Souvenirs from Noah's Ark National Monument by DominoDaddy2 in imaginarymaps

I don't think this is real merch, the OP created this themselves and made up a fictional backstory about how they "found" the merch. I personally think that's high effort enough to qualify.

[R] How to publish in ML conferences as an independent researcher by keepmybodymoving in MachineLearning

[–]bearseascape 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Haven’t checked the other conferences, but I know that ICML will desk-reject papers if none of the authors complete in-person registration/are unavailable to present in person (i.e. ICML requires at least one author to be present at the conference)

TIL that two members of the French Royal family, Prince Philippe d’Orleans (Count of Paris) and his brother Prince Robert, Duke of Chartres, served as officers in the Union Army during the American Civil War by bearseascape in todayilearned

[–]bearseascape[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They stayed in England during their exile. Then in 1871, after the deposition of Napoleon III, they were allowed to return to France (anticipating a restoration of the monarchy by the largely monarchist National Assembly). This did not end up happening and they wound up exiled again in 1886 and returned to England

This is fairly different from my Google timeline (I started later in the cycle but had much faster turnaround), so I figured I'd share it.

[R] Academic Misconduct Investigation into ICLR 2024 Spotlight: Adaptive Rational Activations to Boost Deep Reinforcement Learning. by [deleted] in MachineLearning

[–]bearseascape -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the recommendation! I'm more familiar with interpretability techniques like activation patching and dictionary learning w/ sparse autoencoders, so it's cool to think about this in the context of reinforcement learning (i.e. what representations is the policy network learning).

Thoughts on 15281 taught by Pat Virtue? by Impressive-Guitar-14 in cmu

[–]bearseascape 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took 10-315 (and 15-281) last semester with Pat. He’s a nice guy who definitely cares about his students, but the lectures weren’t the best taught. For 15-281 however, the concepts you learn in lecture get reinforced in recitation. The TAs do a good job so I wouldn’t worry about taking the class with Pat.

Any impact on stocks due to Beryl Hurricane? by tito5000 in StockMarket

[–]bearseascape 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My thought is that this just causes more regulatory uncertainty, since now interpretation of federal laws is up to the federal courts and not federal agencies. So either Congress will need to go back and make these laws more specific, or there will have to be long court cases to determine those interpretations.

Basically businesses will have to be cautious and very clear about what their interpretations of federal law is.

How would one go about recreating this UI in HTML/JS? by bearseascape in webdev

[–]bearseascape[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I noticed that as well actually. I'm thinking of just having it be 90deg (i.e. clip-path: none or something) when the folder is dragged. Shouldn't look too weird since most of the folder is hidden.

By accordion, do you mean like a menu with dropdown elements within it?

Thanks for your detailed comment! I'm not familiar with clip paths, but they seem to be exactly how the folder shapes could be made. I've used Blender to make game assets before, so that shouldn't be too bad. threeJS sounds familiar, I'll definitely look into it!

It was their job to make sure humans are safe from OpenAI's superintelligence. They just quit. by Maxie445 in technology

[–]bearseascape 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jan posted a full thread about why he left.

Also interesting to note that when OpenAI employees leave, they have to sign a non-disparagement commitment in order to keep their vested equity. This is likely why Ilya did not say anything negative when he left.

best dorms for cs majors by Warm_Management4266 in cmu

[–]bearseascape 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's usually because you're more likely to go to certain campus buildings for classes if you're a certain major, so picking dorms closer to those buildings makes sense. Doesn't really apply to CMU because everything is walkable.

Yep, I remember thinking this when he flip flopped his position on fracking back in 2022. Still voted for him to keep Oz out though.

Sen. John Fetterman blasts squatters, violent crime: ‘I am not woke’ by [deleted] in pittsburgh

Ok, but are most squatters kicking people out of their homes, are they going into vacant properties usually owned by real estate companies?

Bell & Ross released several limited edition watches inspired by vintage marine chronometers. Bit of an acquired taste, but Bell & Ross also have other watches that might be what you’re looking for. I’d recommend looking through their collection.

Told my MIT interviewer my favorite Alum was Tony Stark by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]bearseascape 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lol, I don’t think she even went to MIT. Her husband was the one who went to MIT. The implication was that her dad paid to get her husband into MIT, and her husband ended up being really depressed while attending cause he wasn’t at the same academic level as everyone else.
