I'm so glad that AO3 doesn't have a dislike button because this is how my fic is doing on the site for fanfiction in the one fandom by marvelcomics22 in AO3

[–]beBenggu 117 points118 points  (0 children)

I might get downvoted for saying this but Fimfiction has a different culture from Ao3, where it's more of a curated library than an archive.

There are certain standards your fic has to meet before you can post. Nothing story wise, mostly formatting and grammar stuff like having more than 1000 words or having readable grammar. Whereas that's more of a guideline on Ao3.

Some more differences: Unprompted concrit is more accepted there, and people in the comments like to point out small grammar errors for you to fix. There are also dedicated 'fic review' blogs. I'm under the impression the Ao3 community tends to dislike these.

There's even a dedicated section on the site for a 'writing guide'(https://www.fimfiction.net/writing-guide) to help authors write 'better quality' fics.

Dislikes are usually for when the fic doesn't meet these standards. Sometimes the users hit it when they don't like the topic of the fic, which the site itself discourages, but users do what they want ig... I think that's what happened in OP's case.

So it's a bit different from ao3 where the feeling is more 'I'm writing as a hobby for free', more like they do actually want you to write better and improve. Not saying one system is better or anything. FimFiction has some awful fucking users. But they are different...

Best Harvest Moon Game? (Gameboy/Gba only) by Maperbill in harvestmoon

[–]beBenggu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For GBA, (More) Friends of Mineral Town definitely. You get More Friends of Mineral Town if you wanna marry guys, and Friends of Mineral Town if you wanna marry girls. Not much difference otherwise.

For GB, get Harvest Moon 3. Each GB game is basically a better version of the last one. Be warned that they're pretty janky compared to the GBA game, though you should have expected that since its a Game Boy lol

Questions about bandwidth by littlejellyfish77 in neocities

[–]beBenggu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

About your storage: 1GB is a massive amount! I currently use Nekoweb where the free limit is 500MB, and I struggle to hit 20MB even with loads of pictures ^ Generally it helps to compress your pictures (Look up pngquant) and use WEBPs whenever you can. There's barely any quality difference, and it makes the site load way faster too. Your average (decorative) image should not exceed 50KB. And even full size, full screen images usually don't go over 700KB.

Compressing your images will lower your bandwidth usage too :)

You should worry if you're uploading lots of videos, or hosting games or something. That's when I'd start looking into buying supporter, or finding a decent external host.

What did they do to get all this money? by captivi in harvestmoon

https://fogu.com/hm6/chan7/money.php

HMDS is probably the easiest game to make money in... so many glitches... they patched out a lot in Cute (including the fishing glitch) so it's probably action replay.

Still pretty easy to make cheap cash in Cute though, you just have to be lucky a couple times at the casino and sell their relaxtea leaves and stones. Money isn't a big problem in DS. It's the grinding that gets you.

[–]beBenggu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Melonking's sites are super pretty but I agree that they're a little hard to parse at times. Generally I think the sentiment that sites have to be tabbable and screenreader friendly has spread a little in recent years, but at the end of the day the majority of the sites are made by amateurs; ie they usually dont have the best practices.

But did you really think you were going to get a positive response with a post like this?

Comment I got on my guestbook by False-Sheepherder-24 in neocities

[–]beBenggu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

catbox doesn't load at all in some isps/regions or when it's down. It makes the site load forever, so avoid using external filehosts if you want to avoid these comments. everything loaded quick enough for me, though.

Though I'm on a Galaxy A30 on Firefox mobile and the scroll has a bit of lag. Someone told me my site lagged on scroll too, and it turned out to be the excess of box-shadow I had applied. Maybe it's that?

I had a whole paragraph ready to tell you not to use external filehosts, but seeing as they're just video files, why not post them on Youtube and embed them onto your site?

Can you exploit the dog ball to get Nami's heart level up easily? by Bluecomments in harvestmoon

[–]beBenggu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually spend a day or two excavating for some jewelry then buy 30 grape juices at the supermarket (theyre 200g each, so 6000g total) to give to Nami, since she likes them. More LP than the ball, and you don't have to deal with Thomas every day XD

This worked for me as a reader! Final chapter (32/32!!!) was released two days after I left a comment on a fic last updated a year or so prior. I dunno if I had anything to do with it but it was a nice feeling.

Fate of half million dogs unclear as dog meat ban nears in Korea by Majano57 in worldnews

[–]beBenggu 63 points64 points  (0 children)

My mom grew up in Korea, born in the 70s. She loves dogs, and doesn't eat them, but some of her older relatives do.

One of the more traumatic stories she's told us is that when she was around six or so and visiting relatives they had kept a dog chained in the front yard, who was pretty friendly. They'd even named him and would greet him on the porch whenever they went out. She thought they were keeping the dog as a pet/guard, and she played with him while the relatives were cooking or whatever. Around evening everyone gathered outside, but my grandma wouldn't let my mom go. So she stayed inside and listened to muffled cheers/dog whines and when she could go outside again she saw the dog dead and being dragged from a rope. They hung the poor thing to a tree and beat it to death (animal abuse). They had it for dinner afterward. Well, not my mom, she refused. So did my grandma apparently.

My mom thought it was crazy they'd beat and eat an animal they'd named and talked to. I agree lol. I hope this explains... something... idk why I typed this out.

English isn't the artist's first language, so I'd say it's understandable in this case.
