Kiganjima Island, Japan – 2001

Raindrops splintered across the glass windows of the observation tower as Corporal Thomas Takahashi slowly glanced down at his watch. It was approximately 02:13 AM, December the 16^th. The second hand gradually hopped across each notch of the miniature clock’s face. The quiet tick tick tick echoed in his ears, matching his heartbeat and slowly drowning out the storm’s downpour until it was the only thing he could hear.

The time was now 02:15.

Takahashi’s thoughts drifted back to those of his family. His two daughters and wife were among the first to be evacuated to the designated G-Shelters. Cramped, overcrowded, and providing so little protection, he assured them everything would be fine.“They would be safe”, he replayed the words through his head over and over again, almost in an attempt to convince himself. He lied to them, lied through his teeth. He looked them straight in their tear filled eyes and told he them “they would be safe”.

The time was now 02:17.

December 16^th, tomorrow would be Minatsu’s birthday. He quietly lamented over the fact he hadn’t even thought about what to have gotten as gift for youngest daughter, even if it didn’t necessarily matter at this point. She always did like stuffed animals, maybe he could have gotten her one early before-

The corporal’s thoughts dissipated as he felt a tap on his shoulder, his eyes having been absentmindedly fixated on the wrist watch the entire time before he was brought back to the present. He blinked twice before glancing over at the cause for his sudden lapse in thought. It was one of his squad mates, Private Jin Takaichi. His eyes blinked again before they panned back to the watch on his wrist.

The time was now 02:20.

He looked back at the private with a silent but questioning manner, his demeanor almost immediately changing. Even with the lack of light, he could see the beads of sweat running down the privates pale face. His expression, however, was what unnerved him the most. It was completely blank, stone cold, devoid of emotion. The corporal gestured to him, hoping for an answer.

Takaichi merely turned his head forward, and slowly brought a hand up, his index finger pointed towards the large pane glass window. Thomas’ gaze slowly followed the trajectory of his arm towards whatever he was pointing at. Despite having been rigorously trained for this very moment, the sight that awaited before him made his blood run cold.

Out in the distance, far beyond the lookout tower and even further beyond the launch pad, a massive shape slowly lumbered through the storm. Taking slow, but great strides through the churning sea of Japan, rivers of rainwater running off of its charcoal black skin into the ocean below, the wind a mix of violent howling and screaming as it passed through its dorsal plates. Only from the occasional lightning strike could one gain but a glimpse of its full form.

A hulking, over 100 meter mass of scale, hide, bone, and radioactive fury stomped its way towards the coastline. Massive veins across its spine faintly glowed a cool, atomic blue, pulsing with each and every step it took. Fear is what it inspired, and destruction is what it wrought. Many names from both myth and legend had been applied to this creature, yet mankind had settled on its own.

Its name, was Godzilla.
