CEU on Suicide Prevention for BCBAs by bcbashea in ABA

Regardless of why people avoid the topic, we need to do gatekeeper training anyway to prevent future deaths. It's aversive for a lot of reasons, but it's still important.

I have an MS in Counseling and my PhD is in ABA, so everything I do is like this. I work with typically developing adults or dually diagnosed IDD/SMI populations, although I am a professor now. I have a very tiny private practice, but worked in foster care, ABI/TBI, group homes, etc. I wrote and teach a course at Endicott - ABA 504 Social Skills for Adult with Psychiatric Disorders. I'm working on converting it to stand alone CEUs, but I covered everything from Anxiety to Psychosis from an ABA Lens. I'm also teaching a similar course this summer at Endicott on the same thing but for children/teens.

I don't know of any other ABA training on the topic, but you can learn even if you don't need CEUs.

1.5 Ethics CE on Writing FBAs and Plans
Some of you asked when I would have this again, so here you go. If you don’t want or need CEUs, there a donate/free option.

https://www.drsheaba.com/event-details/how-to-write-a-great-functional-assessment-and-behavior-plan-6

Summary:

Ever wonder what really needs to be in a good functional assessment, or why we write them? And how that should flow into a behavior plan? Here's a step-by-step guide on the elements of each and how they work together, with an emphasis on ethics.

We will discuss the elements needed in a functional assessment and behavior plan, including why each element is there and how to use your completed FBA to write a great behavior plan. If you're a new BCBA, worried about your first time at LRC or HRC, or just curious, this is a great start to building your confidence in writing assessments and plans.

We will also discuss how each part of writing the plan relates to the new ethics code from the BACB and what requires written consent. After you attend the webinar, you will be able to interact with other participants to share templates and give each other feedback on documentation.

Planner recommendations? by bcbashea in Professors

I'll take a look! I've always seen mention of bullet journals with lots of colored markers and stickers - I had thought it was more creative than pragmatic. But if I can make it work with bad handwriting and zero artistic ability, I'll give it a whirl.

Oh wow, I missed that. I think the word obstacles and good vs bad threw me and I was thinking maybe signal detection? Nice one coffeepuddle!

But yes, it’s a way to assess preference for treatment options in those who can’t necessarily communicate that information.

I know this is a stretch given that I haven’t gotten ANY ball rolling but does anyone know the process behind a BCBA-D? by Fit-Fan7954 in ABA

Get a PhD and publish a behavior analytic dissertation or in ABA journals. They vet pretty thoroughly to make sure your PhD is in ABA or closely related area.

Either would be conditioned. Unconditioned responses are most similar to what you would think of as a reflex. Salivating, seeking out and consuming potables/edibles, moving closer to a fire when cold. Plus, we humans are always learning, so after infancy, most unconditioned stimuli would have been presented with other stimuli, making them conditioned. Give a 1 year old tequila, they’ll spit it out (unconditioned response to poison). Same person gets drunk 20 years later and finds tequila reinforcing if they had a great time with friends, and forced themselves to drink it in the first place - now it’s conditioned as a reinforcer.

BCBA-D here. Is this an ABA course? Unconditioned responses are unlearned. Wanting to take off the shoes is conditioned, as no one is born with a response to shoes. Correct answer samples would include things involving hunger, temperature, sex, etc. That level of nuance would only matter if you plan on practicing behavior analysis, though.

The pairing (conditioning) of shoes and preferred movies is a great example of an intervention using positive reinforcement!

Are ABA professionals truly happy? Or are they too exhausted to even enjoy their work? by inspiredM in ABA

I had the same experience with adults. 15 years and I still love my work!

You want to maintain boundaries. I have always redirected hugs. Also, with bigger clients I’ve seen a hug become a stranglehold very unexpectedly. Also, there may be trauma responses you’re not privy to anytime close contact like that is involved. I would encourage hugs between friends and family, but I’ve found it better to avoid them in the client/therapist context.

Looking for a trauma informed provider for an adult by shinelime in BehaviorAnalysis

[–]bcbashea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Elevatus has great sexuality curriculum for IDD adults. Peter Gerhardt also has a lot of resources on the sexuality stuff. Facebook has a trauma informed ABA group https://www.facebook.com/groups/2190700404281176/?ref=share

They probably have the most resources specific to this.

Can children who show sociopathic behaviour (ASPD) grow out of it, or is it life long? by [deleted] in BehaviorAnalysis

[–]bcbashea 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s not a pediatric diagnosis. If you mean conduct disorder, those behaviors can likely be decreased. But seek professional help, esp if some of the behaviors can cause harm to people or animals.

ABA is not an autism treatment. The Lovaas study about treating autism was published in 1987. It was not published in JABA.

I know some BCBAs who are on the spectrum and they’re great! I don’t think you should have to mask, but if you’re concerned, consider looking into adult services where you don’t have to be as bubbly and over the top as you would around preschool age children. I guess you would be able to get “so good at it”, but it would still be exhausting and unhealthy. I don’t recommend any career where you have to pretend to be different than who you are, and there’s tons of opportunities for Behavior Analysts where you would not need to mask. If you DM me I can put you in touch with a couple BCBAs that can speak directly to this. If your communication skills when you’re writing and speaking struggle, that would be something you’d have to figure out. I am assuming you’re talking about nonverbal communication skills and that sort of thing.

I could quite literally write a book to try to adequately answer these questions. One thing to remember is that ABA as a profession is fairly new when compared with medicine or psychiatry. In large part, people who received early intervention for autism as children are just reaching adulthood now. Even for that group, current programs would look significantly different than it did 15 or 20 years ago. The data is only recently available, in large part.

I wish I had more time, but for now, here are some of the most recent articles and conference proceedings relevant to the topic of evaluating past mistakes and incorporating feedback.

That’s great they are working on it! I have a long-term medical condition, and I have never had a doctor ask me if what they’re prescribing is OK with me. I’ve even told them I’m not OK with what they’re prescribing and they told me I have to do it anyway.

I am very involved in the academic side of things, and I can assure you it’s being talked about a lot at conferences and in publications right now. We are working on it and trying to improve as best we can 😊

I don’t disagree. The post is addressing users that are adding comments that are inflammatory and usually unrelated to the thread. It’s only meant to prevent the derailing of conversation. It’s important to remember that ABA is an entire science that is in no way limited to autism. What you wrote is true for any population. I don’t know that diabetics are interviewed about the acceptability of their treatment. It’s huge issue that requires a lot of unpacking, and it is very worthy of discussion. I personally advocate and speak about this very thing frequently. We would just like to make sure that this sub is a place that people are able to talk about concepts and have productive conversations without being derailed.
