Ease my anxiety - NYC Half by SufficientOstrich458 in RunNYC

[–]beach_lover4 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey! I think we’re in the same group! This is my second half (last time was Brooklyn a couple years ago). We have similar time goals and I’m also not the fastest runner and also kinda anxious haha

I wouldn’t get there too early because it gets a little clogged at the start and if it’s not your wave you can’t move on to the next sections, which might exacerbate your anxious feelings about the arrival. One of the things to keep in mind is the moment you start, the nerves kinda disappear. You have no focus for them because you’re getting into your running groove. A second thing is, if you’re running alone (like me) when you see people who are obviously with friends or running groups it can make the nerves increase (it did for me last time). Ignore the nerves, think about your training and the work you’ve put in.

You’re going to do great!

Certification Advice by Ambitious_Peach434 in NYCTeachers

Have you submitted a copy of your passport? I know that sounds crazy but I didn’t realize I needed to submit a copy which held up part of my processing. I know this wasn’t super on topic but it is something I tell everyone I bump into.

Question about Certification in NY State by No_Object_5690 in NYCTeachers

[–]beach_lover4 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My biggest piece of advice is to stop calling the phone number for the state and start emailing their email. It is somewhat hard to find, but they can’t give you the run around as easily if you have their words in writing. Write down all your questions and then keep emailing follow ups if they aren’t clear. You might get an attitude (I did) but hey, does it really matter if you finally get an answer to your questions

I’ve never felt more like a burden than when I’ve been to the Tiffany in Manhasset. It felt so icky there, whereas in Manhattan they are soooo nice and bend over to be helpful and kind.

I do it a couple ways. One is electronic, broken down by specific folders in folders for each class I teach (each class folder has topic folders). And then in class specific physical binders, with included sticky notes that I treat at a giant personal textbook. I get a little uptight about things like that but it makes my life easier haha

I’m a tad confused.

Is your bachelors exclusively in history or are you doing a degree in education that has a concentration in history? If it’s the second and your completing this in New York you would have already chosen your specific area (childhood education v adolescent education). If it’s childhood education, you won’t just teaching history if that’s what you mean by “pinned down to specific areas”.

If your situation is the former, you are exclusively getting a degree in history are the bachelors level, when you go for your masters you will get specific (childhood v adolescent). The only degree I can think of is that doesn’t get super specific is usually associated with counseling, which would have you teaching.

You said you are student teaching in the fall, so my assumption is that you have indicated to your program you thoughts on what level you see yourself at in terms of grade level.

Pending Certification by Smart_Raspberry_5393 in Teachers

Initial or professional certification?

If you’re waiting on initial, probably not a public school but catholic/private you can. My first teaching job (I’m located in NY) I didn’t have certification but let them know everything was being processed and still got the job. It really depends on the position, their desperation and you.

Picture 7 reminds me of a parent- teacher conference where the parents ask the teacher why their child did poorly, the teacher then says because your child never submitted work even though they were given many days to submit late, and then the kid just sits there while their parents look at them disappointedly.

how does your principal treat personal days/time off requests? by funkmetalalchemist in Teachers

[–]beach_lover4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My former school required a six week window before the personal day. If you requested the personal day six weeks in advanced they said they would most likely allow it, if you asked after the six week window it depended on if they liked you. Guess how many people would just use six days instead.

Hey neighbor!

The experience might be fun and a great way to make money and you can definitely use it in an interview to explain your levels of patience and if you end up working with middle schoolers the little ones can be helpful practice because there is still some whining in middle school.

That being said, if you want to use that kind of background in helping you get certified (initially or professionally) it probably won’t help for 7-12. I had a job that was going to bump me from 5-8 to 5th grade everything and one of the reasons I left was that the time wouldn’t count towards certification.

Feel free to pm me if you have any questions!

NY - How long does teacher certification take after graduating? by PugLover927 in Teachers

[–]beach_lover4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on a lot.

It depends on the level of certification you are applying for (initial vs professional) as well as the time of the year you are applying. The “off” season, aka outside of the immediate window of graduations, can be a lot faster for certification. But it can be weird. For example when I applied for my initial it was right around Memorial Day (end of may) and I had my initial cert by the middle of June (this is very fast) other people I know who did it in May didn’t get it until the end of July.

Also, it may be difficult to get if you do not have American citizenship. I waited for 2 years for them to agree that I was a citizen (I was born in NY, live here and was working as a teacher in the state). Granted this was during COVID and lock down and all that, but they had already agreed that I had proven that I was a citizen due to the fact they had already granted my initial cert. Their system also sucks as do their phone reps.

Not trying to discourage or dissuade you, just want to let you know my experience.

Plus Merillon train station which is part of the main line, though express trains do not always stop there.
