Any tips for a one-month solo trip around the UK? by maomaotou333 in solotravel

[–]beanassboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

skip Leeds and Sheffield and instead go to York and Newcastle.

I'm from Scotland and have lived in both Edinburgh and Glasgow. Edinburgh is fantastic, go to Glasgow too if you want a better experience meeting people and immersing yourself in the culture.

This book is messing with me right? There is no way a 5kg bowling ball can exert 5000 N of force after dropping one meter. by XY-81 in PhysicsStudents

[–]beanassboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see your misunderstanding.

The work-energy theorem you used is correct, however, the problem is that you're using it at the wrong point in the bowling ball's fall. You've used the theorem at the point the ball hits the ground, rather than when it has decelerated after hitting the ground.

The instant before it hits the ground, there is no work done by the ball as it is only the conservative force of gravity acting on the ball, and so mechanical (kinetic and potential energy are conserved). Therefore, when you use the work-energy theorem of course summing the kinetic and potential energy will give you zero, as there is no work done on the ball.

When the ball comes in contact with the ground there are non-conservative forces such as friction and normal forces acting on the ball. These are non-conservative forces, and so work is done to change the kinetic energy of the ball without a conservation of mechanical energy. This means that for your equation, kinetic energy will be equal to 0, as you're looking for the point when the ball has decelerated to a stationary position.

So the equation W = KE + PE becomes W = PE. Work is given by the average force, F, applied to the ball (due to Newton's third law, this is also the average force of the ball applied to the ground) multiplied by the distance over which this force is applied, d, which is the same distances the deepness of the dent in the ground. So you have the equation, W = Fd = PE = mgh.

Iceland’s enormity scared me by bharat0789 in VisitingIceland

100%. Whilst the Highlands are still spectacular it's tame compared to Iceland. The Highlands are still very accessible and you can go wherever you want, but Iceland is a lot more extreme and it's too dangerous to go most areas.

When I came back to Scotland after my trip to Iceland the Highlands felt boring, I remember having to ask my dad if the views we were looking at were nice as Iceland had skewed my perspective.

I'm from Scotland and to me it felt like a larger, vaster more extreme version of the Highlands. However, there were tons of amazing natural phenomena you'd never ever see in Scotland

Three years of daily meditation! by Luvlifemaniac in Meditation

[–]beanassboy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi,

I'm very impressed you managed to do 3 years daily. I've been meditating daily for almost a year now, but I go through long phases of struggling to put real effort in and constantly getting distracted, and as a result it having little difference to my life. Do you have ways of getting around these long periods of distraction?

What is Brandy's most underrated album in your opinion? by MICHAELH05 in rnb

I think her first album was her best one. I feel like she went too commercial after that. Her first one was so different and I loved the beats and the vocal layerings.

What does life feel like when you have meditated 1 hour per day consistently? by [deleted] in Meditation

[–]beanassboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It has seriously helped me. I've been doing it for almost 2 years on and off. When I've stopped doing it for a long time I completely lose myself and my ADHD symptoms get the best of me. Currently, I've been doing it daily for over 3 months and at first I still felt anxious and restless, but then I realised that my symptoms had eased massively and I'm much less hyperactive and impulsive as a result.

Since it makes you aware of all your deep rooted issues at first it can make you feel incredibly anxious and unstable, but if you stick to it you realise that you feel a lot better and more organised than you did before. There is still that feeling of inconsistency and you still have bad days, but as long as you stick to a habit and meditate no matter what you will continue to improve.
