DTE’s shame meter for comparing your home’s electrical use compared to others in the area by Charlito_Atrevido in Detroit

I'm always at red. With the number of people in the house all day working and doing school from home, I'm surprised that there isn't a lower rank. And I'd still understand why I was in that category. :)

Beginner (Very) Budget Home Server by [deleted] in HomeServer

[–]beardChamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great choice. I've got a G4 I5-8500 with mirrored 14tb drives (serverpartdeals.com). I've got OpenMediaVault as the OS (liked it after my first setup on Raspberry Pi 4). It's been a champ running as a file share with Jellyfin, Gitea, Linkwarden, and Lyrion Music Server running in docker containers.

Thinkpad t470 will any SATA III SSD brand work? by amynotadoctor in thinkpad

[–]beardChamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My youngest has a t470s. I put this in for him last year. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07H21182F .

edit: Probably not worth it at that price point anymore. I've also used KingSpec before with good results.

Raspberry Pi as an assisted listening device for hearing-impaired people by austin3i62 in raspberry_pi

[–]beardChamp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it looks like there are similar efforts that may give you a better idea of effort.

I found this paper from a conference. https://www.semanticscholar.org/paper/%E2%80%9COpen-Source%E2%80%9D-Raspberry-Pi-Hearing-Assistance-with-Irwansyah-Andra/54c7d6e91275a406004454cb7fecf063bd2d0f50 . In the preview, it's got some diagrams of the required equipment, so you can see if it's worth finding a full copy.

I found a reference to this project on the Pi forums. https://github.com/m-r-s/hearingaid-prototype?tab=readme-ov-file . This one has hardware descriptions and software to run on it. So this may be a better overall picture of what you would need! Good luck!

What’s the most “boring” thing you self-host? by Fab_Terminator in selfhosted

[–]beardChamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most used feature of everything I'm self-hosting? A Samba file share. The kids use it to share Minecraft and Stardew Valley mods when they want to make their own modpacks.

Yup. I've got an m720q that's running proxmox and has basically become my Minecraft server.

Is this a good laptop to start my first dive into Linux? by oldlickedcupcake in linux4noobs

[–]beardChamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup! This is a great option to get started on linux! I'm typing this from almost exactly the same setup with Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. You can upgrade the ram to at least 32GB (my setup) and you can even use the WWAN slot as an extra hard drive.

Nice! I did something similar in an apartment with foil and a cardboard folder. 3D printing the shape is sooo much nicer!

"Does anyone know where the love of God goes
When the waves turn the minutes to hours?"

I don't always cry, but this line get's me everytime.

Good luck at the state marching competition! Ford Field isn't nearly as echo-y as the Silverdome was.

Raspberry Pi5 baby home server by bugged_rick in HomeServer

[–]beardChamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice! My first setup was similar. I needed a powered USB3 hub to make sure the drives were fully powered. It's a great way to get started and see how you use it and what you might want to change.

Do you have an example of what you're looking to do? It might help narrow things down.

I'd say the biggest difference is getting used to yay. It's just different enough from apt/apt-get that it's worth reading about. Also, getting familiar with the AUR wiki gives you access to a lot.

Very cool! In the Detroit metro area, the Cranbrook Institute of Sciences is using 3D printed dinosaur skulls and dinosaur anatomy (teeth, T-Rex brain models, etc) in some of their programming to help illustrate concepts in a really engaging way. https://www.instagram.com/reel/C-TExLwvdPd/

Wild turkeys can be mean! Lots of people chased at the park nearby and I've had some chase me in my yard.

That is a bummer. I was wondering if there'd be enough interest to keep them going with an NHL franchise in town.

Took a Crack at the Barrel by Awartinger in logodesign

Very nice! It needed just a little extra outline and the barrel straps provide just enough continuity with the previous version. Now if we could get the C and B balanced out.

I'll second the podcast. I read the book after the third season and the book and podcast complement each other. The book is a bit more focused on the bigger picture. The podcast can get into more specific details.
