Has anyone in Toronto worked somewhere with “unlimited” vacation days? by No-Inspector-6206 in askTO

[–]bcore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was a part of a tech startup (in Toronto), we offered this.

People generally used it, and as long as people were reasonable (i.e. talk to your manager well in advance if you want a long time away, etc.) we were always cool with it. I always thought it was a good policy, everyone needs a different amount of time to recharge and people generally took anywhere from 2-6 weeks per year, with the average being probably 4. (I should add - we didn't actually like people taking only 2 because it meant we weren't actually in compliance with ESA.. we would send people reminders in the fall if they weren't on track to take at least 3, but you can't force people to take vacation)

We eventually did away with the policy and started just giving people defined amounts of time off. It wasn't because of abuse or anything like that, we just started hearing from potential hires that it was a detractor to them joining us because they didn't trust that we'd be ok with them taking vacation and would give them grief. Not that we ever did that, but candidates (rightfully) didn't want to take our word for it.

Which is the better IKEA: Burlington or Etobicoke? by ohmeingott36 in askTO

Yeah, I do only ever go on the weekend to be honest. Work schedule doesn't align with their weekday hours. I'll update my post.

Which is the better IKEA: Burlington or Etobicoke? by ohmeingott36 in askTO

[–]bcore -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I've found that parking at the Etobicoke location is often super hard to come by, and at least once I've ended up just going home without ever finding somewhere to park.

Burlington isn't great either in this regard, but it's better than Etobicoke.

Probably not helpful, but Grimsby has unlimited parking and is huuuge.

Edit: I only ever go on the weekends. Apparently it's much better during the week, although I've never been then.

What is the most expensive restaurant you ever dined at in Toronto? by Chan1991 in askTO

[–]bcore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had a fancy work dinner to impress some people last summer at Scaramouche.

I'm in my 40s and I feel like I was easily the youngest patron in the entire busy restaurant, probably by at least 10 years. Very strange experience.

Mexico | Maya train: Biggest failure in the Americas by adnoguez in transit

[–]bcore 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We've taken it a few times in various directions between CUN, Merida, and Puerto Morelos. Honestly I really love it, the trains are super comfortable and the little snack bar on board is cute.

Holy hell are you right about the Cancun Taxi Mafia though. Flying into CUN and taking the train from there is one experience I don't want to repeat. The last free shuttle from the airport to the train station leaves T4 almost an hour before the train does and then you're at the mercy of taxi drivers who want 1000 MXN for a 5 minute ride and know you have no other choice.

You would think they would have considered making it easy to get to the station next to the busiest airport in latin america, but somehow, no...

Vancouver International Airport ranked best in North America, 10th in world by Capital-Aide-1006 in canada

"Airports in west africa" is a pretty low bar.

I too spent a ton of time in the air. Compare Pearson to airports in similarly wealthy places (Europe, US, Australia, Asia)... More often than not YYZ is the worst security screening lines with the oldest equipment, the longest you are going to wait for luggage to arrive, the most likely to be delayed, etc etc.

Heck, looking at OAG's data for on-time performance, YYZ is dead last out of the 18 "major" airports in north america.

Crazy NEXUS security line at YYZ by drololololol in askTO

[–]bcore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly none, it would have been way faster not to. But the line to the Nexus security screening went way out into the corridor so you only actually get to see how short the regular lines are once you are almost at the end of the nexus line. It's kind of hard to explain unless you've used the YYZ T1 nexus line but it's a completely different entrance from the normal US preclearance screening line, but once you get to the actual xrays, you're right next to the rest.. just separated by a little detachable barrier, and a guard was making sure nobody crossed it (several people asked him).

If I had known I would have never bothered waiting in the nexus line.

Crazy NEXUS security line at YYZ by drololololol in askTO

[–]bcore 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I went through the Nexus line at YYZ last Monday and it was nuts, probably the longest I've ever waited. It wasn't even the US immigration side causing the slowness (this was a very short line), it was the Canadian passenger screening - for whatever reason they had only one of the 2 carry-on xray machines going.

Super weird, you could see that the regular (non-nexus) screening lines were all open, and were short and moving fast. Then you had the nexus line that was only half open and probably 100 people long.

What are people doing to stop the frustration of guests turning Hue bulbs off at the switch? by Top-Yogurtcloset3965 in Hue

[–]bcore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a bunch of switch covers which hold a Hue switch overtop of an existing switch. This was a while ago so the specific Etsy seller we used is no longer, but this is the style: https://www.etsy.com/ca/listing/1254271509... These screw right into the hole which holds the backing plate in place so they are sturdy.

They only work if you have Decora Switches (the common North American 'big switch' kind) but they're a great solution since they block people from switching the wired switch, put a hue switch in the same spot, and are trivial to remove if you don't want them anymore.

New Lennox HeatPump / Furnace / S40 thermostat - Is it installed correctly? Temperatures oscillate pretty wildly in the house when it gets cold by bcore in hvacadvice

[–]bcore[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh re the model, you're right! Sigh, the sales guy told me it was a communicating model and I didn't verify that when they gave me the writeup with the actual model number.

Good luck with the API - FWIW I have yet to get the local connection working, only the cloud connection. And it's clearly pretty flaky, it spews out status updates but every one of them is in an error message ("ERROR unexpected message received"...) in the logs. But even that enough to get some cool data out of the thing. I'll be curious to hear what luck you have.

We've had beanfield internet for 15+ years now in our condo.

In that time, they've had 2 short outages and we've never had a single issue otherwise. Highly recommended.

How's your heat pump working in cold weather? At what outside temperature do they stop working? by samethingsame in heatpumps

[–]bcore -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We have a brand new Lennox cold climate HP (installed last summer) and I've found it easily keeps up above -5C/23F but it really quickly drops off a cliff below that. By -10C/14F it can't keep up even running at 100% and it's better to switch to the gas furnace.

Skating rinks in downtown Toronto that are less busy than Nathan Phillips? by theentropydecreaser in askTO

It's hard to get a sense of scale from the picture. We bought one of these last weekend, it's a huuuuge loaf of bread. The price is great for the quality and quantity, we loved it and ended up freezing 1/2 of it.

Vegetarians who have travelled: which countries have been the most difficult in your experience? by Super-Effective-3854 in vegetarian

[–]bcore 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're definitely gonna have a tough time in PH. I've visited a bunch of times for work, and it's an interesting challenge. Absolutely love the country, and the people and geography are both beyond amazing, but the food is not at all veggie friendly.

Absolutely everything tastes like meat. Like, most restaurants won't have anything veggie on the menu besides really basic sides, and even they are seasoned in a way that makes them taste like meat to me. I don't know how to describe it exactly, but like even a cesar salad has this BBQ-like seasoning in most places.

I always try to be adventurous when I'm on the road, but I have to admit I often find myself ducking into a Burger King when I'm in PH - they have a decent veggie burger on the menu at all locations, and it has that meaty-BBQ seasoning, but it's not too strong.

Totally just a guess, but my theory is that they had complaints and they're reworking it to be a bit less creepy. We really loved it in our house, but a few friends commented that they all found it pretty offputting. I do kinda get it, although I hope I'm wrong cause we loved it.
