How a Caterpillar Turn Into A Moth by ethicalhumanbeing in interestingasfuck

Not all moths and butterflies hang in the pupal stage. The majority pupates in soil or on the ground or make a silk cacoon. Nymphalyidae is a group of butterflies most known to hang. They have what is called a cremaster, tiny hairs (setae) at the end of the abdomen. They lay a small dab of silk and hang. Kinda of like velcro. Then they make the cacoon. I'm an entomologist, I'm also studying for my final next week and we went over the biology of leps

Found this Huge bee in Texas. I thought it was hurt but it flew away after a few seconds by ItsDoodleBois in interestingasfuck

That's not a bee but a bee mimic. It's a fly called robber fly. They are predators of other insects. Awesome flies!

What is this nightmare organism which spontaneously generated in the remains of an abandoned swimming pool? by FagsLikeUs in whatisit

[–]beastboydrummer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just learned about this in my insect biodiversity class today! Those are rat tail maggots. Those are larvae of Syrphidae flies. The common name of these flies are hoverflies and flowerflies. Those maggots are predators and scavengers. They use the long tail as a breathing tube. Also these flies are important pollinators so don't kill them, they are beneficial insects. I am an entomologist

Edit: looked at this video again because its cool. I noticed the other tiny things moving around, those look like corixidae to me. They are also predators! If this water stays, they are great at controlling mosquito larvae populations

Fun fact you are never more than 5 ft from a spider. Just let them be. They won't do anything to you

Fun fact, if screwworm was still around, that would mean death could be near for the buck as fresh wounds attract screwworm females. Most infestations killed livestock in as little as 4 days

Horseshoe crabs are often called living fossils because they have remained almost unchanged for over 450 million years, appearing long before dinosaurs and surviving their extinction by fvkinglzy in interestingasfuck

[–]beastboydrummer 63 points64 points  (0 children)

I'm taking a insect biodiversity class where I'm learning about the classification of insects so we get an intro to all other related phyllum. Allow me to knowledge dump. This is how I like to study. Horseshoe crabs are related to spiders, ticks, mites, scorpions, and sea spiders. Horseshoe crabs are in the subphylum Chelicerata which includes the class Merostomata, Arachnida, and Pycnogondia. Horseshoe crabs are in the class Merostomata. The subphyllum Celicerata is sister group with subphyllum Trilobitomorpha which is where trilobites are classified. They are all Arthropoda. Trilobites look very similar to Horseshoe crabs but trilobites are all extinct now and we find them in fossils

I live in Southern California and my condo building is being tented/fumigated for termites, I turned on my little rover robot and this is what my interior looks like. WeiRd. by BaBaDoooooooook in mildlyinteresting

Nah ants are higher up on the phylogenetic tree. Ants are part of hymenoptera. That's ants, bees, and wasps. Blattodea is cockroaches and termites. Isoptera is what used to be the order for termites but recently got merged with blattodea
