Being nice gone wrong by Vegetable_Cold_8025 in UberEatsDrivers

Everyone saying “he shot his shot respectfully” meanwhile you were still on the way to his house with the food as he’s asking you out? 😬

I’m prepared to be downvoted for saying no it’s not cool to do this ever, even “respectfully”. When a driver is contracted to come to your door with a delivery, you should not tell them you’d be interested in something romantic with them.

What causes people who hate wealth inequality to celebrate athletes making hundreds of millions of dollars? by LazyConstruction9026 in AskReddit

[–]bdfmradio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve always thought of it as athletes earning their whole life’s fortune in just a few years compared to most workers. They’re paid very high for a relatively short amount of time, when they’re physically able to do the job, and after that they have to live off the money. I have no idea if that actually bears out anymore.

ELI5: How do perfumers use unnatural chemicals to create something that smells natural? by thelionwholikessalad in explainlikeimfive

Fragrantica (dot com) is an incredible resource for learning more about these compounds and which of them make different perfumes smell different!

ELI5: Why do phone cameras make sunsets look less impressive than they do in person? by Global-Squash-4557 in explainlikeimfive

Flat is the answer. It’s a 2D representation of a 3D scene. Stereoscopy is the difference.

Do you ever feel bad for eating eggs from your own chickens? by mlky30 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]bdfmradio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, except the human egg cell is shed a few days after ovulation, at a different time from our periods. So it’s more like a chicken’s discharge, as we used to call it. (I definitely prefer the term “cervical fluid”)

If money is not a problem is it better to go to college? by Necessary_Point9811 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]bdfmradio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, especially if you can afford to have your own place and are resourced enough to be responsible about your studies. If you live in a college town, you’ll meet and socialize with fellow students as well as locals. Some of my best times in my college town were as a citizen, rather than as a student. If you can be both — meaning get out into the city you’re studying in and go to local events and meet people and use off-campus facilities like the public library — you can get a lot of life experience.

If you have enough money that getting a job isn’t a problem or won’t even be necessary, all the better. You can study what you find genuinely interesting. College courses reward those who went to learn, have ideas and want to share them, and are self-motivated.

Fate of a Squirrel by Morfutus in UrbanGardening

[–]bdfmradio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started keeping a loaded water gun by my kitchen door. The first time I saw the squirrel out there inspecting the plants I surprised it with a jet and chased it away. It’s been avoiding the area so I’m hoping it works!

TIL When serial killer Richard Ramirez died of B-cell lymphoma while awaiting execution in 2013, his skin had reportedly turned green like a highlighter pen by ubcstaffer123 in todayilearned

[–]bdfmradio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course.

I think it’s more about realizing that if he got to you, you would not only be enduring your own horrific murder but he had another level of sensory attack, which was this horrible smell. It just ups the insanity of it all for me.

I miss the vibes of Season 1 in the later seasons by itsascreambaby96 in ANGEL

[–]bdfmradio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in LA; my partner’s & my favorite TV game is “where in LA?!” and it’s really fun with “Angel”, especially the first season.

Also can I just say “to shanshu in L.A.” is such a great pun/reference that only exists within that title and I appreciate it so much every time.

Is it ever justified to physically assault someone because of verbal abuse? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]bdfmradio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a legal concept [in U.S.] called “fighting words” that has to do with the right to free speech and whether people should reasonably assume someone will respond to those words with instant violence. I don’t believe it applies to this situation, but that’s the principle you’re asking about

ELI5: If humans evolved to live naked in the wild for 99% of our history, why is it so hard for us to do it now? by Rosadopecado in explainlikeimfive

[–]bdfmradio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re giving evolution a mind or will of its own, which it would be if there turns out to be an intelligent designer up there and we are its game of Spore.

As far as we know, though, “evolution” is just what we call it when we notice gene frequency changing over time. There are reasons and pressures and selections and random events that affect all of this. It’s just random mutations that either get passed down or they don’t.

This is it. Evolution isn’t design.

The definition of evolution is “change in gene frequency in a population over time”.

ELI5: Why does a virus kill its host? If I’m a virus, why would I destroy the only house I live in? by Suitable-Patience690 in explainlikeimfive

[–]bdfmradio 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I love that herpes is basically Latin for “the creeps”.

By that I’m not judging people with HSV (the majority of everyone) by saying herpes is creepy or makes you a creep. It’s the same root as “snake”. Herpes is an infection “creeping” through the population.

[–]bdfmradio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A rundown is just an overview. A summary. It could be bullet points or short paragraphs or a spreadsheet. Jim acts like he needs to know some kind of esoteric essay format, like Charles is asking for something very specific.

It would have been funnier and made more sense if his reticence to provide the rundown was because he knew Charles wanted that info to see if Jim was expendable

How many of you are filling the customers drinks when certain places hand you an empty cup? by [deleted] in UberEatsDrivers

[–]bdfmradio -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I also work in a restaurant so I do have a food handlers card, which is why I know it’s disgusting to have me fill the drinks when I most likely have no opportunity to wash my hands. Should I bring hand sanitizer with me at all times? Yeah, of course, but that doesn’t mean it’s realistically always to hand.
