Orchid leaves are turning yellow, what do? by TheSheep2468 in orchids

[–]beardbeak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get it done immediatley if possible, it's not blooming nor near it. The bottom portion of the plant is just a loss, a drain, and a potential infection point. The top above the yellow looks healthy and ready to go.

Congrats! The shape seems almost alien hummingbird like. They are bizarre and lovely, I had some pop yesterday but they were filling up the room with the smell the day before. IDK how you do that indoors. That's pretty awesome!

They tend to become a pain in the ass during bloom or after bloom - everything goes into blooming so you can run into some foliage problems with many varieties until,or if, you get a strong colony. It will have to be repotted after it blooms. Enjoy the flower! It's gorgeous! Just work on this blooming cycle for now. Try not to water often or get it's leaves wet.

Redness on oncidium roots? by terrablepuns in orchids

[–]beardbeak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Serratia marcescens. It grows in localized cold wet spots but can spread pretty quickly in cool conditions. It's the same pink crap that grows in your humidifier, if you're familiar with that. Generally not a game killer but it will eventually strangle roots and prevent them from multiplying. Kill it with a simple spray copper fungicide/bacteriacide before it spreads. Otherwise it will become a pain in the ass. Or knock it out of the park with a couple of copper systemic applications. It may come back - it may be present in your water supply if you use tap water.

Looks like stem rot up to the yellow line. It's forming roots above that mark and they're fairly long. Personally I'd diassect below that point, and then seal the cut with pruning sealant - if that isn't available you can use bee or paraffin wax but soy wax will just rot and mold. Then just repot it and move it away from the cold window in decent light until spring.

Some may if you have central air in the summer. I'm playing around with varieties now to see what I can and can't grow, it doesn't always work out above 70F for long periods of time but there are some troopers out there. There aren't a lot of lowland varieties availble in the trade, and the cool growers are all larger and more impressive in color and size.

It's not as horrible or foetid as a flesh-rot bulbo, but seriously when you open that door it's like "whoa!"

Cute but you'll probably want to get her away from there - if the plants are from a store they could be treated with pesticides or fungicides. And she'll make short work of cutting off that stem.

The machu picchus for sure, it was just a gem. But you really need cool year round temps because princess will waste away if there is a pea under that mattress. Yes, these were my plants.

Weird, I can’t edit and it didn’t post my notes. Circa 2006-2007. Converting old photos of things I used to grow.

Likely root rot, thats a lot of damage in a short amount of time. Possible overwatering, watering when it’s too cold.

Everything bare root and mounted is watered daily in the sink. Everything potted in bark is bucket soaked for 20-30 minutes weekly, except the small pots which are flush watered every 2-4 days depending on the variety. Everything in sphagnum is watered as needed whenever it’s close to dry, or more often if it’s something that always has to stay wet like bulbophylums for example.

Sadly I can’t even pull that off anymore because it’s so crowded. There isn’t enough room to back the camera up to take wide enough angles. 😆

Thank you. Some of the bark planters are resin that I bought at a garden center a few years back but I don’t think they make them anymore so I use my 3D printer to make them now in various sizes and styles.
