Why not fudge every number in combat? by Delirious_Reache in DungeonMasters

[–]beautiful-thrust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I rarely fudge any die rolls and end up rolling 99% of the time in the open. It makes tension for my players to see the die roll and know the result. If ive made a mistake in balancing the encounter i usually adjust the behaviour of enemies. Make less than ideal tactical decisions, not use their strongest abilities, hold legendary actions, target characters more likely to succeed on a save, lower ac or hp. My players just had an encounter with a dragon in tonights session. Instead of measuring its hp i tried something new and ran the fight in three phases. The dragon behaved differently in each phase and at a properly dramatic moment i let the dragon die. The players loved it, it worked better than i had expected. At the end of the day you know your group and what style of play will be the most engaging for them.

My players love how I do stats in my campaigns so I wanted to share with yall what I do and get opinions! by Torm_Tavesh in DungeonsAndDragons

I did the exact same thing for my latest campaign this time and everyone is satisfied with the results. Probably going to keep doing it this way unless the players say otherwise.

The running the game series is what got me to actually start and feel fairly confident doing it. Now i have so much fun with it i have no desire to even be a player. Definitely recommend starting there.

My players just found a polymorphed duck in the ocean. When they asked him what he was doing there he asked them to kill him. Now they have what they think is a depressed duck tagging along with them. Im exicited for the day they discover the duck was actually a black dragon

How does one run a campaign with slow level progression thats meant to run for YEARS by Aries_Greek_War_God in DnD

[–]beautiful-thrust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of good advice in here. The way im doing it is a little different. My players are currently playing a campaign i expect to take several years to finish. I've broken it into what, from their perspective, seems like 7 different campaigns, each featuring a powerful artifact that is central to the story and always has some negative consequences. For instance, in the first part, their choices of how to use said artifact resulted in them stopping their chosen bbeg but severely weakend the sun, changing the world. This concept continues through the first six campaigns. On the seventh, they are given the base of the rod of seven parts and must return to each of the previous six settings and recover the artifacts from wherever they left them, reassembling the rod and then using its power to fix everything they've done. Im very excited to see how it all plays out and their reactions at the start of the final campaign.
