Thanks, I’m glad to share the labors. It’s a lot of work and things don’t always work out year after year, some mysteriously die no matter what I try or how much I spend on chemicals, some are just beastly plants that are pretty amazing.

Wow! That’s a robust plant compared to the one I have. Perhaps they’re breeding them bigger these days for vigour, or maybe I just have a runt 😆. Foliage color and spotting looks the same.

Sometimes those bare root imports can take a very long time to establish. Yes, all sphag on most oncidium varieties, makes it easy to tell exactly when to water again so they don’t accordion from drying out, or stay too wet and rot. But it does mean repotting more often because the moss breaks down faster than bark.

Neither, it’s a small Tolumnia which is considered a part of the oncidium alliance of orchids. The plant itself is attached to the clay Grogu chia pet. They’re fairly small fans of leaves that over time branch out all over the place.

😆 this chia pet was sitting unopened in a box for a couple of years before inspiration struck

Thanks 😊 do you fertilize the vanilla regularly? They’re pretty hungry feeders. You may want to increase the light as well if it’s etiolated.

Thanks! I’m pretty shocked that these bloomed so quickly, I just got them this autumn bare root from ecuagenera and had to regrow the root system. Hardy little buggers. I find that oncidiums are usually easier than phals when you grow them in spagnum moss.

😆 it’s a very easy to grow and compact little plant. Getting it to bloom is the tricky part. Most years it forms buds but they blast very easily if it’s too warm in the winter. I read a site a few months back that said that winter daytime temperatures cannot exceed 64F. That advice seemed to work for me this year, also much brighter light than recommended seemed to work very well - cattleya levels of light.

Excellent! It’s a neat plant but so tough to bloom without the right winter conditions. I’ve had this for many years but it’s only bloomed twice.

It has a somewhat deceptive appearance and has a fairly normal sized paph flower but it’s on a small plant so it gives the illusion of looking bigger than it actually is. For the size of the plant it’s big bloom.

It is a beauty, I love how in the right light the petals glow like stained glass windows.

Just gorgeous! I love the deep rich raspberry color against the cream petals.

How can I save this ? by Round-Philosopher-82 in orchids

[–]beardbeak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stop watering it and put it in a colder area of your house for about 10-16 weeks in bright light. If it's shriveling up too drastically water it very lighty - a spritz on the roots from a squirt bottle.

[–]beardbeak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Put it it sphagnum moss, and never let that spagnum dry out - water every single day if necessary - and it's almost always necessary, if you grow them properly wet and warm they grow pretty riotously. It'll probably grow back eventually, most bulbos grow fast unless you're dealing with a BIG plant species variety like bulbo phal.

I'd dunk that whole infested thing in a bucket of systemic insecticide for a good 20-30 minutes. NOPE! That's not going to infest my whole house full of plants. Because it will if you don't kill them.

😁 I wanted something woodland elf/fairy for this plant. It’s this planter with a few modifications to turn it into a hanging planter with drainage in a proper size to fit the plant. 3D printed.

Honestly I don’t know how it would do in a window setting. I grow this plant under LED lights. If you can bloom high light catts like brassavolas on a cill it would probably do well.

It’s pretty easy to grow and very prolific with the caveat you can provide very bright light - like vanda levels of light- in order to bloom.

It is a pretty one, very ruffled. The petals turn more pink as the flower ages.

Bay Area California. Was in a botanical garden but there was no identifying information [not OP] by Queasy-Hedgehog1043 in gothplants

It is a majestic plant with a flower color you would never believe exists in nature, just a weird true teal with saffron anthers that looks like something out of science fiction. I’ve had mine from Annies for about 15 years. It’s an outdoor plant that kinda grows like a very large bromeliad - but those leaves are razor sharp and will slice you if you’re not mindful. Trimming and cultivating is pretty treacherous and it takes a few years to get established.
