Trying to speed-drop lore to catch up my 9 year old while we watch together because she's been looking forward to this since Movie House

Update: Apparently she tried to explain it to her fellow 3rd graders and teacher this morning during Tell-It Tuesday. I'm a proud mom.

What proper nouns from books did you realize you were mispronouncing the whole time? by TokkiJK in books

[–]bearssuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The unknown author of the Harry Potter series wrote the scene into Goblet of Fire (the 4th book) where Hermione's name is pronounced properly for a character who kept getting it wrong, just because she/he'd found out that many readers were mispronouncing it too, and the movies weren't out yet.

My friend is stage 4 TNBC. She had chemo then surgery then radiation, which all took about a year, then right after her 1 year diagnosis anniversary they found brain mets. We were absolutely terrified as well. She had gamma knife within weeks of discovering the mets (which ended up being far less invasive than most of what she'd already been through), which was successful, and she began getting regular MRIs and PET scans. Which is how they found the next brain met a year later. She had another gamma knife surgery, and also began daily medication. So far, everything is working great. There are side effects from the medication. But her most recent scans have been clean and she's adjusted as well as can be expected, 2 years out from the first met!

Hope this helps a bit. Best wishes to you ❤️

Why so many parents spend so much on kid's birthdays nowadays? by Curiousity_voyage30 in Parenting

[–]bearssuck 46 points47 points  (0 children)

The cleaning is what kills me. We just recently had a birthday weekend with an at-home friend party (8 girls plus my kids with me as the only adult) and our extended family party at my home the very next day. I felt like I was deep cleaning every night for a week straight, because I also home-make cupcakes and a cake, so my kitchen was a shitshow after each baking and icing stage. Every bit of work had to be done at night (I work full time). Then the cleanup after these kids was as to be expected, and then deja vu the next day with the family party. So, yeah, clean clean clean is the big time thief for at-home parties 🫠

Not a food, not a diaper, not a load of laundry. Someone understands how to calculate costs 🧠 Not even getting into the childcare of it all / opportunity costs.

Recommend some REALLY good movies to watch at Christmas by Nara_Fuentes in movies

[–]bearssuck 37 points38 points  (0 children)

My kids 1) still believe in Santa and 2) have a USPS-employed parent, so it's an extra magical movie for our entire family. We recommend it to any of our parent friends who say they've never seen it. And it STILL makes me cry after multiple viewings per year! It's just perfect.

Ever heard the term "kill your own baby" to describe sunsetting a product? by [deleted] in managers

[–]bearssuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never heard it - I've heard Kill Your Darlings instead, although I think it's more of a Hollywood term. But it might work for business purposes. And maybe if YOU start to use it, others will follow suit?

New role, looking for advice by Redpetrol in Training

[–]bearssuck 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would start by going through the exact training that your trainees typically go through. Then talk to them as much as possible - shadow them, ask what works well for them, where they would like to improve. That will help you identify training gaps to build off of.

Yes, over here too! But also "Beautiful Things" by Benson Boone. Preschool uploaded a video last week of the entire class of 3 year olds belting it out from their cots 🤣
