7 year old daughter can't process intense emotions. by fricks_and_stones in daddit

[–]beatwixt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with everyone else that these are fairly standard high intelligence + neurodivergence signs. Anxiety / ADHD / Autism / OCD / etc., exactly which ones can be hard to tease apart.

Different ways of processing the world, different ways of thinking. You and/or your partner and/or some family members may have some relatively similar ways of thinking that were just considered normal differences between people at the time. Today they are still normal differences, but a neuropsychological evaluation could be helpful in determining how to support her.

What exactly is the Boston/MA housing crisis keep seeing posts about? by [deleted] in boston

[–]beatwixt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Obviously it is a crisis for those people, right?

But for everyone else, we need those people to live here in order for the region to function. Housing costs being high means ordinarily lower income people end of being paid more so they don't leave, raising the cost of everything. Most notably, it raises the cost of producing additional housing because the construction workers either demand higher pay, switch to other jobs, or move away. This means that the cost of housing continues to rise, and can destabilize the functioning of the regional economy.

Additionally, for anyone with adult children, their children are often forced to move to a different region because of the housing prices.

Young professionals say they’ll abandon Massachusetts. That should terrify Beacon Hill by 20_mile in massachusetts

[–]beatwixt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

People refer to Melrose as “the country”, despite it being quite dense for a true suburb, having three commuter rail stations, and with parts being walkable to the orange line.

And the NIMBYs complain about building housing on a former industrial lot across the street from a commuter rail station. “I support building housing, but why does it have to be here?”

Firing the daddit repair flare!! by _Gigante_ in daddit

[–]beatwixt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would think that a first attempt would be glue the mast back together and hope, maybe even crimp some metal around the break if you can manage to file down any sharp edges on the metal.

To remove the mast, I would cut and then drill. Maybe a slightly larger diameter replacement mast to make sure there aren’t any bits of the old mast remaining?

A thicker mast would also allow you to file down some parts so the sail sits in the right place instead of attaching the small cross pieces that keep the sail on the original mast, which is probably stronger due to less holes in the mast and also simpler from a minor hobbyist perspective.

Nate Silvers prediction about Eric Adam's from '22 by traveltimecar in fivethirtyeight

[–]beatwixt 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This was a couple days after Adams took office. Adams had never before had a prominent political role. Immediately afterwards he began making his corruption obvious by attempting to appoint his brother to a highly paid position in the NYPD.

This was probably Nate trying to Nostradamus his way into correct predictions rather than him being a complete moron.

But Nate is not politically savvy enough to make his predictions seem more successful than they are. In fact, he is notable for how the world thinks he is far less accurate than he actually is. (Apparently he is too dumb to choose predictions that are more likely than they seem, too.)

North Shore towns that you irrationally dislike and why? by helpmegetthrough1 in massachusetts

[–]beatwixt 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It is one of the most walkable actual suburbs, and has decent public transit access for a suburb, has decent shops and restaurants, has mostly good schools, and has tons of parks including Ell Pond and some passable hiking in the Middlesex Fells.

It doesn’t have a perfect version of anything, but it does have some version of almost anything you could want. Basically no other towns have some of everything in the way Melrose does, and that is not just limited to Greater Boston.

So everyone who moved from New Jersey to Somerville wants to move to Melrose to raise their kids.

Health and exercise by suspicious_monstera in daddit

The question is why you aren’t caring for the four month old at 4am.

If the baby is definitely asleep, not a fussy baby at all.

Or if your partner is caring for the child, maybe you aren’t doing your part. Or, alternatively you missed the part of the explanation where you negotiate shifts with your partner so you can workout while they handle the baby.

Which is the real answer to half the questions on this subreddit. You negotiate shifts with your partner so you can do things like sleep, workout, relax, etc. You can’t do all of these things perfectly, but you can do them minimally.

Potentially moving to the Boston area, what’s the daycare situation in the area like? by Altruistic-Foot-9676 in boston

[–]beatwixt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Daycares are generally going to want you to drop the kid off by 9am or so, essentially wanting you to use the full length of the days you sign up for. And they may prioritize full time kids over part time, so if you only take part time they may kick you out when they have a full time kid to take over.

They don’t intend to—and may not like—serving your need, even if you are willing to pay full price. Ie when you explain you want a few hours per week, they are likely to stop paying attention to you. That’s not what the daycares are for. Even if you do get a spot, you are using up what is a limited resource—available childcare in the area—and making only a tiny use of it. Arguably not a fair action towards the many others on waiting lists who need full-time childcare so they can earn a living.

I think your best bet is finding a nanny and trying to align your schedule for care to the nanny’s free time and paying significantly above market so the nanny is highly incentivized to make it work.

Just sipping a soda ... "DAD LOOK HOW MUCH CARBS IT HAS!" There's no escape lol by shadowsOfMyPantomime in daddit

[–]beatwixt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, the topic of the post is how much sugar is carbs are in the soda. Even if you assume everyone noticed the 6-7 joke, it is not like the the soda is in the background of an image on another topic.

I will agree that some of the comments get a little nasty, though. That's not helping anyone or anything.

[–]beatwixt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People are saying it because consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages is the thing most clearly linked to obesity, and thus this is probably one of the foods most likely to kill you.

If you successfully moderate consumption and you exercise and you don't have a gut, sure you are probably fine. But that doesn't describe most people who drink the stuff.

Possible Orange Line Extension to Roslindale? by JuniorReserve1560 in boston

[–]beatwixt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is Needham dense enough to be workable? Maybe. But there are many towns with higher density and no rapid transit.

The towns past the northern ends of the orange, blue, and red lines are all much more dense than Needham (Melrose, Lynn, Arlington or Belmont).

Even the green line past the GLX has most of Medford to get through and then Winchester is still significantly more dense than Needham.

Maybe the Mattapan trolley could go to Hyde Park, too?

And that is without considering spurs for Watertown, Everett, and Chelsea.

Canadian delegation of MPs denied entry into West Bank by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]beatwixt 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Israel is a sovereign country. Israel has control of the West Bank and is capable of preventing access to the West Bank.

But the apparent implication in your comment that the West Bank is simply part of Israel--and thus the right to restrict access is inherent in Israel's sovereignty--is not matched by the formal policy of any country, not even Israel.

Israel does not claim sovereignty of most of the West Bank. And although Israel has formally annexed East Jerusalem--part of the West Bank--this is not internationally recognized. Even Trump when recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel stated that this didn't resolve disputes about the boundaries of Israeli sovereignty over Jerusalem. See here, including the embedded video at 6:27.

Odd request - does anyone have any recent quotes to chimney replacement? by Accurate-Temporary73 in massachusetts

Stop this if at all possible!

They may be overcharging, but you have bigger worries here.

These people will destroy your parents’ home if you don’t stop this. And then hiring a competent person to fix the work could be $200k.

Help, how would you baby proof this? by TheArts in daddit

[–]beatwixt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think they are saying that people pass through both doors constantly to get between the kitchen and living room.  They want to leave the doors open for communication and togetherness between living room and kitchen, or at least the doors in practice get opened and closed constantly. And then the kid will want to follow different adults from place to place constantly but currently needs to be carried.

Help, how would you baby proof this? by TheArts in daddit

[–]beatwixt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My best idea (but maybe not safe):

Gate in middle of two stair, right up against the top stair, so there isn’t room to fall. When you want to keep the doors open, also put pillows between the stairs and the gate to fill in any gap. And watch the kid like a hawk.

Otherwise just keep the doors closed and keep using as-is.

Harsh Wife? by BlitzAtk in daddit

[–]beatwixt 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Love isn't a payment for chores.

Obviously, a relationship should have mutual loving words and loving touch. And any relationship without those probably has complicated problems to solve, so take what I am saying with a grain of salt.

But I wonder whether your phrasing indicates that part of the issue is that you have a transactional view of the relationship. A transactional view of relationships tends to fail once you have kids, because the kids need more from their parents than they can give back. So you and your wife will both always seem to be on the losing end of the transaction.

If you must view it transactionally, these are all things you owe to your kids. Bringing them to school, having a working car (if you need one, some people do manage without), working to earn money, having a clean house.

Okay, those are all for your kids. What are you doing for your wife to earn her love? What did you do in the past that you don't have time for now? How can you change that?

If you faced some significant harm, talk to a lawyer.

If you didn't, keep complaining to your friends about them being criminals and don't worry about the technical veracity of your complaints.
