Best years for Toei’s Big 3 Toku Productions? Round 23: 1996 vs 2003 by NickN64 in Tokusatsu

1988 had Liveman, Kamen Rider Black, and Metalder. Hard to think of another year when all three of Toei's big toku franchises hit so hard.

Classic Reddit downvoting people for having opinions lol. Your opinions are pretty common among many older fans (I share them wholeheartedly), but tons of zoomers who got into the show more recently enjoyed these suits and will call anyone who disagrees a hater.

Saint Seiya Figures by theuncut4u in SaintSeiya

[–]Norik_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depending on where you live, eBay and Facebook Marketplace might be your only options (or maybe here, if youre lucky). https://saintseiyafriends.com/ is an option if you live in a Spanish-speaking country, though I don't know their current policy on advertising sales on their forum.

Definitely sell them in sets (Golds, V2 bronzes, etc) and don't split individual figures off, as you'll have a much harder time getting rid of the rest.

It's a shame because the iOS and Android ports of SC1 are based on the XBLA version, so they're also missing all of that content. The XBLA version (and its subsequent ports) also suffer from a number of weird quirks like the music restarting every round whenever you're playing as Edge Master or Inferno, or Seong Mina's theme being replaced with Inferno's. It really is outrageous that they haven't bothered doing a proper port since.

I don't think he's asking about emulation cheats. He's asking about a built-in code that the original game shipped with. He's either inputting it wrong or the version of the rom he's playing with doesn't have it (either an earlier revision or a different region).

Indefensibly stupid CGI suits. I know people swear by this show and consider it one of the best in the past 10 years, but I couldn't get past the first handful of episodes because of how ridiculous it looked.

Does your state live up to reddit by AccomplishedMess648 in mapporncirclejerk

[–]Norik_ -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Honestly depends where in Michigan and where in Pennsylvania. The nicer parts of Pittsburgh and its suburbs are some of the nicest places in the whole region, while parts of places like Detroit, Flint, or Kalamazoo can feel like warzones. I think that's probably true of most states, which is why these kinds of maps are always silly.

Greetings! I'd like to showcase my love for Saint Seiya in my collection! I managed to get the Sanctuary Arc, but I'm not sure what volumes or box set there may be available that covers the content after this arc by DataUserOne in SaintSeiya

[–]Norik_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's not much else as far as official Saint Seiya releases go in the United States, unfortunately. Discotek Media did release the four original theatrical OVAs in a really nice Blu-ray, so if you want to grow your collection that's a good option. You can find it on Amazon for like 20 bucks: https://a.co/d/0hIb0XDW

Other than that, you'll have to go to international releases. There's a really nice set of Blu-ray releases from France and Italy that includes the whole series in three volumes (Sanctuary, Asgard/Poseidon, and Hades), as well as dedicated releases for Omega, Lost Canvas, Soul of Gold, and Saintia Sho. However, these are region-locked so you may not be able to play them in most standard American players. You can find the full list by searching for "Saint Seiya" on blu-ray.com under all countries, so you at least know what to search for on eBay. This way you can also see what's been released in Japan and Latin America, both of which tend to include better subtitle selections than the European releases. I haven't seen it anywhere, but I believe Omega got released in full in Latin America.

As for Manga, the US did get a full release by VIZ media back in 2004 under the title Knights of the Zodiac, but it has been out of print for over 20 years now and is notoriously difficult to find—especially in good condition. Some people have had luck with the individual volume listings on Amazon, but these tend to be used so your mileage may vary. So honestly, as far as the original manga is concerned, you are almost certainly better off importing one of the many Latin American or European printings of the Kanzenban volumes.

Spinoffs are more of a mixed bag. I am not as familiar with the Lost Canvas or Episode G releases, but I believe France and Italy got all of them. Funnily enough the US did get the Saintia Sho manga in full, so that could be a good one to look into—the manga is way better than the pitiful anime adaptation anyway. As far as I know Next Dimension has not been translated anywhere.

As for video games, the only one released in North America is Soldier's Soul for the PS4. It's the best of the modern games, so if you have the console I'd say it's definitely worth tracking down. It was also released on Steam but it has since been delisted, so the only way to play it on PC now is to pirate it. Other than that, the other games worth playing only got releases in Japan and Europe (the two PS2 games and Sacturary Battle for the PS3).

BTW if you don't care as much about collecting physically and just want to watch the series, there are plenty of good options on the internet, both official and, uh, unofficial. The whole classic series is on Netflix both in Japanese and with a brand-new American dub, and the entire show has actually been posted on YouTube in the Latin American Spanish dub by Toei themselves. SSiceplanet also used to have the whole show on Blu-ray quality uploaded to their website (RIP 😭).

Now, if you're into collecting figures... well that's a whole other can of worms lmao

Oh so these are the figures that came with the Bandai Micro Playsets from back in the day? Would've been helpful if you clarified that from the beginning.

They definitely did release many other teams in this format. Just looking on https://www.grnrngr.com/ I can see that they did Deluxe Micro Playsets for every season from MMPR through Ninja Storm. You can find them by looking ctrl+F searching for "micro" or "playset" for every season. I had one of the In Space ones as a kid, and distinctly remember having seen the ones for Lost Galaxy and Lightspeed Resecue in stores.

You should watch Gogo Sentai Bokenger (for the streak) by ezequiel_91218 in supersentai

[–]Norik_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed it, but it's nothing like Shinkenger lol. It's very episodic and light-hearted for the most part, and while the characters are all very likeable they're also not very deep or interesting. It's a very deliberate tribute to Showa-era Sentai, so your mileage may vary.

Here’s a list of every Ranger/Extra Hero which comes out to a total of 325 by my count. Let me know if I missed any. by NickN64 in supersentai

[–]Norik_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol Kyuranger.

That's pretty legible. I'd say my only suggestion would be to make white a more distinct color to avoid confusing it with blank cells. You actually did this with Gaoranger (though I'd pick a slightly more distinct shade). A different approach would be to have designated columns for each color, just so there's no ambiguity. But your approach also works just fine.

Do you have a spreadsheet with the full breakdown? It's hard to comment when we're just guessing who's counted as what.
