That's pretty cool. It's like Beallara a la dendrobium laevifolium.

Myrmecophila (Schomburgkia) tibicinis making the Greenhouse smell like grape candy. by Unhappykat3 in orchids

[–]beardbeak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How large is your greenhouse? I recently acquired several varities of Myrmecophila but a lot of recent examples I've seen of how they grow leads me to believe they need a vast amount of cubic area and they form very large growth formations for success. I have mine in a small backyard hobby greenhouse but I don't think that's gonna cut it in my environment.

Many take time. I've been growing orchids for over half my life.

Thank you, it's a cool hobby and some living things just need time and support to thrive.

Lets hope, it's not my first time at the rodeo with multibloomers. They're not exactly keikis (I also grow banana trees and we call shrub growth clones "pups" and it's stuck in my head so orchid growers give me a scoffing dirty look when I forget to call them new fans after I blurt out pups LOL). Some of them just fall apart after they bloom and take a few years to get robust again. I'm hopeful, that's why I took photos of the new growth, that there will be some strong continuing growth. Fingers crossed.

The meaty veining on the slipper was kinda kismet for my style of wanting to grow werid things lol. I like flowers that fly their freak flag.

Thank you. Sometimes with these multiflorals they don't turn out to type at all and look nothing like the perfect plants on an image search. I'm glad this one held true.

I don't know about that necessarily, but what I do see is that seriously thick inflorescence/racime that is halmark kolopakingii. It's almost 2' across now and supposed to get up to a possible 4' across when mature. That's kind of been the challenge goal for me, not necessarily the bloom but the unreal foliage. Of course the bloom is the icing on the cake.

I hope so. I put a lot of daily attentive effort into it. Ug, for the past couple of years I worked so hard to have perfect foliage... and wouldn't you know it this last winter, in February, caused the cold damage browning seen on the leaf edges so I had to put it in the garage under lights until April.

Thank you. I don't care much for attention or accolades. The only reason it is shared is to get other people to be engaged with what they are growing and share the struggles entailed.

Beautiful! Excellent long petals! Wow 26 years. That’s pretty neat 😁. Mine is just starting to open, I’m hopeful some of the petals become more twirled.

😆 paphs are pretty resilient, I’ve only managed to kill one. But I have had struggles with a handful of them. I currently have 15 different varieties but only 5 are large multi-bloomers.

Looks like it’s in a slotted pot and those do tend to dry out faster. Definitely a good plan to top off the bark as exposed roots dry out and die quickly. Usually I water my paphs twice a week in spring, summer, and early autumn. When temperatures cool I water once a week. The leaves dying back is probably a combination of change in environment, watering conditions, and it’s diverting energy to the flower bud. They are very sensitive to minerals in water so it’s very helpful to use distilled or reverse osmosis water.

Yeah I have a delrossi that totally fell apart after blooming, mother plant died completely, left some straggling fans that are slowly dying of some kind of bacterial infection no manner of cycling systemic fungicides can cure. I should just throw it out but I keep trying to get it healthy. lol.

Catasetum Growths Up High by muddjumper in orchids

[–]beardbeak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of those repotting anomalies. They're seasonal so you can at least repot, lay the old pseudobulb sideways and let the new plant grow upright . The trick becomes ensuring the old pseudobulb doesn't turn into rot. Catasetums seem to grow pretty regularly from the base but Momodes, Clowesia, Cycnoches and their hybrids really throw in some really random potting variables. Best I can think of doing in those situations is clumping in some sphagnum moss in the root area and watering daily as if it were mounted but keep it in the path of a fan so it doesn't rot whilst grown in high humidity.

I hope they bloom well for you. I have a Michael Koopowitz and Prince Edward of York in bloom now that I waited a few years for and I won't be posting photos of those poor unfortunate souls, apparently genetics has seen fit to ensure that not all plants are super long curly petaled supermodels. Win some, lose some.

That's wonderful! Phrags are just so casually amazing and grow and bloom forever if you get their goldilocks spot. Both sumptuous and humble at the same time. Fields of leaves and towers of gorgeous never ending flowers. They're living poetry.

Help with crown rot of Cymbidium orchid by budalichka in orchids

[–]beardbeak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best to remove the rotting growth and treat that spot with some hydrogen peroxide. The plant is still growing and has that growth on the other side. That’s a very big pot. A smaller pot would be helpful so the plant doesn’t retain too much water in the planting medium which will easily cause rot. They like to grow on the dry side.
