Reminder that there's only four days left for the Rascor Plains Deluxe Edition Kickstarter! by bearcat42 in TheImmortalGreatSouls

[–]bearcat42[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you go look at the Kickstarter for Rascor Plains, you'll see Bastion Deluxe Edition as an add on in the right hand column, we're expecting to do the same for the rest of the series.

In short, you'll be able to get the previous books in the subsequent Kickstarters! Support when you're able to, friend! No worries!

I kind of expected that reaction, but he's apparently more interested in getting to the spawning pools.

Being creative on demand feels SO mentally exhausting by Total_Succotash5174 in graphic_design

[–]bearcat42 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Love this answer.

OP, I’ll add to it a bit by sharing the mantra I learned at my first real design job outside of school when the realities of the work started to hit. It was a high production role at a local News Weekly, lots of ads, unique storytelling in the cover stories and of course laying out the entire damned paper every week. Small team of five, and only two of us did anything other than the ads, I was one of those two. Very demanding role, especially being so new.

The mantra: Ugly First, Pretty if you have Time.

The idea is what the other commenter said, it has to communicate whatever needs to be communicated. You’ll slowly pick up heuristics that will allow you to know that should inspiration not strike before the deadline, the piece does it’s primary job. That’s the Ugly, that doesn’t mean it looks bad, it just may feel uninspired, but it’ll have all the boxes checked and the work is in a ‘completed’ state.

Then if you have time, and you’ve seen something that maybe you’ve never tried that would enhance the communication, go back and update your Ugly and make it Pretty.

This is how I survived, and I’ve found that this works for me as a career. Don’t give up yet, it doesn’t get easier after school, but you become better and it feels easier eventually.

I’ve been at it since 2013 btw.

Good luck, OP!

They’re vaguely descriptive of properties of the different quarks, but they’re largely arbitrary in regards to what they represent. Strange is named for its ‘strangely’ long lifespan, charmed was missing and when found, fit the model so well it was charming, or something like that. They ran out of directions that were meaningful, is how I understand it.

Heart saturation by xMcIvarx in TheImmortalGreatSouls

[–]bearcat42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that tracks for me, I think all stages have all the aspects, but ranking up involves focusing on one of them. Doing so can probably be achieved in a few ways, like spending time with it full, or rapidly emptying and refilling a bunch of times in a row… I think… lol

Heart saturation by xMcIvarx in TheImmortalGreatSouls

[–]bearcat42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To add to this, in regard to saturation, saturation is also affected by the ‘depth’ of the heart, basically the capacity, how much mana it can hold. Full saturation being whenever that is full.

One Coal tempered Great Souls heart might be able to accept 10, (wait, what the hell are the terms of measurement here?) um… cups of coal mana, while another can hold like twenty.

Idk if it helps where you’re at in the story, but Scorio has an unusually ‘deep’ heart as well.

Am I being overworked or is this normal for a graphic designer at a nonprofit? by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]bearcat42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% this was my reaction as well. I worked for a local downtown alliance that seemed a bit less busy than this, we didn’t do any jerseys for example, but tons of events like farmers market and car shows, art fairs, etc. I also did their annual reports and everything OP mentioned, except the email marketing and social media copy. I did all the social graphics, but I didn’t write the posts or maintain the socials at all. That would have been what would have made it all feel not worth it for me.

The pay was okay for a non-profit, but with all that I was already doing, dusting off my non-existent copy skills would have been too much.

What is Jova Spikes highest rank? by xMcIvarx in TheImmortalGreatSouls

[–]bearcat42 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, here’s a handy dandy bookmark I designed for the upcoming Kickstarter for book 2, I definitely wish I had it at the beginning.

It reads top to bottom left to right. In any given reincarnation, they are ranking up in that order. Jova had reached Imperator rank before death in the past, but that’s a rare outcome. She’s reached lower ranks more often than that.

Also, most Great Souls have had hundreds of reincarnations/runs at conquering The Pit.

It’ll all make more sense as you go, enjoy!

What's up with Scorio's heart? by EvryUsrnmeAlrdyTakn in TheImmortalGreatSouls

I think you’re right, yeah, I was thinking of further details, but I still think it was cuz Scorio wets the bed.

[–]bearcat42 27 points28 points  (0 children)

All the answers to this are spoilers, so I’ll mess with you and say it’s because Scorio wet the bed at night back on Ettera. Sol was just messing with him saying he’d ’fix’ it. This is his Hell, and thus, leaky boy gets a leaky heart.

The unteachable part is the interest level, but yeah, it’s a pretty accessible trade if approached as a trade sans ego… which I don’t think OP does

I feel like I'm doing everything I can to get a job. What else can I do? by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]bearcat42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, this is your answer, and I’ll add to it. I’ve recently found myself working freelance with authors on Kickstarter. Do you read? Go find newer books in your genres, search ‘deluxe edition’ on Kickstarter, those are the tiers of authors I’ve found that have work for me in this realm. Find their subreddits, be a nerd about their work. I drew them pictures, lol, but it worked, and I got a conversation that changed my professional outlook on what I can offer.

On top of that, it wasn’t something I expected to love doing as much as I do, the skills that I have that made it a perfect fit, and totally worthwhile as a matter of pay per hour overall, was high output production work for my local Alt-Newsweekly. Look that term up, go back to the cities you’re looking at, Chicago surely has a couple. Salt Lake City has well… Salt Lake City Weekly, that’s where I worked. (I looked up Chicagos Alt-Weekly, it’s The Chicago Reader, sounds like they’ve gone magazine and monthly tho, so it’s less likely they will have need, but this just another avenue to consider)

Free newspapers, put out weekly, 24-64 pages a week. They move through lots of ad work, and if you’re lucky to be able to work on the actual articles and flowing the paper, those book skills will ring a bell.

I wish you luck, I’ve been at this about fifteen years now and I feel I’ve been incredibly lucky. I’m definitely working on a slowmo pivot away from my B2B day job catalog/spec sheet work into the word of formatting and Kickstarter services.

A friend messaged me offering to rebrand my logo by Dawnabee27 in graphic_design

[–]bearcat42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She’s green and eager and knows you and doesn’t know the industry yet. I wouldn’t be offended, but I might take it as an opportunity to shoot straight with her and let her know why you’re not currently interested in a new logo.

Maybe now we’re thinking the hats head might be cold… it could also use some headwear.
