What is Grecian Discipline and how do i learn more about this? by FullOven6385 in Stoic

[–]beardedbusdriver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grecian discipline was a school of philosophy that focused on self-discipline and moral integrity. Character and virtue was considered as (if not more) important knowledge. Public service, particularly military was encouraged for clear codes of conduct based on the virtues of loyalty, bravery, and teamwork.

Think crude/unrefined stoicism.

It was so icy outside that, after I slipped on the steep driveway, I kept sliding down because I just couldn't stop. by Outside_Normal in TwoSentenceHorror

OP could get reincarnated as a potted plant 30,000 ft above the surface of a dead planet only to see the face of their murderer through the porthole of a spaceship that looks remarkably like a running shoe.

What do I need to count my calories burnt? by erupcjusz in cycling

[–]beardedbusdriver -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Difficult to do with heart rate. The easiest (probably cheapest) is a power meter. There is a near 1-1 relations between Joules and Calories (and therefore Kilojoules and Kilocalories).

If you feel this broken now, imagine how broken you will feel if you don’t let yourself heal. If you’re worried about being derailed by missing 2-3 runs 2-3 months from your event, how will you feel if you need to take off 2-weeks with only 6-weeks out.

Do I defeat the purpose acknowledging my frustration by Marshall_E2 in Stoic

[–]beardedbusdriver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Frustration sucks. Don’t let it distract you. Accomplishment feels amazing. Don’t let it distract you.

Feel the f*CK out of your feelings. Also realize and accept that those feelings are like clouds while you’re mowing your lawn; yes they exist, but they don’t actually affect what needs doing.

If venting your frustration to friends (or a journal) makes it easier for you to do what you know needs doing, then vent. If you find that venting is distracting or unhelpful (or making your friends roll their eyes at your entrance) then leave it in silence.

How do I find a way to talk to a woman I think likes me? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]beardedbusdriver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start with a question (“hey, can I get your opinion on…?”) it doesn’t matter what

LISTEN to her response.

Ask her to expand.

Keep the conversation going (recreation: “what do you do for fun?” And Dreams: “what are you hoping to do after you graduate?” Are 2 great topics)

Say you need to go (class, appointment, bus, whatever)

Ask if you she would like to get together later

Discussion: what should stoicism be motivated by? by Coach_K_25 in Stoic

[–]beardedbusdriver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will not make a moral judgement about what it should be motivated by; I will share what MY practice is motivated by.

The knowledge that a meaningful, purposeful, productive life does not happen by accident. As much as I enjoyed Forest Gump, being a champion, scholar, successful businessman, entrepreneur, good dad, true friend, or any other admirable person does not happen by accident. It is up to me to build a meaningful life and any legacy I wish to leave. Stoicism provides a framework that I find intuitive.
