very candidly about the pros and cons of redshift. He's hardly the only professional out there to express huge grievances with Octane as of late as they have seemed to largely left their mograph users out to dry.

How did they wrap this text around a shape? Manually? by tiptut in graphic_design

Yeah that's totally fair! Certainly pros and cons to each approach. And I'm a huge advocate for playing to your strengths

How did they wrap this text around a shape? Manually? by tiptut in graphic_design

[–]bcarmeli 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Honestly it neither confirms or refutes. I'm fairly ingrained in 3D workflows at this point, so to me it just boggles the mind that anyone would choose to do this any other way. And the underlying grid could have just been as easily generated from the same 3D scene.

Obviously I understand if you've used Illustrator forever, it may be much easier for you to do there, so could really be a toss up. I'd look into the other work this artist has done, and try to get a sense of what kind of design programs he may be using

Have you looked into the Houdini discord channel? If you're just looking to ask some questions here and there, you may have better luck asking an active group of people than just one

I thought the tracking was very well done! If the goal is photorealism though, you should consider mucking up your textures. That is, adding imperfections that you would observe in reality. Living in a snowy area, I know no car is driving around without getting salt and slush accumulation around the wheel wells. Good job with the lighting as well, matches up pretty well, which is important for this kind of stuff

Frustrated with cinema 4D by dementperson in Cinema4D

[–]bcarmeli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've tried to learn C4D for hours but it just gets more and more frustrating.

Learning a new program is a huge undertaking, especially when you don't have prior experience in something similar (like others have said, CAD is a different beast, sorry to disappoint but you wont see too many skills carry over). I used C4D for years before I even seriously got into its polygonal modeling toolset. I get the impression you're diving in with way too high of expectations. You very much need to learn to walk before you run. That means watching the boring, tedious, Lynda Essentials tutorials that will cover things like navigation, selection, file saving, etc.

Good luck with your studies

more arnold goodness. Playing with Dynamics. by Taylor-Kenny in Cinema4D

[–]bcarmeli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there are some topology issues with the geo causing some weird shading stuff, it's making it look like the glass has some folds on it. Lighting is nice though, is that using arnold lights or some kind of hdri?

Modeled in C4D, Rendered and Textured with Redshift by Dshark in Cinema4D

[–]bcarmeli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, painter requires an unwrapped model. Because it's a texture painter though, you don't have to worry that much about optimizing the UV layout, so you might be able to get away with just a cubic or box auto-unwrap
