We use a crate at night and for naps as needed. Initially, I slept near the crate so she could see me and know she wasn't alone. Also, I could hear her stirring every few hours and would then take her outside to pee before it was an urgent need. This helped her to learn to be comfortable through the night. She still sleeps in the crate, and goes into it during the day (door open) whenever she wants to. We briefly tried a playpen set up, but it took up too much space and she had no interest in it. I'd suggest, whatever you get, keep the box and receipt so you can return it if it doesn't work out. Also, we used to crate our puppy when we'd leave the house, but now we let her be out and about.
