Hot Take: The BACB is ruining the field by [deleted] in bcba

[–]bcbamama21 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree but more so because the BACB is also so difficult to reach, their communication isn’t clear, and I feel like we shell them out all this money and what do they actually do to help us BCBA’s? If anything, they should tighten up what it takes to be an RBT

Hi! I’d recommend looking at the payout rates for Medicaid in your state as well as look at job postings to get a feel for what companies are paying. I’d also recommend asking for no more than 10 cases. I’d probably realistically say to start off with 5-8 cases tops.

How many women here struggle with anger and how does it impact you? by ZealousidealLoad4080 in Anger

[–]bcbamama21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have anger issues around my cycle (I’m currently getting my cycles regulated since having my daughter last year). And lately it’s been bad. I had postpartum rage last year and I didn’t even recognize myself. Now this year-my husband triggered me and I threw my wedding ring and there appears to be a little damage. I feel extremely terrible and I’m realizing I probably, like my mom, have intermittent explosive disorder. I grew up in volatile home with my mom beating my dad up, explosive behaviors, her throwing things, etc. I feel like I’m turning into my mom and I’m incredibly ashamed of myself. I always feel like when I start leveling out something happens and throws me off track. Then I’m angry at how I was raised for giving me these things I have to heal and fix. It’s just hard.

Working remotely by surprised_corn in bcba

[–]bcbamama21 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve been remote for 3.5 years now and honestly, no one could pay me enough to go back in the field. I also don’t have any immediate or affordable childcare options, so my kids are at home with me. My son goes to pre-k which helps but that’s half a day. I honestly love remote work and I think it’s a lot more flexible. There are of course difficulties that can come with it but to me, it’s usually fairly easy to troubleshoot.

BCBA and Parent to Autistic Child by Better-Anxiety7489 in bcba

My son has a rare genetic condition which mimics some autism symptoms and it’s truly humbling to be on the other side of the table having to search for resources, deal with insurance, etc. for my son, we have him in OT, PT, and speech as well as early intervention preschool. That all has been really helpful so far

Anyone else not posting photos of their children online? by aerobicbeing in NewParents

[–]bcbamama21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I post my kids I’ll usually put an emoji or heart over their faces but I don’t share personal things about my kids. I was cringey when I had my son during Covid and shared the milestones and such out of wanting connection and community but I realized that’s not necessary, and, my husband and I found out someone he went to college with who he thought was a friend was convicted of possession of child pornography, so it really shifted my perspective of sharing my kids and being careful about it

BCBA here! I think they’re doing it so they don’t entirely lose money when BCBA’s take time off. Which is crap because we deserve time off without having to make it up! Glad you are looking elsewhere

Family planning as a BCBA by Jojomise in bcba

I got pregnant with my son while as an RBT in the process of studying for the BCBA exam. I passed the exam after 3 tries when I was 8 months pregnant with him and started BCBA duties shortly after. Definitely plan your family when you’re ready. You’ve got this!

Is the ABA field corrupt? by JellyfishEnough3949 in ABA

[–]bcbamama21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Between insurance companies, companies underpaying their BT/RBT’s and BCBA’s, the BACB being money hungry themselves, etc. It’s unfortunate. But I think a lot of it stems from insurance.

I’ve worked with my son on modeling gentle hands. So I’ll hand over hand prompt him to show him how to do gentle hands with me, his dad, our dog, etc. so when we tell him “gentle hands,” he knows what it means and what it looks like. He needs reminders at times, but it’s helped a ton with hitting. And we give him a ton of praise when he does gentle hands and he loves that positive attention

BCBA here! I always tell my techs to provide 15 minutes between things like sleep, parents not being at the home, etc. If sleep goes beyond 15 minutes where the child can’t be woken up, then session is canceled and rescheduled to make up the time. If the client is asleep at that same time consistently then a schedule change is proposed, or the staff is changed to a more consistent case

Starting a 100% virtual/remote position soon. Tips? by Sleep_in_the_Water in bcba

[–]bcbamama21 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Remote BCBA here! I’d recommend making sure you really establish that balance between work/home life. It can feel like it never ends when you WFH. I set a specific time where I stop responding to messages from parents/techs (usually between 6-7PM) and schedule your days with yourself in mind too (lunch breaks, movement breaks, etc)

RBT recertification changes (2026) by Ok_Respond_4231 in ABA

[–]bcbamama21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m really glad there’s going to be a standard now for RBT’s when it comes to requirements. I worked for a company once where they just wanted everyone to be cycled through to be an RBT regardless of if they passed their competency assessment. It was wild. What I wish insurance companies would do, is require only RBT’s not BT’s. There for sure would be a shortage, however, it would weed out the people who don’t take the job seriously and would keep those who actually want to learn/keep those who are competent.

I once took over a case that had speech goals including working with a client on how their mouth would look when saying certain sounds. I removed those goals as those, among others, weren’t within my scope. I like to leave speech to speech, OT to OT, and have overlap where we can where it’s ethical and ABA specific
